Zappelli introduced herself to the audience and outlined the IOC's broad mission as a mechanism to showcase cooperation, peace, competitive spirit, and ethical behavior. Lalovic also addressed the delegation,emphasizing the recent efforts made by the sport to ensure fair play and ethical conduct. As an example, Lalovic discussed wrestling's leadership in the utilization of Blockchain technology to ensure 100-percent random and independently verifiable draws. The technology was then used moments later to draw the brackets for the first day of the competition with brackets in Greco-Roman 130kg, Greco-Roman 60kg, and Women's Wrestling 76kg all being drawn instantly on the big screen in Hall 5 of the Makuhari Messe. Lopez, Kayaalp Set for #WrestleTokyo Semifinal Collision Course TOKYO, Japan (July 31) --- A blockbuster day awaits wrestling fans on the opening day at the Tokyo Olympics as three-time defending champion Mijain LOPEZ (CUB) is set for a collision with Rio Olympics silver medalist Riza KAYAALP (TUR). The two were drawn on the upper side of the bracket at 130kg weight class and are on path to meet in the semifinal at the Makuhari Messe, Chiba on Sunday. The first set of draws was completed in Tokyo for two weight classes, 60kg and 130kg, in Greco Roman and one in women's wrestling – 76kg. Lopez will take on Alin ALEXUC CIURARIU (ROU) in the first round while Kayaalp will be up against Mantas KNYSTAUTAS (LTU). Fourth seed Amin MIRZAZADEH (IRI) will have to overcome Lopez in the quarterfinal if he wants to reach the semifinal. At 60kg, home favorite and world champion Kenchiro FUMITA (JPN) has drawn Abdelkarim FERGAT (ALG) and fourth seed Ali Reza NEJATI (IRI) is up against Armen MELIKYAN (ARM) in the first round. The other side can see two young stars U23 world champion Kerem KAMAL (TUR) and Individual World Cup champion Zholaman SHARSHENBEKOV (KAZ) meet in the quarterfinals. The winner can possibly wrestle second seed and former world champion Sergey EMELIN (ROC) in the semifinal. Wrestlers at 76kg in women's wrestling also received their draws and five-time world champion Adeline GRAY (USA) will be wrestling Zaineb SGHAIER (TUN) in her first bout while defending champion Erica WIEBE (CAN) will wrestle European champion Epp MAEE (EST) in her first round. Former world champion Yasemin ADAR (TUR) can wrestle Gray in the second round. The semifinal can see former Olympic champion Natalia VOROBEVA (ROC) wrestle one of them. But she has to go through Samar HAMZA (EGY), Elmira SYZDYKOVA (KAZ) and Aiperi MEDET KYZY (KGZ). In another top first-round bout, Aline ROTTER FOCKEN (GER) will take on Rio Olympic fifth-placer and former world silver medalist Vasilisa MARZALIUK (BLR). World silver medalist and local hope Hiroe MINAGAWA (JPN) begins her campaign against veteran wrestler Burmaa OCHIRBAT (MGL). Ochirbat is wrestling in her third Olympics and was one of the wrestlers from Athens Olympics as well. This research examines the athlete citizenry including (1) institutionalized meanings related to rights, roles, and responsibilities of high-performance athletes; and (2) the range of meanings of athlete citizenship negotiated by athletes. Document analysis and interviews with athletes and key informants have been deployed to synthesize an athlete citizenship framework. Findings from this research are: (1) athletes express a sense of belonging to a transnational community of high- performance and Olympic athletes; thus, it is possible to derive a definition of athlete citizenry by examining the athlete community through broader models of citizenship; (2) further work is needed to uphold and expand athletes’ rights; (3) athletes with recent high-performance success tend to engage in social initiatives to derive ‘deeper’ meaning from their sporting experiences. ii Acknowledgments I am incredibly grateful for my supervisory committee who have supported my academic journey, inspiring, guiding, challenging and educating me. Tkach came from behind in the semifinals to secure a fall over the reigning world champ and then edged XU Rui (CHN), 3-0, in the final to ensure her return to the top of the rankings at 63kg for the first time in a year. Tkach first rose to the top of the rankings with the women’s middleweight world title in 2014, but stumbled to No.2 after a loss to Valerie LAZINKSAYA (RUS) at last year’s European Games. Meanwhile, world and Olympic Games champion Kaori ICHO (JPN), stunned with a loss at the Yarygin Grand Prix in January, was the only other top-ranked wrestler in action in June, stopping a pair of would-be challengers from Azerbaijan to win the Poland Open at 58kg. Her return to action, however, was punctuated by a pair of technical falls, including a 10-0 triumph over European under-23 champion Tatyana KIT (UKR) in the Istanbul semifinals. Also, at the women’s welterweight, PUREVDORJ Orkhon (MGL) romped through the field in the Sassari International for her second tournament title of 2016 in an effort to convince the Mongolian coaching staff that she deserves the right to wrestle in Rio. Wiebe began wrestling in Grade 9, but soccer was her main star rose quickly. In 2014, her career-best year, Wiebe was crowned where she and everybody else expected her to be. Maroulis, who won the world title at 55kg last year, slipped out of a headlock early in the second period for a 2-1 lead in the 53kg final, then added a takedown with less than a minute remaining to give the United States its first Olympic Games gold medal in women’s wrestling. “I’ve been dreaming about wrestling Saori for so long. She’s my hero; she’s the most decorated wrestler ever,” Maroulis said after her victory. “It is such an honor to have wrestled her.” For Yoshida, it was the first time in 14 years that she had not finished on top of the medals podium after winning three Olympic Games gold medals and 13 world championship titles. “I should have attacked sooner and more quickly, but (Maroulis) was just stronger than me,” a disconsolate Yoshida told reporters after her loss. Japanese fans, however, regained some of their festive mood from Risako KAWAI (JPN), who claimed her first world-level title as a senior with three takedowns for a 6-0 win over Maria MAMASHUK (BLR).
