And, for a second month in a row, one of Japan’s top female stars felt the sting of defeat. SUN Yanan (CHN) knocked three-time world champ Eri TOSAKA (JPN) out of the top spot at 48kg with a 5-4 win at the Asian championships in Bangkok, elevating world silver medalist Maria STADNYK (AZE) as the new No.1 at the women’s flyweight category. Sun, who came to Bangkok ranked No.3 after a win at the Rio 2016 test event in January, edged up to No.2 while Tosaka slipped to third. Tosaka’s setback followed the even more stunning loss by Kaori ICHO (JPN) at the Yarygin Grand Prix in January. Icho, however, still holds onto her top ranking at 58kg. Also in January, world silver medalist ZHOU Feng (CHN) emerged the victor and the new No.1 at 69kg at the Rio 2016 test event, after Dorothy YEATS (CAN) defeated world champion Natalia VOROBIEVA (RUS) in the quarterfinals and subsequently fell to Zhou in the finals. Other than Tosaka, the only other top-ranked wrestler in action in February was Oksana HERHEL (UKR). The world champion at 60kg tested the waters at 58kg at the Ukraine International and fell in the final, 8-5, to Natalya SINISHIN (AZE), who normally wrestles at 55kg. And, while the No.1’s were going about their preparations off the mat, six of the eight second-ranked wrestlers were in action – most notably with Stadnyk winning in Ukraine, Sofia MATTSSON (SWE) dominating the Klippan Open, and Risako KAWAI (JPN) taking her second Asian championship title. Along with Kawai, the top three women’s middleweights from Europe were busy doubling up on gold medals the last two months. Former world champ Yulia TKACH (UKR) took Dan Kolov and Ukraine; Anastasija GRIGORIJEVA (LAT) won the Schultz Memorial and Klippan Open, while Maria MAMASHUK (BLR) ruled over Paris and the Medved Prizes. Wrestlers in the rankings are listed by name, country code, most notable or most recent result over the last 12 months, and their position in the previous rankings. 48kg – Former world champion SUN Yanan (CHN) scrambled past top-ranked Eri TOSAKA (JPN) in the semifinals of the Asian championships to climb to No.2 behind Ukraine International winner Mariya STADNYK (AZE). Tosaka slips to the third position. A busy month for Jasmine MIAN (CAN) saw her collect a pair of bronze medals, the silver at the Klippan Open, and completing the set with a gold medal at the Pan American championships at 53kg. The productive month lifted Mian from 17th to No.5 in the rankings. 1. Mariya STADNYK (AZE) – World No.2 (2) 2. SUN Yanan (CHN) – Asia No.1 (3) 3. Eri TOSAKA (JPN) – Asia No.3 (1) 4. Tynybekova wasted little time scoring in her final against three-time European champion Anastasija GRIGORJEVA (LAT). Needing just one point to finish the match, Tynybekova shot a double leg and lifted Grigorjeva off her feet before bringing her to the mat for a five-point move to put an exclamation point on the match. Icho and Yoshida have won gold medals at their previous three Olympic Games and will be favorites to go where no wrestler – male or female – has gone before when they arrive on the mats at Carioca Arena 2 on Wednesday and Thursday. Greco-Roman legend Alexander KARELIN (RUS) is the only wrestler to have had a glimpse of a fourth gold medal when he advanced to the 130kg final at Sydney 2000. He had to settle for the silver medal, however, after a 1-0 loss to Rulon GARDNER (USA). According to an IOC Factsheet released October 2015, the only winners of four gold medals in the same individual events in the Olympic Games are Paul ELVSTROM (DEN, 1948-1960) in sailing, Al OERTER (USA, 1956-1968) in the discus throw and Carl LEWIS (USA, 1984-1996) in the long jump. Icho will get first chance at a fourth gold medal on Wednesday, August 17, when the women’s welterweights (58kg) take to the mat, while Yoshida takes her shot the following day at 53kg.

Tkach came from behind in the semifinals to secure a fall over the reigning world champ and then edged XU Rui (CHN), 3-0, in the final to ensure her return to the top of the rankings at 63kg for the first time in a year. Tkach first rose to the top of the rankings with the women’s middleweight world title in 2014, but stumbled to No.2 after a loss to Valerie LAZINKSAYA (RUS) at last year’s European Games. Meanwhile, world and Olympic Games champion Kaori ICHO (JPN), stunned with a loss at the Yarygin Grand Prix in January, was the only other top-ranked wrestler in action in June, stopping a pair of would-be challengers from Azerbaijan to win the Poland Open at 58kg. Another pair of wrestlers battling for their country’s ticket for Rio 2016 at 58kg took their battle to 60kg and a five-wrestler round-robin at the Poland Open. PUREVDORJ Orkhon (MGL), who won the Rio berth for Mongolia at the Asian qualifier in March, emerged the victor over 2015 world team member BAATARJAV Shoovdor (MGL) – each with three wins and a loss.

From: Tim Foley [email protected] Subject: Koblova Returns to Women’s Rankings; Focken, Wiebe Climb to No.2 Date: June 3, 2016 at 10:19 AM To: [email protected] Koblova Returns to Women’s Rankings; Focken, Wiebe Climb to No.2 By William May CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (June 1) – Valeria KOBLOVA (RUS) returned to international competition in May with a triumph in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games qualifier in Istanbul to vault to No.6 at 58kg in the United World Wrestling rankings for women’s wrestling. Koblova was the winner of bronze and silver medals in the world championships in 2013 and 2014 before having to sit out the 2015 world meet with a knee injury. Her return to action, however, was punctuated by a pair of technical falls, including a 10-0 triumph over European under-23 champion Tatyana KIT (UKR) in the Istanbul semifinals. Also, at the women’s welterweight, PUREVDORJ Orkhon (MGL) romped through the field in the Sassari International for her second tournament title of 2016 in an effort to convince the Mongolian coaching staff that she deserves the right to wrestle in Rio. Purevdorj, who stunned reigning world and Olympic Games champion Kaori ICHO (JPN) in the final of the Yarygin Grand Prix in January, saddled 2014 world champ and teammate SUKHEE Tserenchimed (MGL) with a 12-2 technical fall in the Sassari semifinals and edges up to No.8. Meanwhile, 2014 world champion Aline FOCKEN (GER) and Erica WIEBE (CAN) claimed the German Grand Prix titles at 69kg and 75kg, respectively, to climb to No.2 in the light heavyweight and heavyweight categories.
