[email protected] Tkach Unseats Soronzonbold at Poland Open for Top Spot in Women’s Rankings By William May CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (July 6) – Former world champion Yulia TKACH (UKR) stopped top-ranked SORONZONBOLD Battsetseg (MGL) at the Poland Open in June to reclaim the top spot in the United World Wrestling rankings for women. Tkach came from behind in the semifinals to secure a fall over the reigning world champ and then edged XU Rui (CHN), 3-0, in the final to ensure her return to the top of the rankings at 63kg for the first time in a year. Tkach first rose to the top of the rankings with the women’s middleweight world title in 2014, but stumbled to No.2 after a loss to Valerie LAZINKSAYA (RUS) at last year’s European Games. Meanwhile, world and Olympic Games champion Kaori ICHO (JPN), stunned with a loss at the Yarygin Grand Prix in January, was the only other top-ranked wrestler in action in June, stopping a pair of would-be challengers from Azerbaijan to win the Poland Open at 58kg. Another pair of wrestlers battling for their country’s ticket for Rio 2016 at 58kg took their battle to 60kg and a five-wrestler round-robin at the Poland Open. PUREVDORJ Orkhon (MGL), who won the Rio berth for Mongolia at the Asian qualifier in March, emerged the victor over 2015 world team member BAATARJAV Shoovdor (MGL) – each with three wins and a loss.
