Tkach Unseats Soronzonbold at Poland Open for Top Spot in Women’S Rankings Date: July 7, 2016 at 4:10 AM To: Lanny@Wrestlingusa.Com From: Tim Foley [email protected] Subject: Tkach Unseats Soronzonbold at Poland Open for Top Spot in Women’s Rankings Date: July 7, 2016 at 4:10 AM To: [email protected] Tkach Unseats Soronzonbold at Poland Open for Top Spot in Women’s Rankings By William May CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (July 6) – Former world champion Yulia TKACH (UKR) stopped top-ranked SORONZONBOLD Battsetseg (MGL) at the Poland Open in June to reclaim the top spot in the United World Wrestling rankings for women. Tkach came from behind in the semifinals to secure a fall over the reigning world champ and then edged XU Rui (CHN), 3-0, in the final to ensure her return to the top of the rankings at 63kg for the first time in a year. Tkach first rose to the top of the rankings with the women’s middleweight world title in 2014, but stumbled to No.2 after a loss to Valerie LAZINKSAYA (RUS) at last year’s European Games. Meanwhile, world and Olympic Games champion Kaori ICHO (JPN), stunned with a loss at the Yarygin Grand Prix in January, was the only other top-ranked wrestler in action in June, stopping a pair of would-be challengers from Azerbaijan to win the Poland Open at 58kg. Another pair of wrestlers battling for their country’s ticket for Rio 2016 at 58kg took their battle to 60kg and a five-wrestler round-robin at the Poland Open. PUREVDORJ Orkhon (MGL), who won the Rio berth for Mongolia at the Asian qualifier in March, emerged the victor over 2015 world team member BAATARJAV Shoovdor (MGL) – each with three wins and a loss. Purevdorj edged up to No.7 at 58kg, while Baatarjav climbed to No.17. Katarzyna MADROWSKA (POL), who was also 3-1 at 60kg in Poland, joined 58kg runner-up Xu with the biggest advance in the rankings for June with each wrestler going from unranked to No.7 in their respective weight categories. Meanwhile, 2014 world silver medalist Iwona MATKOWSKA (POL) returned to the rankings after tumbling out in May. Matkowska won a bronze medal at 48kg in the Poland Open for No.10 in the rankings. Wrestlers in the rankings are listed by name, country code, most notable or most recent result over the last 12 months, and their position in the previous rankings. 48kg – Iwona MATKOWSKA (POL) rebounded from an early loss to European champion Maria STADNIK (AZE) to claim third place at the Poland Open with a win over world bronze medalist Jessica BLASZKA (NED). 1. Navigating Athlete Citizenship: The Negotiation of Rights, Roles and Responsibilities by Canadian Olympians by Rosannagh MacLennan A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Science Department of Exercise Sciences University of Toronto © Copyright by Rosannagh MacLennan 2018 Navigating Athlete Citizenship: The Negotiation of Rights, Roles and Responsibilities by Canadian Olympians Rosannagh MacLennan Master of Science Department of Exercise Sciences University of Toronto 2018 Abstract Forms of citizenship expand beyond those based on nation-state to involve populations at both sub-national and transnational levels (Roche, 2002; Yuval-Davis, 2006; Sindic, 2011). This research examines the athlete citizenry including (1) institutionalized meanings related to rights, roles, and responsibilities of high-performance athletes; and (2) the range of meanings of athlete citizenship negotiated by athletes. Document analysis and interviews with athletes and key informants have been deployed to synthesize an athlete citizenship framework. Findings from this research are: (1) athletes express a sense of belonging to a transnational community of high- performance and Olympic athletes; thus, it is possible to derive a definition of athlete citizenry by examining the athlete community through broader models of citizenship; (2) further work is needed to uphold and expand athletes’ rights; (3) athletes with recent high-performance success tend to engage in social initiatives to derive ‘deeper’ meaning from their sporting experiences. ii Acknowledgments I am incredibly grateful for my supervisory committee who have supported my academic journey, inspiring, guiding, challenging and educating me. Each has pushed me to explore the sporting world in which I live through a scholarly lens.
