As most Islamic scholars deem the Qurʾan inimitable divine speech, the idea of translating the Qurʾan has been surrounded with concern since the first centuries of Islam; printing aroused fears about ritual purity and threatened the traditional trade of the scribes. This study examines how Turkish Muslims challenged these concerns and asserted the necessity to print and translate the Qurʾan in order to make the text more accessible. With the spread of the printing press and literacy in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Qurʾan translations have become increasingly important as means of transmitting the meaning of the text to expanding audiences. I investigate the rise of Qurʾan translation through a historical survey of Ottoman and Turkish language translations and an examination of the debates surrounding them waged in periodicals, government archives, and monographs. While Turkish translations have often been construed as a product of nationalism, I argue that the rise of translation began with a renewed emphasis on the Qurʾanic theme of intelligibility bolstered by the availability of printed books, the spread of state schools, and increased knowledge of European history and intellectual currents. Turkish nationalists later adopted and advocated the issue, reconstruing the “Turkish Qurʾan” as a nationalist symbol. Over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the meaning of Qurʾan translation itself has changed and incorporated a variety of new concerns. iv Asserting translation of the Qurʾan in the late Ottoman Empire became synecdoche for a new vision of Muslim authority and modernity that reduced the role of the ulama and created space for interpretive plurality on an unprecedented scale. Meanwhile, some Turkish intellectuals came to appreciate the symbolic value of Turkish renderings for the assertion of national identity in the Islamic sphere. While the notion of translation as replacement has withered, in practice, translations have come to play a robust role in Turkish Muslim life as supplement and counterpoint to the Qurʾanic text. v Dedication For Cristina vi Contents Abstract .........................................................................................................................................iv A Note on Transliteration and Translation..............................................................................ix Abbreviations ................................................................................................................................x Acknowledgements .....................................................................................................................xi 1. Therefore, only technical terms and Qurʾanic passages are fully transliterated. Few graduate students have the good fortune to work with an advisor whose encouragement, humor, and magnamity rival his intellect, whereas the dawla of fortune has given me not one, but a team of such mentors. Bruce Lawrence has been pivotal to my scholarly formation as well as to this project. My gratitude to him is immense for his unfailing enthusiasm, critical insight and robust belief in my potential. His appreciation for the Qurʾan and interest in its translation have juvenated this project. I want to thank Ebrahim Moosa for his exacting standards, generosity with his time, energetic support, and good humor to match. Erdağ Göknar’s nuanced understanding of Turkish literature and history has been invaluable, and translating a late Ottoman novel under his guidance was a pleasure. Abstract: Doctor Abdullah Cevdet, who lived in a period in which trends of western origin were spreading rapidly in the Ottoman territory, is among the individuals who have been frequently discussed because of the ideas he defended and the manner in which he expressed them. Even though he was born into a devout family, he turned towards materialism and translated many works to Turkish, aiming to spread his views.

Çalışmamızda, Mehmet Akif’in İslamcılık fikirleri ve faaliyetleri hakkında bilgi verilmeye çalışılmıştır. Akif’in İslamcılık fikri için yaptıklarına değinilmiştir. Mehmet Akif’in Milli Mücadele’deki faaliyetleri ve fikirleri verilmeye çalışılmıştır. Akif, Müslüman toplumların, Gayr-ı Müslim toplumların boyunduruğu altında yaşayamayacağı fikrini savunmuştur. Osmanlı devletinin yıkılma sürecine girmesinden dolayı, imparatorluğun bünyesinde yaşayan devletlerin kendi kaderinin tayin etmesi gerektiği fikrini savunarak, Milli Mücadeleye her alanda destek vermiştir. Akif’in siyasi yönü üzerinde de durulmuştur. O siyasetin her türlüsünden kaçınmıştır, daha ileri giderek siyaset kelimesinden bile uzak durmuştur. Siyasetten Allah’a sığınmıştır.

  • Muhammad Speaking of the Messiah: Jesus in the Hadīth Tradition
MUHAMMAD SPEAKING OF THE MESSIAH: JESUS IN THE HADĪTH TRADITION A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Fatih Harpci (May 2013) Examining Committee Members: Prof. Khalid Y. Blankinship, Advisory Chair, Department of Religion Prof. Vasiliki Limberis, Department of Religion Prof. Terry Rey, Department of Religion Prof. Zameer Hasan, External Member, TU Department of Physics © Copyright 2013 by Fatih Harpci All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT Much has been written about Qur’ānic references to Jesus (‘Īsā in Arabic), yet no work has been done on the structure or formal analysis of the numerous references to ‘Īsā in the Hadīth, that is, the collection of writings that report the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad. In effect, non-Muslims and Muslim scholars neglect the full range of Prophet Muhammad’s statements about Jesus that are in the Hadīth. The dissertation’s main thesis is that an examination of the Hadīths’ reports of Muhammad’s words about and attitudes toward ‘Īsā will lead to fuller understandings about Jesus-‘Īsā among Muslims and propose to non-Muslims new insights into Christian tradition about Jesus. In the latter process, non-Muslims will be encouraged to re-examine past hostile views concerning Muhammad and his words about Jesus. A minor thesis is that Western readers in particular, whether or not they are Christians, will be aided to understand Islamic beliefs about ‘Īsā, prophethood, and eschatology more fully. In the course of the dissertation, Hadīth studies will be enhanced by a full presentation of Muhammad’s words about and attitudes toward Jesus-‘Īsā.

Furthermore, hadith, in its nature, origin and historical development with its close relationship with the concept of memorisation and later recollection came about after the time of Prophet Muhammad. This study will thus explore the reasons behind the prohibition, in its initial stage, with the authorisation of recording the hadiths and its writing at another time. The private pages of hadith recordings kept by the companions will be sourced and explored as to how these pages served as prototypes for hadith compilations of later generations.

This study examines what role chaos theory has within the education process and what effect it has by describing the views of university faculty regarding chaos and education. The partici- pants in this study consisted of 30 faculty members with teaching experience in the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Science and Literature, and the School of Veterinary Sciences at Mehmet Akif Ersoy University in Burdur, Turkey. The sample for this study included voluntary participants. As part of the study, the acquired qualitative data has been tested using both the descriptive analysis method and content analysis. Themes have been organized under each discourse question after checking and defining the processes. To test the data, fre- quency and percentage, statistical techniques were used. The views of the attendees were stated verbatim in the Turkish version, then translated into English by the researchers. The findings of this study indicate the presence of a “butterfly effect” within educational organizations, whereby a small failure in the education process causes a bigger failure later on. Key Words Chaos, Chaos and Education, Chaos in Social Sciences, Chaos Theory. S. Al-Zwainy Faculty of Engineering, Isra University, Amman, Jordan ABSTRACT This research paper gives a historic overview of the Palestnian architecture from the ancient times until today. The first chapter treats the ancient architecture. It introduces us to the first architectural findings on the territory of Palestine and the earliest Palestinian houses. We will see the differences of styles and buildings in prehistoric and ancient times from those built during Roma-Byzantine rule and later during ancient Greek-Roman influence. It is the time of the emergence and spread of Christianity, thus the period of building its temples - the churches. With the conquest of Palestine by the Arabs and islamization of the country the architecture suffers changes and is influenced by this new religion and new lifestile. Jerusalem becomes the beacon of islamic religion and culture. This period is the subject of the second chapter that gives us overview of the Palestinian architecture starting from Arabs installation in the 7th century and the crusaders wars, followed by the rule of Mamluk's dynasty. We finalize this period of influence in the Palestinian architecture with the rule of the Ottoman Empire. Despite the change of religions and cultures, churches and mosques are being constructed in each rule.
