I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This dissertation is about influence which is defined as the ability to move ideas forward within, and in some cases across, organizations. More specifically it is about an extraordinary organization called the Club of Rome (COR), who became advocates of the idea of greater use of systems analysis in the development of policy. The systems approach to policy required rational, holistic and long-range thinking. It was an approach that attracted the attention of Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Commonality of interests and concerns united the disparate members of the COR and allowed that organization to develop an influential presence within Canada during Trudeau’s time in office from 1968 to 1984. The story of the COR in Canada is extended beyond the end of the Trudeau era to explain how the key elements that had allowed the organization and its Canadian Association (CACOR) to develop an influential presence quickly dissipated in the post- 1984 era. The key reasons for decline were time and circumstance as the COR/CACOR membership aged, contacts were lost, and there was a political paradigm shift that was antithetical to COR/CACOR ideas. -

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1080/07075332.2018.1472623. https://hdiplo.org/to/AR957 Editor: Diane Labrosse | Commissioning Editor: Cindy Ewing | Production Editor: George Fujii Review by Greg Donaghy, University of Toronto here are very few episodes in Canada’s diplomatic history—and none so unsuccessful—that that have attracted the scholarly ink reserved for Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau’s controversial peace initiative at the height of the second T Cold War in the fall of 1983.1 The latest entry is Luc-André Brunet’s award-winning article, “Unhelpful Fixer? Canada, the Euromissile Crisis, and Pierre Trudeau’s Peace Initiative, 1983-1984.” Superbly researched in seven national archives, carefully argued, and presented with verve and spirit, “Unhelpful Fixer” will quite probably remain the last word on the subject for some time to come. For Brunet, the story starts in the summer of 1983, when Trudeau, already fifteen years in power, cast about for a dramatic foreign policy initiative that would restore his cratering poll numbers. Horrified by Moscow’s decision to shoot-down an errant Korean airliner over Soviet airspace on 1 September 1983, Trudeau leapt into action. Sidelining the foreign and defence policy establishment, he assembled a Task Force of mid-level officials, and asked it to cobble together a series of arms control and disarmament measures to “change the trend line” (1148) in East-West relations and reduce the brittle tensions between the United States and the USSR. -

History of lying in state The concept of lying in state has been known from antiquity. In England in historical times, dead bodies of people of all classes “lay” – that is, were prepared and dressed (or “laid out”) and, placed in the open coffin, would lie in a downstairs room of the family house for two or three days whilst the burial was arranged.1 Friends and relations of the deceased could then visit to pay their respects. -

Janine M: Hello, my name is Janine Marchessault. I'm a professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Arts at York University. Today is March 17, 2018. We are at the SCMS Conference in Toronto at the beautiful Sheraton. I have the great honor today of interviewing one of the Founders of Canadian Film studies, Seth Feldman. Seth is my colleague at York University. I have taken courses with Seth Feldman. I am involved in an ongoing research project to excavate the lost films of Expo 67, a project which Seth helped to initiate. Janine M: He is an author, a broadcaster, a film programmer and a professor, as I said, at York University. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in History. Before going on to study at SUNY Buffalo and help to manage the legendary Center for Media Studies, which was founded by the great Jerry O'Grady. He wrote the first, or one of the first, doctoral dissertations in English, on the films of Dziga Vertov. While working at the University of Western Ontario, he co-edited with Joyce Nelson, the first book devoted to Canadian cinema, the Canadian Film Reader. He is a founder and a past president of the Film Studies Association of Canada. He's published widely on Canadian Cinema, including Take Two, a second anthology on Canadian film. He also published Allan King, documentary filmmaker. Janine M: In addition to all of this activity, helping to found Canadian film studies as a field of study, Seth was also an author and broadcaster of 26 radio documentaries for the Canadian broadcasting corporation, and for the program ideas. -

GLOBAL CENTRE FOR PLURALISM | CENTRE MONDIAL DU PLURALISME 2008 Expert Roundtable on Canada’s Experience with Pluralism Canadian Multiculturalism: Historical and Political Contexts Karim H. Karim School of Journalism and Communication, Carleton University Ottawa, Canada Has multiculturalism worked in Canada? The answer to this question would depend on what one thinks are its goals and how one chooses to measure progress towards them. The varying meanings attached to words in the multiculturalism lexicon lead to expectations that are sometimes poles apart. Its terminology includes: pluralism, diversity, mosaic, melting pot, assimilation, integration, citizenship, national identity, core Canadian values, community, mainstream, majority, minority, ethnic, ethnocultural, race, racial, visible minority, immigrant, and diaspora. Those who believe that multiculturalism has succeeded point to the consistently high support for it in national surveys, the success stories of immigrants who ascend social, economic or political ladders, and the growing number of mixed marriages. For those on the other side, the relevant indicators seem to be high crime statistics among particular groups, the failure of some visible-minority groups to replicate the economic success of previous generations of immigrants, the apparent lack of integration into Canadian society, and the emigration of some recent arrivals from Canada. However, this paper takes the view that the scales are tipped in favour of multiculturalism’s success in Canada. The overall evidence for this is the comparatively low level of ethnic, racial or religious strife in this country compared to other western states such as the U.K., France, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and the U.S.A. Large proportions of immigrants to Canada indicate that they are pleased to have come to this country rather than to any other western nation, even as they continue to face certain disadvantages (Adams, 2007). -

Celebrating the True North: Canada Day as part of a political master brand Justin Prno Thesis submitted to the University of Ottawa in partial Fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts Department of Communication Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa © Justin Prno, Ottawa, Canada, 2019 CELEBRATING THE TRUE NORTH ii Abstract In Canada, the rise of political branding coincided with the adoption of the permanent campaign, creating an environment in which politicking is now normalized and politicization is expected. With Canada Day 2017 as a case study, this thesis adopts Marland’s Branding Lens Thesis (2016) as a conceptual framework to analyze if a national holiday became part of the Liberal Party of Canada’s master brand. The key conclusion of this thesis is that the Liberals integrated their ‘master brand’ into Canada Day 2017 by integrating political branding into their government communications. This thesis also shows that Justin Trudeau played a bigger role during Canada Day than expected by a Prime Minister. Significantly, this thesis shows the Liberal government altered the themes and messaging of Canada 150 to parallel that of their master brand, applying a Liberal tint to Canada Day and Canada 150.
