Kurtatsch / April 2010 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ewoLAB: ewo and Julien De Smedt (JDS Architects) unveil a concept light from the "Alphabet City Lights" project In the "ewoLAB" series the Bolzano-based, international manufacturer of high quality lighting systems launches projects in association with artists, d esigners and architects and explores light as a resource at a variety of levels. At Light+Building 2010 ewo will be unveiling a concept light based on the "Alphabet City Lights" developed by JDS Architects (Copenhagen, Brussels, Oslo). JDS, the internationally renowned architects' office, came up with the idea for "Alphabet City Lights". The aim of the development was to design a lighting system which responded in both form and lighting technology to the demands of the project. The post is made from a simple, round high-grade steel section, designed to emit light from a large number of apertures. The light represents a new, flexible principle which enables the designer to meet specific wishes and to respond to the surroundings. (ewo_concept_light): ewo and JDS Architects are developing a concept light. JDS Architects: Julien De Smedt is the founder of JDS Architects. The office was established in 2006. It now has a team of 50 working in its three offices in Copenhagen, Brussels and Oslo. The multi-disciplinary team of creatives comprises designers, architects and engineers. JDS Architects focuses its attention on architecture and design, planning and implementing everything from extensive projects to items of furniture. Kurtatsch / April 2010 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ( JDS "Alphabet City Lights"): The public will be given a first look at a concept light from the "JDS Alphabet City Lights" project at Light + Building 2010. Other ewoLAB projects: 2003: In 2003, the company explored the special significance of light in regard to cultural and religious traditions and festivities with, among others, Claudio Vietta, who now lives and works as a senior designer in Hong Kong. 2009: In spring 2009, ewo collaborated with the Norwegian design team Norway Says to exhibit the "Up" project at The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo. This involved an exploration of lighting and furnishings for the urban environment. "UP" is now one of ewo's standard lines of products. ewo received the iF Public Design award 2010, one of the most prestigious international design awards, for "Up". 2009: ewoLAB exhibited two projects at Transart 2009, a festival of contemporary culture in Bolzano (Italy). ewo implemented a light installation in collaboration with the artist Julian Koschwitz. In the "goccia a goccia" (drop by drop) project, the artist illuminated an empty pool, i.e. not containing any water, using 12 LED projectors. He created the impression of water through his choice of light colouring and the dynamic programming of the projectors. The project was a direct reference to the issue of shortages in resources. The second project supported by ewo comprised the stage lighting and light production for a play entitled "Jopas". The project was prepared and implemented for Transart at ewo together with the Japanese lighting designer Fujimoto, as well as students from the Faculty for Design and Art from Bolzano Free University over the course of a three-day workshop. Is this continent already in the line 17 of vision? Many European architects are currently building significant complexes: 2/20 the ARPT by Mario Cucinella, the new hospital in Tangiers by Architecture Studio or the future urban development in Oran by Massimiliano Fuksas, among other projects. But the African architectural approach also reveals real dynamics. This is the idea which seem to express the international exhibitions on African architecture during these last years, on the cultural side and architectural and archi-news archi-news city-panning approach, as well as in relation to the experimental means proposed by numerous sub-Saharan countries after their independence in the sixties, as a way to show their national identity. Not the least of contradictions, this architecture was often imported from foreign countries, sometimes from former colonial powers. The demographic explosion and the galloping city planning have contributed to this situation. The recent exhibition « African Capitals » in La Villette (Paris) proposes a new view on the constantly changing African city, whilst rethinking the evolution of the African city and more largely the modern city. As the contemporary African art is rich and varied – the Paris Louis Vuitton Foundation is presently organizing three remarkable exhibitions – the African architecture can’t be reduced to a single generalized label, because of the originality of the different nations and their socio-historical background. The challenges imply to take account and to control many parameters in relation with the urbanistic pressure and the population.

    JULIEN DE SMEDT E [email protected] Principal Director, Founder Architect MAA BIOGRAPHY Julien De Smedt is the founder and director of JDS Architects based in Copenhagen, with offices in Brussels and Oslo. A designer and architect whose work is known in Europe and abroad, Julien’s commitment to the exploration of new architectural models and programs has helped to re-energize the discussion of architecture in Denmark with projects such as the VM Housing Complex, Maritime Youth House and Stavanger Concert Hall. Born in Brussels to French art enthusiast Jacques Léobold and Belgian artist Claude De Smedt, Julien attended schools in Brussels, Paris, and Los Angeles before receiving his diploma from the Bartlett School of Architecture. Before founding JDS Architects, Julien worked with OMA, Rotterdam and co-founded in well known architecture firm PLOT in Copenhagen. Among other awards and recognitions, Julien received the Henning Larsen Prize in 2003 and an Eckersberg medal in 2005. In 2004 the Stavanger Concert Hall was appointed World’s Best Concert Hall at the Venice Biennale, and the Maritime Youth House won the AR+D award in London and was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe award. In 2007 Julien also won a large international competition for the new Holmenkollen Skijump in Oslo, and in 2008 he won the Kalvebod Brygge competition in Copenhagen. Julien has been a guest professor at Rice University in Houston, Texas and the University of Kentucky. Among other places, Julien has also lectured at the Sendai Mediatheque in Japan, the Architectural Association of Ireland, the Tate Modern in London, the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona, the Pavillon de l’arsenal in Paris, the McGill University in Montreal, Yale University in New Haven, and both SciArc and USC in Los Angeles.

Understood as one in the same thing, these architectural artifacts have guided our reading and perception of the city. Currently, with shifts in technology, governance and society, and the more overall processes of urbanization, these two entities – the material and organizational - have slowly started to drift apart. ADS9 will take its own position on what defines the contemporary institution. Projects will test the spatial consequences of these new definitions and explore the relationship between the material and immaterial constituents of the institution to make new proposals for architecture and for the city. Introduction As the earth’s surface is rapidly consumed by the ravenous process of urbanization, a formless mud that creeps ever outward and seeps into our cities under the guise of the regeneration schemes and masterplans, ADS9 asks what is the role of architecture in this squalid jumble? Architecture is the threshold, the defining moment between interior and exterior, it frames operations, configures exchange – it is the physical organisation of our coexistence. With this understanding we ask how the singular architectural intervention, or network of interventions, can be instrumental in today’s rampant disoriented scape of urbanization?
