Jürgen Renn, Peter Damerow, Simone Rieger, and Michele Camerota Mark Twain tells the story of a white elephant, a present of the king of Siam to Queen Victoria of England, who got somehow lost in New York on its way to England. An impressive army of highly qualified detectives swarmed out over the whole country to search for the lost treasure. And after short time an abundance of optimistic reports with precise observations were returned from the detectives giving evidence that the elephant must have been shortly before at that very place each detective had chosen for his investigations. Although no elephant could ever have been strolling around at the same time at such different places of a vast area and in spite of the fact that the elephant, wounded by a bullet, was lying dead the whole time in the cellar of the police headquarters, the detectives were highly praised by the public for their professional and effective execution of the task. (The Stolen White Elephant, Boston 1882) THE ARGUMENT In spite of having been the subject of more than a century of historical research, the question of when and how Galileo made his major discoveries is still answered insufficiently only. Early Theatre 8.2 Issues in Review Richard Allen Cave Italian Perspectives on Late Tudor and Early Stuart Theatre The general focus of art exhibitions in Italy has changed significantly in recent years; the objective of this essay is to outline how such a change holds considerable value for the historian of early modern theatre and demonstrates innovative potential for the dissemination of theatre scholarship. Nowadays galleries offer fewer blockbuster retrospectives of the collected works of the painters who constitute the canon; such retrospectives were designed to be seen in a calculated isolation so that viewers might contemplate aesthetic issues concerning ‘development’. This style of exhibition now tends to travel to London, Washington, Boston, Tokyo, so that masterpieces now in the collec- tions of major international galleries may be seen in relation to less familiar work from the ‘source’ country (chiefly, one suspects, to have that status of masterpiece substantiated and celebrated). An older style of exhibition in Italy, which centred less on the individual painter and more on genres, has returned but in a markedly new guise. Most art forms in the early modern period were dependent on patronage, initially the Church, subsequently as an expression of princely magnificence. Some Italian artists were associated with a particular dynasty and its palaces; others were sought after, seduced to travel and carry innovation with them into new settings. The new style of exhibition celebrates dynastic heritage: the Gonzaga at Mantua (2002); Lucrezia Borgia’s circle at Ferrara (2002); le delle Rovere at Urbino, Pesaro, Senigallia, Urbania (2004). As is indicated by this last exhibition, the sites have shifted from traditional galleries into the places where each dynasty flourished, often as in the case of the delle Rovere being held in a variety of palatial homes favoured by the family 109 110 Richard Allen Cave as their seats of power and of leisure. -

Galileo, Ignoramus: Mathematics versus Philosophy in the Scientific Revolution Viktor Blåsjö Abstract I offer a revisionist interpretation of Galileo’s role in the history of science. My overarching thesis is that Galileo lacked technical ability in mathematics, and that this can be seen as directly explaining numerous aspects of his life’s work. I suggest that it is precisely because he was bad at mathematics that Galileo was keen on experiment and empiricism, and eagerly adopted the telescope. His reliance on these hands-on modes of research was not a pioneering contribution to scientific method, but a last resort of a mind ill equipped to make a contribution on mathematical grounds. Likewise, it is precisely because he was bad at mathematics that Galileo expounded at length about basic principles of scientific method. “Those who can’t do, teach.” The vision of science articulated by Galileo was less original than is commonly assumed. It had long been taken for granted by mathematicians, who, however, did not stop to pontificate about such things in philosophical prose because they were too busy doing advanced scientific work. e-ISSN 2385-2720 Venezia Arti Nuova serie 2 – Vol. 29 – Dicembre 2020 From Vitruvius to the Science Of Drawing Daniele Barbaro’s Concept of “Scaenographia” Filippo Camerota Museo Galileo, Firenze, Italia Abstract Daniele Barbaro’s treatise on perspective is one of the most authoritative technical-scientific sources of the sixteenth century. Although largely based on the unpublished work of Piero della Francesca, the treatise had the precise and original purpose of filling a gap in the Vitruvian text about the contents of the so-called ‘scaenographia’, a discipline based on optical geometry of which Vitruvius provided only meagre and sibylline words. The