  • 2016 1 2017 Message from the Chair and President/CEO Richard Crépin and Peter Nicol
2016 1 2017 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR AND PRESIDENT/CEO RICHARD CRÉPIN AND PETER NICOL 2016-2017 marked another year of transition for Gymnastics Canada as we wrapped up the last year of our previous strategic plan and launched our 2017-2020 Strategic Plan. We are very excited about our new strategic plan as it will provide focus to the organization in all we do over the next four years: OUR VISION: OUR MISSION: OUR VALUES: Be THE foundation Build the foundation. Collaboration. Dedication. sport in Canada. Create champions. Excellence. Innovation. Consistently achieve Inspire the nation. Integrity. international success. To support this new direction, an organizational review was conducted over the fall to ensure alignment of resources. After a detailed external review and recommendations, staffing was initiated to introduce some modifications and key roles in the organization. These changes to the structure will enhance our current capacity and allow GCG to continue moving forward and enable us to achieve the objectives outlined in our plan. Reflecting on the success of the past year, and the conclusion of the last cycle, the highlight was definitely the outstanding performances at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Of particular mention of course is Rosie MacLennan who was the official flag bearer for team Canada during the opening ceremonies, and who picked up her second Olympic gold medal in women’s trampoline. Rosie also broke records as this was a first ever back-to-back gold in trampoline gymnastics, and a first back-to-back gold for a Canadian summer athlete. Way to go Rosie - we are so very proud of you! Another important highlight of Rio was Ellie Black’s 5th place all-around finish in WAG, another all-time best showing for Canada.

  • Navigating Athlete Citizenship: the Negotiation of Rights, Roles and Responsibilities by Canadian Olympians
Navigating Athlete Citizenship: The Negotiation of Rights, Roles and Responsibilities by Canadian Olympians by Rosannagh MacLennan A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Science Department of Exercise Sciences University of Toronto © Copyright by Rosannagh MacLennan 2018 Navigating Athlete Citizenship: The Negotiation of Rights, Roles and Responsibilities by Canadian Olympians Rosannagh MacLennan Master of Science Department of Exercise Sciences University of Toronto 2018 Abstract Forms of citizenship expand beyond those based on nation-state to involve populations at both sub-national and transnational levels (Roche, 2002; Yuval-Davis, 2006; Sindic, 2011). This research examines the athlete citizenry including (1) institutionalized meanings related to rights, roles, and responsibilities of high-performance athletes; and (2) the range of meanings of athlete citizenship negotiated by athletes. Document analysis and interviews with athletes and key informants have been deployed to synthesize an athlete citizenship framework. Findings from this research are: (1) athletes express a sense of belonging to a transnational community of high- performance and Olympic athletes; thus, it is possible to derive a definition of athlete citizenry by examining the athlete community through broader models of citizenship; (2) further work is needed to uphold and expand athletes’ rights; (3) athletes with recent high-performance success tend to engage in social initiatives to derive ‘deeper’ meaning from their sporting experiences. ii Acknowledgments I am incredibly grateful for my supervisory committee who have supported my academic journey, inspiring, guiding, challenging and educating me. Each has pushed me to explore the sporting world in which I live through a scholarly lens.

Tkach came from behind in the semifinals to secure a fall over the reigning world champ and then edged XU Rui (CHN), 3-0, in the final to ensure her return to the top of the rankings at 63kg for the first time in a year. Tkach first rose to the top of the rankings with the women’s middleweight world title in 2014, but stumbled to No.2 after a loss to Valerie LAZINKSAYA (RUS) at last year’s European Games. Meanwhile, world and Olympic Games champion Kaori ICHO (JPN), stunned with a loss at the Yarygin Grand Prix in January, was the only other top-ranked wrestler in action in June, stopping a pair of would-be challengers from Azerbaijan to win the Poland Open at 58kg. Another pair of wrestlers battling for their country’s ticket for Rio 2016 at 58kg took their battle to 60kg and a five-wrestler round-robin at the Poland Open. PUREVDORJ Orkhon (MGL), who won the Rio berth for Mongolia at the Asian qualifier in March, emerged the victor over 2015 world team member BAATARJAV Shoovdor (MGL) – each with three wins and a loss.

Koblova was the winner of bronze and silver medals in the world championships in 2013 and 2014 before having to sit out the 2015 world meet with a knee injury. Also, at the women’s welterweight, PUREVDORJ Orkhon (MGL) romped through the field in the Sassari International for her second tournament title of 2016 in an effort to convince the Mongolian coaching staff that she deserves the right to wrestle in Rio. Purevdorj, who stunned reigning world and Olympic Games champion Kaori ICHO (JPN) in the final of the Yarygin Grand Prix in January, saddled 2014 world champ and teammate SUKHEE Tserenchimed (MGL) with a 12-2 technical fall in the Sassari semifinals and edges up to No.8. Trampoline Trampoline is part of the gymnastics family of sports, where gymnasts perform acrobatics while bouncing on a trampoline. Qualifying – the road to Rio Qualification is based on the results of the 2015 World Championships, held in November in Denmark, and the 2016 Olympic Test Event in April at the Rio Olympic Arena. Medalists from the 2015 World Championships qualified a place at Rio, and then the next five best- ranked men and women qualified a spot for their countries at the Games, with a maximum of two athletes per country (eight spots each for men and women in total). New Zealand was just outside the required placings to earn a Rio spot via the World Championships, but earned a country spot at the Olympic Test Event. Young trampoline star, Dylan Schmidt, has been selected to attend the event. From the Olympic Test Event, the top five men and women will qualify a spot for their countries, with a maximum of one athlete per country. Brazil, as host country, is guaranteed a maximum of one competitor across both genders (one male OR one female gymnast). There is also a continental quota – there needs to be at least one athlete from each of the four continents. "To be part of something amazing, like the Olympic Games, with such an amazing athlete, how can you not get excited! He is not only the most talented, he is also the most focused, most determined and most importantly, the hardest worker.” "We have the opportunity not only to be part of history, but to create history.
