CURRICULUM Al-Tanzīl offers a uniquely devised training-course which aims to enhance students - specifically huffath - reciters and all ardent learners or Qurʾān lovers in all aspects of Qurʾānic study. This course provides the student with understanding of the Arabic language, allowing him to grasp this communiqué, al-Qurʾān. It will also offer in-depth discussions on Tajwīd and Qirāʾāt, utilising classical works while comparing it with contemporary studies. Ulum al-Qurʾān is one of the pivotal subjects introduced so that students may understand basic and necessary facts about the Qurʾān: when certain verses were revealed, why they were revealed, how the Qurʾān was revealed, compiled, the history of Qirāʾāt, etc. 12 Al-Tanzīl’s Database of Sanad Holders The program allows students to study various specialised texts in the field of Qirāʾāt and Tajwīd, the likes of the Tuḥfah, the Jazariyyah and ultimately the Shāṭibiyyah as well as the Seven, 10 and 14 Qirāʾāt. Sanads and ijazāt are issued to students who have successfully fulfilled the necessary requirements and achieved satisfactory results.

November, 2019 Granite Journal Issue on Gender issues and how they affect human lives Walayah (Guardianship): The Authority Over A Woman’s Choice in Marriage and How This Reflects A Desire To Control and Kafa’a (Equality): A Barrier To A Woman’s Marriage Choice? Muhammad Farooq Divinity, University of Aberdeen A b s t r a c t This article explores the adult woman's consent as a paramount element in contracting a Muslim marriage. It considers whether permission of the wali (male guardian) is a condition, per se, for a valid marriage in the eyes of the law and of Sharia. In order to address the issue in hand, it provides a brief overview of contemporary writers' opinions, in which the appropriate place of a woman's consent in Muslim marriage is highlighted. Key to the idea of a young Muslim woman's marriage, the doctrine of kafā’a (equality or suitability), the match between the man and woman, and its grounding in patriarchal and social norms is also discussed. The main conclusion of this paper is that both concepts are used in a bid to keep the upper hand in the marriage. Also, on the one hand, the marriage guardianship is a desire of controlling position of the man and on the other, kafā’a limits the woman's choice in choosing a life partner. 1 Ibn ‘Arabi: Spiritual Practice and Other Translations This volume includes a variety of shorter, partial translations of short treatises by Ibn ‘Arabi or selections from his ‘Meccan Illuminations’, most of which should eventually appear in more complete form in two forthcoming volumes now in preparation: Ibn ‘Arabî's Divine Comedy: an Introduction to Islamic Eschatology; and Spiritual Practice and the Spiritual Path: Ibn 'Arabî’s Advice for the Seeker. The first two short excerpts are included because of their special ‘autobiographical’ nature and relevance to Ibn ‘Arabī’s own life. Academic Editor: Enzo Pace Received: 20 September 2016; Accepted: 14 February 2017; Published: 25 February 2017 Abstract: This paper discusses the concept of death, resurrection and shrine visitation from an Islamic point of view. It is divided into two integral parts. In the first part, we examine the Islamic eschatological concepts of death, resurrection, and the Day of Judgment. The second part deals with one of the most disputed topics in Islamic thought, those of graves and shrines and the cult of saints. We will be arguing that in spite of the fact that Muslims are not allowed (from a fundamentalist point of view) to construct ornamented tombs or shrines, the cult of saints is widespread in many parts of the Muslim world. We contend that this phenomenon stems from cultural rather than religious factors. In many cases, Muslims were unable to divest themselves of cultural aspects that interfered or were incompatible with their religious beliefs. We assert that the cult of saints is more common in Shia- than Sunni-dominated countries. In response to the ongoing recent attacks on shrines, the researchers suggest dialogue among Muslim sects. Keywords: awliya’¯ ; graves; Salaf¯ı; Sharia; Shia; Shi’ites; shrines; Sufism; Sunni; Wahhabism¯ 1.

