UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Against the Flow: Impassive Modernism in Arabic and Hebrew Literatures A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature by Shir Alon 2017 © Copyright by Shir Alon 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Against the Flow: Impassive Modernism in Arabic and Hebrew Literatures by Shir Alon Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Gil Hochberg, Co-Chair Professor Nouri Gana, Co-Chair Against the Flow: Impassive Modernism in Arabic and Hebrew Literatures elaborates two interventions in contemporary studies of Middle Eastern Literatures, Global Modernisms, and Comparative Literature: First, the dissertation elaborates a comparative framework to read twentieth century Arabic and Hebrew literatures side by side and in conversation, as two literary cultures sharing, beyond a contemporary reality of enmity and separation, a narrative of transition to modernity. The works analyzed in the dissertation, hailing from Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, Egypt, and Tunisia, emerge against the Hebrew and Arabic cultural and national renaissance movements, and the establishment of modern independent states in the Middle East. The dissertation stages encounters between Arabic and Hebrew literary works, exploring the ii parallel literary forms they develop in response to shared temporal narratives of a modernity outlined elsewhere and already, and in negotiation with Orientalist legacies. Secondly, the dissertation develops a generic-formal framework to address the proliferation of static and decadent texts emerging in a cultural landscape of national revival and its aftermaths, which I name impassive modernism. Viewed against modernism’s emphatic features, impassive modernism is characterized by affective and formal investment in stasis, immobility, or immutability: suspension in space or time and a desire for nonproductivity. -

Taking shape in time and space, they all   contribute to make writing the epitome of human existence. The question of writing crossing local borders and reaching for a wider audience worldwide has never been an act of straightforwardly communicating a moment in time as witnessed by the writer; this can be better documented by a historian. Only when the writer's characters become the voice of humanity at large, can they cross social, geographical and historical borders. A literary work is nonetheless a commodity in need of effective marketing strategies/mechanisms to reach beyond borders and convey a message from some part of the world probably known through media stereotypes. Far removed from the human and literary aspects of writing as it may sound, this fact pertains to our part of the world despite the proliferating translations of Arabic literature into world languages. Even worse is the fact that inter- Arab borders may prove difficult for Arab writers to cross partly under some immature political pretext or for feigned ethical sensitivities in the age of internet where borders have been dissolved. Writing is truly an individual talent's conceptualization of human experience but for it to cross borders more issues should be attended to. -

Introduction: Tracks and Traces of Literary Commitment— On Iltizām as an Ongoing Intellectual Project Yvonne Albers, Georges Khalil, Friederike Pannewick If one day the people will to live Then destiny must reply; The darkness must disappear, And bonds must break.1 These are the lines of the poem “The Will to Live” (“Irādat al-ḥayāh”) written in 1933 by the Tunisian poet Abū al-Qāsim al-Shābbī (1909‒1934) to which the rallying chant of the popu- lar uprisings in the Arab world in 2011 responded: “The people want the fall of the re- gime/system” (“Al-shaʿb yurīd isqāṭ al-niẓām”). Regimes indeed fell and history is evolving. The euphoria sparked by the fall of authoritarian rulers in Tunisia and Egypt that year has now evaporated. Current developments in many countries of the region seem to be heading in different directions, towards greater fragmentation, sectarianism, and violence, witnessing a resurgence of the paradigms of the old order, such as the outworn dichotomy of authoritari- anism versus religious extremism. -

Introduction In the first half of the twentieth century, many Arab writers were engaged in a long and difficult task aimed at achieving cultural independence and intellectual decolonization after years of inertia caused, if not imposed on them, by foreign domination. These writers were well aware of the fact that literature, amongst other types of artistic production, was a powerful medium for human expression, especially for those who look for better representation of their cultural identity. They observed, in particular, "the rise in the social power of the novel as an important form for expressing the collective imaginary" (Jacquemond, 2008: 221-2), and realized that we, the Arabs, are among those who have a very strong yearning for this kind of expression. Our cultural identity has for decades been under pressure and threat of fragmentation, ironically, "in an age of identity." (1) We have been worried about our identity and we need to affirm it; we need to show who we are. In Egypt, that task has been carried out by a group of writers, among whom Naguib Mahfouz stands out. This Egyptian Nobel Prize laureate was not merely a novelist, but over and above that, a man of vision committed to reclaiming the rich heritage of Egypt, of every inch of it. This commitment, I have to state, was not a political devotion or a cultural trait absorbed as the writer matured; it developed in him from the time he was seven years old, when he experienced an early meaning of nationalist feeling (Enany, 2007: 3). -

