Navigating Athlete Citizenship: the Negotiation of Rights, Roles and Responsibilities by Canadian Olympians Navigating Athlete Citizenship: The Negotiation of Rights, Roles and Responsibilities by Canadian Olympians by Rosannagh MacLennan A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Science Department of Exercise Sciences University of Toronto © Copyright by Rosannagh MacLennan 2018 Navigating Athlete Citizenship: The Negotiation of Rights, Roles and Responsibilities by Canadian Olympians Rosannagh MacLennan Master of Science Department of Exercise Sciences University of Toronto 2018 Abstract Forms of citizenship expand beyond those based on nation-state to involve populations at both sub-national and transnational levels (Roche, 2002; Yuval-Davis, 2006; Sindic, 2011). This research examines the athlete citizenry including (1) institutionalized meanings related to rights, roles, and responsibilities of high-performance athletes; and (2) the range of meanings of athlete citizenship negotiated by athletes. Document analysis and interviews with athletes and key informants have been deployed to synthesize an athlete citizenship framework. Findings from this research are: (1) athletes express a sense of belonging to a transnational community of high- performance and Olympic athletes; thus, it is possible to derive a definition of athlete citizenry by examining the athlete community through broader models of citizenship; (2) further work is needed to uphold and expand athletes’ rights; (3) athletes with recent high-performance success tend to engage in social initiatives to derive ‘deeper’ meaning from their sporting experiences. ii Acknowledgments I am incredibly grateful for my supervisory committee who have supported my academic journey, inspiring, guiding, challenging and educating me. A former Olympic Athlete. xi 1 Chapter 1 Introduction The first Olympic Games I remember watching were the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. I was four. Watching the Opening Ceremonies, I was captivated. Something about the celebration seemed so magical. I remember the moment that Team Canada walked into the stadium behind the Canadian Flag and thinking, “I want to do that!” The Olympic Games were fascinating to me; my parents indulged this new-found interest through sharing stories from the news about Canadian athletes.

This shift has involved a re–focusing of the empirical lens from the distress and pathology of traumatic experiences to a focus on growth and thriving in response to adversity or traumatic events. Multiple studies have identified that individuals recognise positive changes following their experiences of adversity to the extent that many individuals report development beyond their pre–trauma functioning. These positive changes have been broadly conceptualised as growth, a multidimensional concept, which typically involves an increased appreciation for life, more meaningful relationships, an increased sense of personal strength, a change in priorities, and a richer existential and spiritual awareness. Growth following adversity, or adversarial growth, is still relatively new in sport, and specifically elite sport, and accordingly the purpose of this doctoral research was to explore adversarial growth in elite athletes with a particular emphasis on the experiences of elite level swimmers. The research was grounded in a constructivist paradigm which assumes changing and sometimes conflicting social realities, and seeks to understand people’s constructions of their lived experiences. A qualitative methodology incorporating a range of methods and analyses was utilised.

Tkach came from behind in the semifinals to secure a fall over the reigning world champ and then edged XU Rui (CHN), 3-0, in the final to ensure her return to the top of the rankings at 63kg for the first time in a year. Tkach first rose to the top of the rankings with the women’s middleweight world title in 2014, but stumbled to No.2 after a loss to Valerie LAZINKSAYA (RUS) at last year’s European Games. Meanwhile, world and Olympic Games champion Kaori ICHO (JPN), stunned with a loss at the Yarygin Grand Prix in January, was the only other top-ranked wrestler in action in June, stopping a pair of would-be challengers from Azerbaijan to win the Poland Open at 58kg. Our 22 medals in Rio earned us a top ten fi nish in the medal table. Team Canada put an end to a 20-year medal drought for women in the pool and captured six medals in athletics. Canada’s Opening Ceremony fl ag bearer Rosie MacLennan took the top spot in women’s trampoline and became the fi rst Canadian summer athlete to successfully defend an individual gold medal. Andre De Grasse became the fi rst Canadian to win medals in three sprint events at one Games. High jumper Derek Drouin also made history Winston Chow/COC when he became the fi rst Canadian in 84 years to win Olympic gold in a fi eld event. 16-year-old swimming phenom Penny Oleksiak captured the heart of a nation as she authored the best- MESSAGE ever Canadian performance by a summer athlete and carried our fl ag into the Closing Ceremony.
