Since the creation of the international rankings in early 2013, Icho and her teammate Saori YOSHIDA (JPN) have remained constants atop their respective categories – 63kg and 55kg in 2013 and beginning in 2014, 58kg and 53kg. Even with a stunning loss to young Mongolian talent PUREVDORJ Orkhon (MGL) at the Yarygin Grand Prix in January, Icho remained at No.1 at 58kg throughout 2016, turning away upset-minded Valeria KOBLOVA-ZHOLOBOVA (RUS) in the final seconds of the Rio 2016 gold medal final. Yoshida, meanwhile, saw her run at the head of the 53kg rankings come to an end in Rio. Helen MAROULIS (USA), who had spent the year atop the 55kg rankings after winning the world title there in Las Vegas, won the duel of world champions and top-ranked wrestlers, 4-1. Gold medalists at the other four Olympic Games weight categories came from behind to claim their No.1 rankings. World champion Eri TOSAKA (JPN) had slipped to No.3 at 48kg after a loss to SUN Yanan (CHN) at the Asian championships in February, but rebounded for the gold medal with wins over Sun and European champion Maria STADNIK (AZE). Risako KAWAI (JPN), a silver medal winner at 63kg in Las Vegas, went from third-ranked to the top of the women’s middleweight category with wins over three European champions – past and present – Monika MICHALIK (POL), Anastasija GRIGORJEVA (LAT) and Maria MAMASHUK (BLR). Sara DOSHO (JPN), who has reached the medals podium at the world meet in each of the last three years, stunned London 2012 gold medalist Natalia VOROBIEVA (RUS) with a late takedown in Rio for her first world-level crown, going from No.5 to head of the class at 69kg. Erica WIEBE (CAN), meanwhile, went from second-ranked at 75kg to the top of the heap with a 3-0 win over European Games gold medalist Vasilisa MARZALIUK (BLR) in the semifinals and 6-0 triumph over three-time Olympic Games medal winner Guzel MANYUROVA (KAZ). The biggest movers of the month were Sakshi MALIK (IND) at 58kg and 2013 world champion ZHANG Fengliu (CHN) at 75kg, who both came into Rio de Janeiro unranked but left the 2016 Games with bronze medals. Wrestlers in the rankings are listed by name, country code, most notable or most recent result over the last 12 months, and their position in the previous rankings. (NOTE: The United World Wrestling rankings will take a break until after the world championships for non-Olympic weight categories are held in Budapest, December 10-11, and the 2016 year-end rankings can be compiled and released.) It is the fourth summer in a row since the international rankings were first created for United World Wrestling predecessor, FILA, that Yoshida and Icho are heading into the world meet holding the top ranking in their respective categories. This year, however, Yoshida and Icho are not looking ahead to the world championships but rather have set their sights on winning gold medals in an unprecedented fourth Olympic Games in a row. Meanwhile, the world champion duo Helen MAROULIS (55kg) and Adeline GRAY (75kg) have remained unchallenged in their categories, keeping an eye on becoming the first Olympic Games gold medalists in women’s wrestling for the United States. Valerie KOBLOVA (RUS) Icho, who suffered her first loss on the mat since 2003 in January, came back with a decisive triumph at 58kg at the Poland Open in June, but has watched as 2014 world silver medalist Valerie KOBLOVA (RUS) won the Spanish Grand Prix in July and climbed to No.2 in the rankings. Icho and Yoshida have won gold medals at their previous three Olympic Games and will be favorites to go where no wrestler – male or female – has gone before when they arrive on the mats at Carioca Arena 2 on Wednesday and Thursday. Greco-Roman legend Alexander KARELIN (RUS) is the only wrestler to have had a glimpse of a fourth gold medal when he advanced to the 130kg final at Sydney 2000. He had to settle for the silver medal, however, after a 1-0 loss to Rulon GARDNER (USA). According to an IOC Factsheet released October 2015, the only winners of four gold medals in the same individual events in the Olympic Games are Paul ELVSTROM (DEN, 1948-1960) in sailing, Al OERTER (USA, 1956-1968) in the discus throw and Carl LEWIS (USA, 1984-1996) in the long jump. Icho will get first chance at a fourth gold medal on Wednesday, August 17, when the women’s welterweights (58kg) take to the mat, while Yoshida takes her shot the following day at 53kg.

This research examines the athlete citizenry including (1) institutionalized meanings related to rights, roles, and responsibilities of high-performance athletes; and (2) the range of meanings of athlete citizenship negotiated by athletes. Document analysis and interviews with athletes and key informants have been deployed to synthesize an athlete citizenship framework. Findings from this research are: (1) athletes express a sense of belonging to a transnational community of high- performance and Olympic athletes; thus, it is possible to derive a definition of athlete citizenry by examining the athlete community through broader models of citizenship; (2) further work is needed to uphold and expand athletes’ rights; (3) athletes with recent high-performance success tend to engage in social initiatives to derive ‘deeper’ meaning from their sporting experiences. ii Acknowledgments I am incredibly grateful for my supervisory committee who have supported my academic journey, inspiring, guiding, challenging and educating me. Tkach came from behind in the semifinals to secure a fall over the reigning world champ and then edged XU Rui (CHN), 3-0, in the final to ensure her return to the top of the rankings at 63kg for the first time in a year. Tkach first rose to the top of the rankings with the women’s middleweight world title in 2014, but stumbled to No.2 after a loss to Valerie LAZINKSAYA (RUS) at last year’s European Games. Meanwhile, world and Olympic Games champion Kaori ICHO (JPN), stunned with a loss at the Yarygin Grand Prix in January, was the only other top-ranked wrestler in action in June, stopping a pair of would-be challengers from Azerbaijan to win the Poland Open at 58kg. Another pair of wrestlers battling for their country’s ticket for Rio 2016 at 58kg took their battle to 60kg and a five-wrestler round-robin at the Poland Open. The competition, opening Tuesday at Arena Riga, will feature freestyle and women’s wrestling sharing the mats for the first four days, concluding Saturday and Sunday with the focus on Greco-Roman. More than a dozen Olympic Games medalists are on the entry lists, including London 2012 freestyle gold medalist at 84kg Sharif SHARIFOV (AZE) and Beijing 2008 Greco-Roman champion Islambek ALBIEV (RUS) at 66kg.
