Berger U.S. Army Aviation Development Directorate Moffett Field California US ABSTRACT Over the past decade, NASA, under a succession of rotary-wing programs, has been moving towards coupling multiple discipline analyses to evaluate rotorcraft conceptual designs. Handling qualities is one of the component analyses to be included in such a future Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimization framework for conceptual design of Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft. Similarly, the future vision for the capability of the Concept Design and Assessment Technology Area of the U.S Army Aviation Development Directorate also includes a handling qualities component. SIMPLI-FLYD is a tool jointly developed by NASA and the U.S. Army to perform modelling and analysis for the assessment of the handling qualities of rotorcraft conceptual designs. Illustrative scenarios of a tiltrotor in forward flight and a single-main rotor helicopter at hover are analysed using a combined process of SIMPLI-FLYD integrated with the conceptual design sizing tool NDARC. The effects of variations of input parameters such as horizontal tail and tail rotor geometry were evaluated in the form of margins to fixed- and rotary-wing handling qualities metrics and the computed vehicle empty weight. -

Its purpose is to visualize the design process in more intuitive manner so that one can get an insight to the complicated aspects of the design process. By providing a tangible utility to the design process performed by the expert designers or guided by the system, novice designers will be greatly helped to learn how to approach a certain class of design. Not only as an analysis tool to represent the characteristics of the design process, the system will be useful also for learning design process. A design ontology is being developed as a critical part of the system, to represent designer’s activities associated with various design information during the conceptual design process, and then to be utilized for a computer environment for design analysis and guidance. To develop the design ontology, a conceptual framework of design activity model is proposed, and then the model has been tested and elaborated through investigating the early phase of architectural design. A design process representation model is conceptualized based on the ontology, and reflected into the development of the system. CONSUMING FASHIONS: TYPEFACES, UBIQUITY AND INTERNATIONALISATION Anthony Cahalan School of Design and Architecture University of Canberra ACT ABSTRACT Typefaces are essential to a designer’s ability to communicate visually. The late twentieth century witnessed the democratisation and internationalisation of typeface design and usage due to the ease of access to desktop computer technology and a related exponential growth in the number of typefaces available to users of type. In this paper, theories of fashion, consumption and material culture are used to explain and understand this phenomenon of the proliferation of typefaces. Theories are explored from outside art and design to position typeface designing as an activity, and typefaces as artefacts, within a more comprehensive societal picture than the expected daily professional practice of graphic designers and everyday computer users. This paper also shows that by tracking and thereby understanding the cultural significance of ubiquitous typefaces, it is possible to illustrate the effects of internationalisation in the broader sphere of art and design. CONSUMING FASHIONS: TYPEFACES, UBIQUITY AND INTERNATIONALISATION Technological and stylistic developments in the design, use and reproduction of text since the invention of the alphabet three-and-a-half thousand years ago were exponential in the last two decades of the twentieth century, due significantly to the ready access of designers to the desktop computer and associated software. The parallels between fashion and typefaces—commonly called ‘fonts’— are explored in this paper, with particular reference to theories of fashion, consumption and material culture. This represents the development of a theoretical framework which positions typeface design as an activity, and typefaces as artefacts, within a broader societal picture than the expected daily professional practice of graphic designers and everyday computer users. -

INTRODUCTION Project delivery using Design-build has become increasingly popular over the last thirty years. Owners have recognized the advantages of using a single source of responsibility for a project’s design and construction. Many contractors have recognized the popularity of design-build and have made adjustments to their business model allowing them to offer this one-stop system for project delivery. Architects and engineers also recognize that, unless they want to avoid this ever growing segment of the project design market, they too must adapt to working directly with the contractor. Nearly half of all commercial construction in the United States is being awarded using design-build as the project delivery vehicle, and the reasons are obvious. Owners perceive multiple advantages in using design-build. These advantages include, but are not limited to, a single source of responsibility for design and construction, the increased risk design-build transfers to the design- builder, the opportunity to fast track design and construction to reduce the time from concept to completion, and the owner’s ability to take advantage of the design-builder’s expertise in identifying design solutions. Changes in public procurement during the last 20 years have precipitated an explosion in the use of design-build by government agencies. -

Design-Build Contracts as an Alternative Method for the Construction of Public Buildings Sam Niece, P.E., Esq. Can a California general law city use design-build? It depends on what you mean by “design-build.” I. What is Design-Build? The term “design-build” refers to a range of alternatives to the traditional project delivery system. A useful way to look at design-build is by what it is not. Traditional design-bid-build is a segmented, sequential process where the owner first contracts with a design professional to prepare detailed, suitable-for-construction plans and specifications (or sometimes has them prepared by its in-house engineers), then uses the detailed plans and specifications to solicit competitive price bids for construction, and finally awards the construction project to the low bidder. In design-build, one entity performs both design and construction under a single contract. Government Code § 14661(b) defines the term as follows: “‘design-build’ means a procurement process in which both the design and construction of a project are procured from a single entity.” Public Contract Code § 20133(c)(2) defines the term in identical language. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) defines the term as “a process in which the Owner contracts directly with one entity that is to provide both design and construction services.” Usually, the design-build contract is awarded by some process other than competitive bidding. Government Code § 14661(d)(3)(A)(i) provides that “[a]ward shall be made to the design-build entity whose proposal is judged as providing the best value in meeting the interest of the department and meeting the objectives of the project.” Public Contract Code § 20133(d)(4)(B) provides that “[a] county may use a design-build competition based upon best value .
