We selected the obligation concept as a concrete perspective for our analysis and used it to examine the point at issue. The crucial issue was whether a person who is a member of a baseball club should take respon- sibility for the actions of other members of the same baseball club. First, we reviewed criticism of communitarianism to moral individualism. Second, we clariˆed the obligation concept as de- ˆned by Sandel, who is a representative of the communitarian viewpoint. Finally, we used that concept to frame the issue mentioned above. As a result, we propose that members of a baseball club have obligations of solidarity toward one another in terms of their communities, which in this case are both the baseball club and the school. The distinction between a local context of discovery and a global context of justification may be labelled as “local universalism.” It presupposes that, once global scientific knowledge is available, local conditions can only affect its applica- tion, interpretation or the choice of problems, but not modify its nature. Against this background, it is surprising that, in spite of the powerful political and eco- nomic globalization processes of the recent past and the globalization of science proceeding for centuries, today’s world of knowledge is anything but homogeneous. Underneath common standards, methodologies and widely accepted results of sci- ence, there is still a great variety of local traditions, of ways to choose problems, to interpret their solutions, to integrate scientific knowledge into belief systems and societal processes. The same holds, more generally speaking, for the ways in which knowledge shapes our identities, informs our practices and pervades our so- cial existence. It is hardly possible to understand this diversity and its relation to ongoing globalization processes without taking account of the fact that knowledge is stratified in a way similar to the stratification of geological layers, each coming with its own, often dramatic, history. The knowledge we deal with today is the result of history, of course. It is, more precisely, also the result of a historical superposition of globalization processes in which second-order knowledge, in par- ticular in the form of images of knowledge shaping its societal role, has continued to accumulate in such a way that later layers interfered with earlier ones, with- out, however, eradicating them completely.

To that end, we offer a wide variety of subjects so as to instill our “well-rounded experts,” as it were, with compassion and global-mindedness to pursue a richer and more varied lifestyle. Put simply, we hope that these will be the people to spearhead the creation of Japan as a fully internationalized nation that is as righteous and virtuous as it is prosperous. In order to achieve those lofty goals, students of the School of Business Administration are required to take a large number of general education and language courses. Specialist subjects, meanwhile, are taught in three discrete departments to enable students to delve more deeply into their chosen fields: the Department of Business Administration, the Department of Accounting and the Department of Public Management. Established in 1953, the Meiji University School of Business Administration was the first of its kind among privately-owned colleges. As we contemplate our 60th birthday in 2013, we take immense pride in the success of our alumni who have made rewarding careers in the private sector (at for-profit and non-profit organizations) and government institutions, as well as in such specialized occupations as certified public accountants and tax accountants.