Osim Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy, University of Calabar Calabar Cross River State, Nigeria * [email protected] Abstract Literature is generally defined as anybody of written works. Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary (1995) gives further explanations about literature as "writings having excellence of form or expression and expressing ideas of permanent or universal interest". In this paper, therefore, the writer looks at the Arabic literature which gives one much insight into writings in Islam. The study uses a qualitative method of research where secondary sources from books and the internet were accessed and used in the work. The researcher finds out that the Quran is so influential in shaping literature in Arab nations and beyond. The writer also looks at classical Arabic literature such as: poetry, prose, fiction and non-fiction literature, where imaginary and factual stories about events and people are written. Nevertheless, the paper finds out that there was a decline of Arabic literature as a result of getting into contact with a variety of different people's cultures like Persia, among others who influenced directly or indirectly on Arabic culture. However, in the modem Arabic literature, there was a revival which is referred to in Arabic as “al-Nahda”, which means "the Renaissance". Today, the researcher in the work sees Arabic literature being accepted externally as there is an increase of translations of Arabic books into other languages, and Arabic authors begin to receive the commendation of their writings. -

This article studies Specters as an Egyptian campus novel. Campus novels are set at (provincial) universities; they are written to ridicule both the institution/authority and the naivety/false superiority of some academics. This genre can focus on four groups: students, teaching staff, deans, and faculties. Modern campus novels are also involved in discussing other issues outside the borders of universities. This study not only portrays the pitfalls of some professors, but highlights the social and political problems that modern societies encounter as well. This article concludes that readers are shocked and disillusioned because they have regarded that academic life as an example of chastity, purity and wisdom. -

LATE MODERN ARABIC LITERATURE: GENDER AS CRUCIBLE OF CRISIS A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Khalid Hadeed August 2012 i © 2012 Khalid Hadeed ii Late Modern Arabic Literature: Gender as Crucible of Crisis Khalid Hadeed, Ph.D. Cornell University 2012 This dissertation explores the relation between gender and crisis in the late modern phase of Arabic literature—specifically, from the late 1960s to the present. Working with a regional Arab context, I define crisis as an endemic situation of political paralysis and cultural stagnation, one historically connected to the Arab world’s failure to obtain the political freedom, economic independence, and social reform aspired to in anti-colonial nationalism. This dissertation focuses on literature that has developed out of three of the most salient crises since the late 1960s: the Israeli occupation of Palestine, sectarian strife in Lebanon, and the nexus between comprador capitalism and the police state in Egypt. The texts I read for this purpose are: from Palestine, the poems “Moans at the Permits Window” (1969) and “A Hurtful Wish” (1973) by Fadwa Tuqan, the poetic memoir The Siege (1982) by May al-Sayigh, the experimental novella All That’s Left to You (1966) by Ghassan Kanafani, and the sociological novel The Inheritance (1997) by Sahar Khalifeh; from Lebanon, Rashid al-Daif’s arguably “post-modern” novel Dear Mr Kawabata (1995) and Jabbur al-Duwayhi’s historical novel The Rain of June (2006); and from Egypt, Sonallah Ibrahim’s Kafkaesque novel The Committee (1981). -

Shifting Ground: Spatial Representations in the Literature of the Sixties Generation in Egypt Yasmine Ramadan Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Yasmine Ramadan All rights reserved ABSTRACT Shifting Ground: Spatial Representations in the Literature of the Sixties Generation in Egypt Yasmine Ramadan This dissertation examines the representation of space in the fiction of seven members of the sixties generation in Egypt. Focusing upon the novels of Jamāl al- Ghīṭānī, Muḥammad al-Bisāṭī, ʿAbd al-Ḥakīm Qāsim, Bahāʾ Ṭāhir, Yaḥyā Ṭāhir ʿAbdallah, Ibrāhīm Aṣlān, and Ṣunʿallah Ibrāhīm, I contend that the representation of urban, rural, and exilic space is a means to trace the social, political, and economic changes of the post-colonial period in Egypt. This exploration is framed by the theoretical work of Michel Foucault and Henri Lefebvre and seeks to show that the “spatial shift” that has occurred in the humanities and social sciences can enrich the understanding of the contribution of this literary generation. Emerging at a time of instability and uncertainty, the writers of jīl al-sittīnāt (the sixties generation) moved away from the realist techniques of their predecessors, displaying new innovations in their work, in an ongoing struggle to convey their changing experience of reality. This shift away from realism can be registered in the representation of urban, rural, and exilic space and speaks to the writers’ growing disillusionment with the post-colonial project in Egypt, in the years following the 1952 Revolution. Chapter One traces the emergence of the writers of the sixties generation onto the literary scene in Egypt, presenting both the aesthetic innovations with which they were associated, and the socio-economic and political context of which they were seen to be both a part and an expression.