subdivision of the treatise, examined here into the individual parts that constitute it, follows a clearly Vitruvian structure, with the first three parts dedicated to ichnographia (perspective drawing of plans), orthographaia (perspective drawing of solid bodies) and scaenographia (perspective drawing of the buildings and their ornaments), and with two other parts specifically dedicated to the measurements of the human body and to the drawing of the planisphere, themes treated by Vitruvius respectively in the third and ninth books of De architectura. In this sense, La pratica della perspettiva, published in 1568, should be considered as an integral text of the most authoritative commentary on Vitruvius’ I Dieci libri dell’architettura, published in 1556 and 1567. Arezzo E Le Fortificazioni Aretine Tra Cinque E Seicento
Resumo O artigo centra-se na história da arquitectura e do urbanismo em Arezzo entre os palavras-chave séculos XVI e XVII. O tema é analisado no contexto das iniciativas promovidas por Florença, no âmbito do programa de construção do estado territorial, tendo em conta cidade o confronto com as estratégias arquitectónicas levadas a cabo pelos pontífices e a corte papal em Roma, capital do Estado Pontíficio. O contributo, desenvolvendo arezzo os estudos sobre a actividade de Giuliano e Antonio da Sangallo nos estaleiros das sangallo fortificações aretinas (em especial na fortaleza de Arezzo), constitui um aprofun- medici damento sobre o impacto de tais intervenções no planeamento urbano das cidades envolvidas e nos seus programas de renovatio urbis, elaborados a nível central em Florença, em estreito diálogo com as estratégias urbanas lançadas em Roma. A exportação dos projectos dos arquitectos inscritos nas fileiras das magistraturas florentinas, tornou-se explícita nas cidades estudadas através de um processo dia- léctico peculiar, no qual a administração central tinha que lidar, por um lado, com os interesses dos magistrados periféricos, atentos às antigas autonomias municipais, e por outro, com os do patriciado local, interessado em autopromover-se por meio da encomenda arquitectónica. • Abstract The article focuses on the architecture of Arezzo in the sixteenth and seventeenth keywords centuries, examined in the context of initiatives promoted by Florence as part of the stato territoriale construction project, and a comparison of the architectural strategies city initiated by the Popes and the Papal Court in Rome, the capital of the Papal States. Fregoso, condottiero militare, era cognato di Chiappino Vitelli, ambasciatore in Spagna nel 1587 e rappresentante di una importante famiglia di architetti militari toscani, collaboratori di Antonio da San- gallo il Giovane, tra cui ricordiamo Alessandro Vitelli che lavorò a Firenze alla fortezza da Basso, e Ferrante Vitelli (Bonardi 2007) impegnato invece nelle for- tificazioni della Serenissima. Fregoso, al fianco dei senesi, prese parte nel 1553 a numerose spedizioni in Valdichiana e alla vittoria di Chiusi del 1554.1 Per Guidobaldo del Monte e suo figlio Orazio lo stato di Toscana diverrà familiare: il primo infatti, in qualità di ingegnere militare, nel 1589 si recò nel Granducato per effettuare la perlustrazione delle fortificazioni, mentre il secondo negli stessi anni divenne provveditore della fortezza di Pisa. -

EMANUELA FERRETTI «IMMINUTUS CREVIT» IL PROBLEMA DELLA REGIMAZIONE IDRAULICA DAI DOCUMENTI DEGLI UFFICIALI DEI FIUMI DI FIRENZE (1549-1574) Nonostante che lavori locali di sistemazione fluviale, attivati sia per obbiettivi di difesa di insediamenti, strade e coltivazioni, sia per allargare le aree agricole e le pratiche idroviarie, venissero effettuate dai governi comunali cittadini e rurali anche nei secoli XIII-XV, spe- cialmente in corrispondenza dei centri abitati, è dalla seconda metà del XVI secolo, con il consolidarsi del governo di Cosimo I de’ Medi- ci (1519-1574) che – prima sotto la guida di capomastri e ingegneri/ architetti anche di valore, e poi di veri e propri matematici, inqua- drati nelle magistrature delle acque – si eseguirono lavori all’Arno e agli altri corsi d’acqua della Toscana in modo sempre più diffuso e frequente, seppure in mancanza di un vero e proprio piano generale, o addirittura con portata rimasta circoscritta ad ambiti locali, per la sistemazione valliva dei medesimi. Come è noto, l’attività che Cosi- mo I svolge in questo settore dei lavori pubblici, al pari delle opere nel campo della difesa, è imponente1 ed ha come presupposto un ap- parato burocratico efficiente e sottomesso, necessario strumento per l’esercizio del potere concentrato nelle mani del principe – le magistrature delle acque appunto – oltre ad una serie di interventi legislativi che generalizzano e precisano le competenze e gli appara- ti della Dominante, fino ad ottenere un corpus di norme territoriali che si sostituisce quasi completamente alle discipline già in vigore nei singoli ordinamenti locali2. 1 Per questi aspetti vedi G.
