Sufism and Sufi Practices in Pakistan: A Case Study of ‘Notan Wali Sarkar’(1917- 1994) Muhammad Iqbal Chawla University of the Punjab, Lahore. Introduction Literature is agog with stories about the life, thoughts and practices of several Syeds and Qalandars but not many words have been spent on the life of Mian Abdul Rashid Panipati, popularly known as ‘Notan Wali Sarkar’. A man of simple tastes and great spirituality, Mian Abdul Rashid is considered by his followers as one of the greatest Qalandars. This paper delves into the life of the mystic who is known little beyond Sargodha, Pakistan, and has even been cold-shouldered by historians. Call it divine design or sheer coincidence, Mian Abdul Rashid was born in Panipat (India), the land of Qalandars, (Eaton, 2003) and finally settled in the city of Sargodha which is known for its mystics, pirs, Syeds, and most importantly, for the Gaddis of Pir of Sial Sharif and Pir Karam Ali Shah. Even two decades after his death (he was killed by his nephew), Sargodha still resonates with the tales of Mian Sahib who was always dressed in dhoti, kurta; the man who loved the betel leaf, tea and smoke from the hookah (water pipe) after every meal, a routine that he stuck to until the last breath. He had very simple food habits and would often be found meditating by fire or cleaning the enclosure with water. He always advised his visitors to recite the holy Quran, stay clean, and observe fasting. -

(2016-10-01) Abstract The Qur'anic exegesis necessarily involves two very significant issues: the wide diversity of opinion among the commentators and the question whether the ayat related to nature can be justifiably explicated in the light of modern science. In fact, these issues have for long been a subject of great discussion and debate. The first group of Muslim scholars do not subscribe to the opinion that ayat related to nature (in the Qur'an) can be justifiably explained scientifically. On the other hand, the second group subscribes to the opinions that modern science may justifiably be used for the Qur'anic interpretation. Objective of the present article was mainly to discuss the opinions and arguments of the two divergent or contradictory groups at length and also to attempt to find out measures to settle the issues raised by them. Also, the present article provided some examples illustrating that Qur'anic interpretation is not the monopoly of a scholar or of a particular generation. The more the knowledge grows and the culture, skill, and technology develop the more the grandeur of the meaning and the reason behind the miracle latent in the ayah of the Qur'an is revealed. -

Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi İlahiyat Fakültesi Dergisi Yıl:2017/2, Sayı: 39 Review of the Faculty of Divinity, University of Süleyman Demirel Year:2017/2, Number: 39 OUTLOOK ON MIRACLES IN TAFSEER AL-MANAR Celil KİRAZ ABSTRACT In their famous Qur’anic interpretation Tafseer al-Manar, Muhammad Abduh and Rashid Rida stated that miracles exist theoretically within possibility and just like other Islamic scholars, they also accepted some miracles based on some evidences such as some statements in Qur’anic verses. However, they did not refrain from glossing some miracles in various forms that are considered as miracles by most of the other commentators of the Qur’an. Thus, they exhibited an ambivalent approach to miracles. The most important reason underlying this is that they were probably affected by philosophical movements such as Rationalism and Positivism, which have become a dominant thought during the period they lived in. During the Golden Age in the medieval period, Muslim scholars and philosophers had been the world references for science and technology development. They lost this legacy because they embraced orthodoxy rather than rationality. Al-Gazālī had written a book called Tahāfut al-Falāsifah (The Collapse or Inconsistence of the Philosophers) which criticised Islamic philosophers especially Ibn Sīnā and Al-Fārābī. Later after the death of al-Gazālī, Ibn Rushd wrote book tahāfut al-tahāfut which commented on al-Gazālī‘s book Tahāfut al- falāsifah. It was arguing over Muslims should advance in science and technology in this modern era as it was evident during the Golden Age Islamic Era (the 7th up to the 13th centuries) whereby Muslims were the world references in science and technology development. However, after the period Muslims abandoned rationality and have remained so up to the present. This situation caused Islamic thoughts to move from rationality to orthodoxy. Al-Gazālī has been considered as the cause of the decline in Islamic Thought as he critiqued Islamic philosophers especially Ibn Sīnā and al-Fārābī in his book Tahāfut al-Falāsifah. -

KONSEP AL-NAFS DALAM KAJIAN TASAWUF AL-GHAZᾹLĪ Paisol Burlian Fakultas Dakwah dan Komunikasi IAIN Raden Fatah Palembang e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: This article will elaborate on al-nafs (soul) which is an essential part of human nature. The Sufis divide understanding al-nafs in three senses. First, al-nafs is a substance that distinguishes human qualities with other creatures. Second, al- nafs is the cause of man to be creative and dynamic, through the process of inspiration and contemplation. Therefore, the level of quality of the nafs is different. In the literature of Sufism, the nafs can be transformed from a trend that is closest to the bad action to the level of closeness to the divine tenderness. Third, the nafs is the impulse of anger and lust, and urge all reprehensible nature, and immoral in mind. Sufi Sunni, al-Ghazālī calls nafs as the center of the potential upset, and the base of the despicable nature. Therefore, al-nafs need to be purified so that the properties of self perverted man disappeared. Road purification al-nafs is riyāḍah and mujahadah who constantly so al-nafs is ultimately up to the level of the nafs al-muṭmainnah. Abstrak: Artikel ini akan mengelaborasi tentang al-nafs (jiwa) yang merupakan bagian yang penting dari hakikat manusia. Para sufi membagi pengertian al-nafs ini dalam tiga pengertian. Pertama, al-nafs merupakan substansi yang membedakan kualitas manusia dengan makhluk yang lain. Kedua, al-nafs merupakan penyebab manusia menjadi kreatif dan dinamik, melalui proses inspirasi dan tafakur. -

For instance, development of the embryo in the womb of the mother. For centuries man was curious to know about the developmental stages of the embryo right from conception to the birth but all these efforts were futile until the invention of modern scientific tools like microscope, x-rays, and ultrasound machines. No one exactly could conjecture when and how the growing organism was enlivened with spirit. But with the help of these new instruments man was astonished to find how these different stages were exactly described by the Holy Quran when man’s knowledge of these phenomena was in the primary stages. About a millinium and half ago, Quran clearly described the unknown facts about the development of embryo in its initial stage. Even a non, believer will have to admit the facts described by the heavenly book. In the present research paper different stage of embryo in the womb of mother Rave been discussed with special attention to the stage when embryo is enlivened with spirit in the light of Quran, Hadith and modern embryology. -

These dimensions are studied from the perspective of Sunni Islam in revolutionary and post-revolutionary Egypt on the basis of a fieldwork conducted in Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo in 2012-2014, as well as of works by classical and contemporary Islamic scholars. This study of Shari’a is guided by the following questions: What kind of political subjectivity is enabled by Islamic jurisprudence when dealing with revolutionary protests, power, and order?
