Maria Shishmanova THE CENTRAL REGIONS AND THE SOFIA AGGLOMERATION AREA Abstract. The research presents central regions in Bulgaria using taxonometric method with relevant conclusions. Each municipality in central regions is particularly examined by the elaborated methodic materials. The developed agglomeration areas are situated in the central regions. Sofia agglomeration area is presented using General Spatial Plan of Sofia municipality and Municipal Development Plan (MDP) of Sofia metropolitan municipality. It is set out the vision of development and its priorities, objectives and measures. Key words: central regions, agglomeration areas, Sofia agglomeration area, General Spatial Plan, Municipal Development Plan. Introduction The Central regions comprise 45 percent of the Bulgarian territory. The agglomeration areas are formed in them. The present study examines the development of the Sofia agglomeration area – a metropolis in the central regions of Bulgaria. The agglomeration areas are formed within the range of the central regions in Bulgaria – 6 agglomeration areas with a center – a large city, 30 agglomeration areas with a center – a medium-sized town. Six of the agglomeration areas are formations with more than three municipalities, five of them are with three municipalities each, ten are with 2 municipalities and the rest 15 are autonomous municipalities with an established core. These areas represent the backbone of the economy and social and human potential of the country. They have the highest degree of competitiveness and attractiveness for investment and innovation. Eighty eight municipalities with a total population of 5885455 people1 are included within the scope of the agglomeration areas, which constitutes 77.4 percent of the population of the country.

1 Synagogues in Bulgaria: A testimony of eighteen centuries of Jewish presence in the Balkans Elko Z. Hazan The purpose of this article is to outline the general history of synagogues in Introduction Bulgaria within its present boundaries. Te approach adhered to in following has been strongly influenced by the author‘s participation in preparing an exhibition for 2007‘s European Day of Jewish Culture organized by B‘nei B‘rith Europe, entitled “European Synagogues as Testimony of the Past” and designed by a team of specialists from the Jewish Museum of History in Sofa (JMHS). Te team‘s work on the exhibition proved to be a ‗treasure trove‘ in identifying the historical trends of development of synagogal construction on the continent. This is why the eighteen centuries long history of synagogues in Bulgaria reviewed here fits exactly into the context of the Braunschweig Congress—―Jewish Architecture in Europe‖. Rebuilding Bulgaria THE ESSETERRE CO-IMPACT STORY Melissa planting A New and Different Chapter for Bulgaria Bulgaria is a country rich with opportunity, but it has faced challenges in reaching its full potential. Bulgaria is part of the European Union (EU), but has one of the lowest GDP in the EU—with nearly a quarter of its population living at or below the global poverty line—and is experiencing at present the most extreme population decline in the world. Sadly, each year emigration erases dozens of towns from Bulgaria’s map. High death and low birth rates are also significant factors in depopulation, but lack of opportunity is the primary driver for this migration away from the country. As the nation’s men and women search for jobs abroad, severe structural and industrial decay become increasingly common. Experts on distribution of EU funds cite the high concentration of investments and resources in certain regions at the expense of others as a contributing factor to lagging infrastructure and a diminishing population. Before the fall of Communism, Bulgaria was not only produces some of the world’s best Lavender and an active industrial nation, it also had some of the Melissa. Bibliography 273 Abstract The nation-state is now the dominant form of sovereign statehood, however, a century and a half ago the political map of Europe comprised only a handful of sovereign states, very few of them nations in the modern sense. Balkan historiography often tends to minimize the complexity of nation-building, either by referring to the national community as to a monolithic and homogenous unit, or simply by neglecting different social groups whose consciousness varied depending on region, gender and generation. Further, Bulgarian and Serbian historiography pay far more attention to the problem of "how" and "why" certain events have happened than to the emergence of national consciousness of the Balkan peoples as a complex and durable process of mental evolution. This dissertation on the concept of nationality in which most Bulgarians and Serbs were educated and socialized examines how the modern idea of nationhood was disseminated among the ordinary people and it presents the complicated process of national indoctrination carried out by various state institutions.

This approach, which combined the conventional light microscopy (LM) and molecular-genetic methods (based on PCR amplified fragments of microcystin synthetase gene mcyE), revealed that almost all microcystin-producers in the studied eutrophic waterbodies belong to the genus Microcystis. During the molecular identification of toxin-producing strains by use of HEPF × HEPR pair of primers, we obtained 57 sequences, 56 of which formed 28 strains of Microcystis, spread in six clusters of the phylogenetic tree. By LM, seven Microcystis morphospecies were identified (M. aeruginosa, M. botrys, M. flos-aquae, M. natans, M. novacekii, M. smithii, and M. wesenbergii). They showed significant morphological variability and contributed from <1% to 98% to the total biomass. All data support the earlier opinions that taxonomic revision of Microcystis is needed, proved the presence of toxigenic strains in M. aeruginosa and M. wesenbergii, and suppose their existence in M.

ZooNotes 90: 1-3 (2016) …90… www.zoonotes.bio.uni-plovdiv.bg ISSN 1313-9916 Newly registered tracks of Raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) indicate the presence of resident population in the region of Bolata dere (NE Bulgaria) NIKOLAY NATCHEV Department of Integrative Zoology, Vienna University, Althanstrasse 14, 1090 Vienna, Austria; Faculty of Natural Science, Shumen University, Universitetska 115, 9700 Shumen, Bulgaria Abstract. The Raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides Gray, 1834) is an invasive species which was first recorded for the Bulgarian fauna in 1968. To date, data concerning the distribution of the species in Bulgaria are rather scarce and often provided by non specialists (mostly local fishermen and hunters). The present note includes information concerning the presence of Raccoon dogs in the region of Bolata dere (NE Bulgaria). Faeces and footprints were found in the springs of 2014 and 2015. Apparently, the predators are resident inhabitants of the site, so that particular population could be used for field surveys on the biology of the Raccoon dogs in Bulgaria. Key words: Bulgarian fauna, zoology, monitoring, Canidae, invasive species, predator Introduction The Raccoon dogs belong to an aberrant branch in the evolution of the canids, which had its phylogenetically split from the other dogs about 10 million years ago, or even earlier (see Wayne 1993). One of the Raccoon dog species - Nyctereutes procyonoides (native to the Far East), was artificially introduced to the western regions of the Soviet Union in the thirtieth year of the nineteenth century (for overview see Koneva & Durnev 2012). According to these authors, the populations of the Raccoon dog had increased dramatically in short period of time.