• Al-Iklil Fi Ma'ani Al-Tanzil and Family Planning in Indonesia
Advances in Social Science, Education and Humanities Research (ASSEHR), volume 137 International Conference on Qur'an and Hadith Studies (ICQHS 2017) AL-IKLIL FI MA‘AN I AL-TANZIL AND FAMILY PLANNING IN INDONESIA Islah Gusmian State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Surakarta [email protected] Abstract This article discusses tafsir Al-Iklil Fi Ma’ani Al-Tanzil, written by K.H. Misbah Mustafa with special reference to the social problem about keluarga berencana/KB (Family Planning). Based on the theory of sociology of knowledge Karl Mannheim, the article finds that Kiai Misbah’s interpretation has been influenced by coastal culture and tradition of pesantren where the writer grew. Through tafsir al-Iklil, Kiai Misbah refuses the concept of KB based on political as well as theological arguments. Politically, KB is seen as a method of government in reducing the number of Muslim population in Indonesia. Theologically, he anchors his argument on QS. 6: 151 which prohibits us from killing a child. His tafsir is an example of how the Qur’an was used to provide an alternative view over the issue of family planning in modern Indonesia. Keywords: Al-Qur’an, Tafsir, Pegon, Archipelago, Pesantren Introduction Since 19th Century, Kiais (traditional Islamic religious scholar) in pesantrens had written tafsir Al-Qur’an, for example, K.H. Muhammad Salih bin ‘Umar al- Samarani(1820-1903 AD) wrote Faiḍ al-Raḥmān fī Tarjamah Kalam Mālik al-Dayyān, K.H. Ahmad Sanoesi (1888-1950 AD) wrote Raudhat al-‘Irfān fī ma’rifah al-Qur’ān with Pegon script and Sundanese language, K.H.

WOMEN IN ISLAMIC SOCIETIES: A SELECTED REVIEW OF SOCIAL SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE A Report Prepared by the Federal Research Division, Library of Congress under an Interagency Agreement with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence/National Intelligence Council (ODNI/ADDNIA/NIC) and Central Intelligence Agency/Directorate of Science & Technology November 2005 Author: Priscilla Offenhauer Project Manager: Alice Buchalter Federal Research Division Library of Congress Washington, D.C. 20540−4840 Tel: 202−707−3900 Fax:202 −707 − 3920 E-Mail: [email protected] Homepage: http://www.loc.gov/rr/frd p 57 Years of Service to the Federal Government p 1948 – 2005 Library of Congress – Federal Research Division Women in Islamic Societies PREFACE Half a billion Muslim women inhabit some 45 Muslim-majority countries, and another 30 or more countries have significant Muslim minorities, including, increasingly, countries in the developed West. This study provides a literature review of recent empirical social science scholarship that addresses the actualities of women’s lives in Muslim societies across multiple geographic regions. The study seeks simultaneously to orient the reader in the available social scientific literature on the major dimensions of women’s lives and to present analyses of empirical findings that emerge from these bodies of literature. Because the scholarly literature on Muslim women has grown voluminous in the past two decades, this study is necessarily selective in its coverage. It highlights major works and representative studies in each of several subject areas and alerts the reader to additional significant research in lengthy footnotes. In order to handle a literature that has grown voluminous in the past two decades, the study includes an “Introduction” and a section on “The Scholarship on Women in Islamic Societies” that offer general observations⎯bird’s eye views⎯of the literature as a whole.

The monotheistic religions, notably Chris- tianity and Islam, which place man at the top of earthly cre- ation and allow him to use nature for his own benefits as he sees fit, is often put against religions such as Buddhism and Shintoism which have a very different view of creation and man’s position in nature as a whole. During the last fifty years or so it has become abundantly clear where the idea that man has the unlimited right to use and exhaust the natural world leads to. Natural resources are shamelessly plundered by those who are the best equipped and the most unscrupulous, and who strive for material gain at the cost of all other creatures, including those human beings lacking the means to counter the destruction of their natural environment and resources. Many of the people who seriously worry about these mat- ters are devout Christians and Muslims, and they take the negative views on the role of their religions very hard. So in Christian, and somewhat later also in Muslim circles there has for long been a strong tendency to look for counter argu- ments demonstrating that instead of allowing man free and 995569_Bior_2012_3-4_04_Boekbesp.indd5569_Bior_2012_3-4_04_Boekbesp.indd 343343 117/09/127/09/12 113:563:56 377 BIBLIOTHECA ORIENTALIS LXIX N° 3-4, mei-augustus 2012 378 unlimited use of nature, Islam and Christianity encourage, or is no attempt at a comprehensive treatment of the issue.
