Although we were delayed somewhat (mostly 25-25 Jack McCormick Invitational, Hamilton 21-24 Oceania Championships, Christchurch, NZL due to late arrival of pictures from Australia) we Island Invitational, Victoria 28-9 European Championships, Helsinki, FIN decided to combine both competitions and thus catch 29-2 Man/Sask Champs, Winnipeg July up. Sorry for the delay. July 7-9 Darmstadt International, GER The Australians are a major power in the pool. 6-9 Ontario JR Provincials, Thunder Bay 11-11 British Championships, Sheffield, GBR Add to the mix the home-town support, saturation 7-9 Mel Zajac International, Vancouver 15 Traversee Lac Leman, SUI media coverage, and you’ve got the formula for 13-16 Youth/Junior Nationals, Etobicoke 20-23 Swedish Nationals, Landskrona, SWE success. Five world, 16 Commonwealth records, and 20-23 BC Provincials, Victoria 22-23 Vittel Cup Finals, Millau, FRA 100,000 paying spectators are the final payoff. 30 Thetis Lake Open Water, Victoria 27-30 European Junior Championships,Dunquerque, FRA August The Canadian Trials held two weeks later lacked 28-31 British Olympic Trials, Sheffield, GBR 3-6 Maritime Life Nationals, Winnipeg some of these elements. The first blow was the 12 Canadian 10K Championships, Victoria 27-7 FINA World Masters, Munich, GER unavailability of the new Speedo Body Suits for all October August competitors and SNC deciding to delay the use of 13-15 POW Invitational, Woodstock, ON 3-6 National Champs, Vevey, SUI these suits in Canada until everyone can get one. The November 4-6 National Champs, Belgium same suits were readily available to all in Australia. 10-12 Island Pacific Cup, Victoria 6-9 Italian Championships, Asti, ITA How these suits contribute to faster swimming is yet to 25-26 World Cup, Edmonton 9-15 Commonwealth Yough Games, Edingburgh, SCO be established. The records in Australia suggest they 12-13 Balkan Games, Nicosia, CYP are a factor, and the rash of more than 10 world 2001 17-23 Arab Tournament, Amman, JOR record elsewhere during the past four weeks suggest a February September record revolution is underway. 23-25 Youth & Junior Nationals 16-23 Olympic Games, Sydney, AUS The pre-selection of the three top Canadians East - Saint John, NB October from performances done last year did not contribute West - Saskatoon, SK 7-8 Bremen SC International, GER to faster swimming. World records were set in former March 12-15 SC Champs, Melbourne, AUS Canadian Trials when everyone had to perform in 14-17 Spring Nationals (50 m) Edmonton November Canada to earn selection. The eight-day format and May 17-22 FINA World Open Water Champs, the many rounds of swimming surely took their toll. TBA Mel Zajac International, Vancouver Ft. Lauderdale, USA Three Canadian records fell—Rick Say bettered July December the 20-year-old 400 freestyle time and Morgan Knabe 18-21 Youth & Junior and SWAD Nationals, Winnipeg 14-17 European SC Championships, Valencia, ESP August erased Victor Davis’ 100 breaststroke time. Shamek 16-17 British Winter Champs, Sheffield, GBR 7-10 Summer Nationals Pietucha lowered the 200 fly record. Only one of these record swims came in the final. US CALENDAR 2001 Not all individual spots were filled and a second June July opportunity to qualify has been made possible at 22-25 Cadillac 3, Santa Clara, CA 17-29 FINA World Championships, Fukuoka, JPN Summer Nationals in August. July August Media coverage during the Trials was very good 13-16 Cadillac 4, Los Angeles, CA 22-1 FISU Universiade, Beijing, CHN but whatever effect that had was all erased 14-16 Cadillac 5, Long Island, NY 25-7 Mediterranean Games, Tunis, TUN subsequently with the controversial appointment of a August September woman coach to the Olympic Team. 1-5 Speedo Junior Championships 29-9 Goodwill Games, Brisbane, AUS You’ll also find in this issue a historical review of West, San Antonio, TX November Canadian Trials since 1972. A two-stage selection was Southeast, Gainesville, FL 3-11 Afro-Asian Games, New Delhi, IND first held in 1988, similar to this year—a separate Northeast, Oxford, OH trials in late May-June and a Summer Nationals in 9-16 Olympic Trials, Indianapolis, IN 2002 August to fill any remaining spots. November April Not all countries duplicate the Olympic format at 18-19 FINA World Cup 1, College Park, MD TBA FINA World SC Champs, Moscow, RUS their Trials. Germany held a four-day meet, and 30-2 US Open (25 M), Auburn, AL July Great Britain plans a six-day meet in late July. 26-6 Commonwealth Games, Manchester, UK TOP entries were over 700, and we list all that 2001 August March submitted their performances on page 6-7-8. There is 25-30 Pan Pacific Champs, Yokohama, JPN 15-17 Women’s NCAA, Long Island, NY final opportunity to take part. Results will be 22-24 Men’s NCAA, College Station, TX published in late July. 27-3 World Champs Trials (50 m), Austin, TX 2006 TAG Times include all competitions we’ve August March received—either e-mailed or by more traditional 14-18 Summer Nationals 15-26 Commonwealth Games, Melbourne, AUS methods.

You will also find the standings of the first three places in all events for men and women at the Olympic Games followed by several classifications which are listed either by the number of titles or medals by swimmer or National Federation. It should be noted that these standings only have an historical aim but no sport signification because the comparison between the achievements of swimmers of different generations is always unfair for several reasons: 1. The period of time. The Olympic Games were not organised in 1916, 1940 and 1944 2. The evolution of the programme.

Ontario Aquatic Hall of Fame Newsletter - January 2017 Congratulations Olympic & Paralympic Games- Ontario Swimmers Swimming on Olympic & Paralympic Teams Mike West has provided us some insight as an Olympian and voiced his feelings about this Summer’s Games: 2016 Olympic Team: “It was so exciting to watch the Canadian team swim with such confidence. Javier Acevedo (MAC) We’ve been through some lean years with respect to medals for Canadian swimmers at Ashton Baumann * the Olympics, it is so validating to see our swimmers get to the podium, and win gold (Ottawa) medals - way to go Penny. Dominique Bouchard (OAK) Overall I’m feeling really hopeful about the future of Canadian swimming - I get the Santo Condorelli (Kenora) sense that the team feels like they actually belong at the party. Mack Darragh (OAK) Kennedy Goss * (GGST) Hilary Caldwell said it so confidently after her 200 back - that reaching the podium was Audrey Lacroix (ANM) now “normal” for Canadian swimmers - and I think this is such a shift in thinking for our Brittany Maclean (ESWIM) swimmers. Sandrine Mainville (CAMO) When I swam in 1984 it wasn’t “if” you made the podium, it was where on the podium Kylie Masse (WEST/UT) you would be standing. And that is the feeling that I think is spreading through our Martha McCabe (TSC) Canadian team after Rio - our swimmers now have the confidence to not only compete Penny Oleksiak (TSC) with the best in the world, but to also contend for medals, including gold medals, at the Erika Seltenreich- international stage. Hodgson (GO) So excited
