Se presenta la primera parte de una serie de contribuciones al conocimiento de las mariposas (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea y Hesperioidea) del Pantepui. Se describe la morfología y la localización de los tepuyes, unas mesetas de origen precámbrico situadas en el Escudo de Guayana, en Suramérica. Se recapitula sobre la noción y el concepto de Pantepui, una entidad biogeográfica que corresponde sólo a los niveles montano, altimontano y altotepuyano de los tepuyes de Venezuela, Guyana y Brasil. Se comenta brevemente acerca de las hipótesis biogeográficas que intentan dilucidar el origen de la biota pantepuyana. Se revisa la historia de su descubrimiento y del estudio de sus mariposas. Se presenta por primera vez una lista comentada de varios taxones endémicos de la región. -

Comments on Appendices (Appendices 1-5 are available in Word and Excel forms; Publications are also in EndNotes©) Appendix 1: A list of publications derived from support from the BDG Program. The printed copy and pdf of this publication list are both in alphabetical order by first author. The Excel spreadsheet is arranged by date. There are currently 531 publications as of this printing. This list is a work in progress and is expected to grow as we add publications that have used the material we have collected; previously we had not kept track of these. Peer-reviewed publications are not marked because, with a few exceptions, everything is Peer-reviewed. For instance, we have not listed the many reports that we have done for various agencies, etc. Appendix 2: Staff, affiliates, fellows, etc that have worked with the BDG Program from 1985-2010. The Excel spreadsheet has five worksheets. Abstract Exceptional diversity of Stefania (Anura, Cryptobatrachidae) II: Six species from Mount Wokomung, Guyana. Six species of Stefania were collected on Mount Wokomung, a tepui in the Pakaraima Mountains of Guyana. This unusually high diversity of Stefania is similar to that found on a neighbouring tepui, Mt. Ayanganna. The two tepuis support slightly different habitats. Conspecific Stefania from the two mountains differ somewhat in body size, toe disc size and colouration. Specimens from Mt. Wokomung are used to expand descriptions and distributions of some species. Keywords: Anura, Cryptobatrachidae, Stefania, diversity, tepuis, Guyana. Introduction Stefania is a Guiana Shield endemic, occur- ring from the Essequibo River in Guyana to Since the genus Stefania was erected by western Amazonas State, Venezuela, and in Rivero (“1966” [1968]), 18 species have been northern Brazil (MacCulloch and Lathrop 2002, described (Rivero “1966” [1968], 1970, Barrio-Amorós and Fuentes 2003, Caramaschi Duellman and Hoogmoed 1984, Myers and and Niemeyer 2005). Herpetofauna Teresa Cristina Sauer Avila-PiresI Marinus Steven HoogmoedII Wáldima Alves da RochaIII Abstract: We discuss the herpetological results of seven expeditions to the Guianan part of Pará, which resulted in a total of 80 species of amphibians (77 frogs and three caecilians) and 95 species of reptiles (36 species of lizards, three species of amphisbaenians, 49 species of snakes, five species of chelonians and two species of caiman). We report six species new to science (three frogs, one caecilian, one lizard, one amphisbaenian), six new records for Brazil (five frogs, one caecilian) and 23 new records for Pará (13 frogs, four lizards, six snakes). For each of the new records we provide comments. Special comment is made about a large population of the toad Atelopus hoogmoedi that seems to be doing well and does not show any signs of population decline as many species of Atelopus at higher elevations do. We provide a complete list of species collected per locality containing data on endemicity, habitat, reproduction and food. For each of the seven collecting sites we provide data on richness and abundance of species. The sites are compared regarding their species composition, even though we can not say how much of the differences are due to specific habitats or geographic variation, seasonal variation or sampling deficiency.
