Shaw b a Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University, USA b Department of Biology, University of Maryland, College Park, MD, USA Received 9 May 2005; revised 27 September 2005; accepted 4 October 2005 Available online 16 November 2005 Abstract Representatives of the Orthopteran suborder Ensifera (crickets, katydids, and related insects) are well known for acoustic signals pro- duced in the contexts of courtship and mate recognition. We present a phylogenetic estimate of Ensifera for a sample of 51 taxonomically diverse exemplars, using sequences from 18S, 28S, and 16S rRNA. The results support a monophyletic Ensifera, monophyly of most ensiferan families, and the superfamily Gryllacridoidea which would include Stenopelmatidae, Anostostomatidae, Gryllacrididae, and Lezina. Schizodactylidae was recovered as the sister lineage to Grylloidea, and both Rhaphidophoridae and Tettigoniidae were found to be more closely related to Grylloidea than has been suggested by prior studies. The ambidextrously stridulating haglid Cyphoderris was found to be basal (or sister) to a clade that contains both Grylloidea and Tettigoniidae. Tree comparison tests with the concatenated molecular data found our phylogeny to be significantly better at explaining our data than three recent phylogenetic hypotheses based on morphological characters. A high degree of conflict exists between the molecular and morphological data, possibly indicating that much homoplasy is present in Ensifera, particularly in acoustic structures. In contrast to prior evolutionary hypotheses based on most parsi- monious ancestral state reconstructions, we propose that tegminal stridulation and tibial tympana are ancestral to Ensifera and were lost multiple times, especially within the Gryllidae. -

Los ecosistemas urbanos son aquellos defi nidos como ambientes dominados por el hombre. Con el proceso de urbanización, insectos y arácnidos silvestres aprovechan los nuevos microhábitats que las viviendas humanas ofrecen. Se revisaron arañas recolectadas dentro de 109 viviendas durante los años de 1985 a 1986, 1996 a 2001 y 2002 a 2003. Se cuantifi caron 1 196 organismos , los cuales se determinaron hasta especie. Se obtuvo una lista de 25 familias, 52 géneros y 63 especies de arañas sinantrópicas. Se utilizaron 3 índices (ocupación, densidad y estacionalidad) y un análisis de intervalos para sustentar la siguiente clasifi cación: accidentales (índice de densidad de 0-0.9), ocasionales (1-2.9), frecuentes (3.0-9.9) y comunes (10 en adelante). Se comparan las faunas de arañas sinantrópicas de 5 países del Nuevo Mundo. Palabras clave: sinantropismo, ecología, urbanización, microhábitats. Abstract. However, imperfect allochrony and the expression of phenological plasticity can erode temporal barriers to gene flow and result in hybridization between divergent lineages. Here, we combine behavioural ecology and genomics to investigate this scenario in two closely related species of grigs in the genus Cyphoderris. These species exhibit a unique mating system whereby females feed on the fleshy hind wings of the male during copulation, and copulation with conspecific males is more likely in food-restricted females than in well-fed females. It was collected from the Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation of Daohugou Village, Ningcheng County, Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, China. This exquisitely preserved specimen exhibits clear wing venation and head structures, especially the mouthpart morphology. The stout mandibles bear well defined molar dentes which indicate an herbivorous feeding habit. Key words: Bacharboilus, new species, Jiulongshan Formation, mandibles Introduction A number of prophalangopsids collected from Chinese Middle Jurassic deposits have been described in recent years. (Hong 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986; Wang 1987; Lin & Huang 2006, Ren & Meng, 2006; Li et al. 2007; Fang et al. 2007, 2009; Lin et al. 2008; Gu et al. 2009, 2010). They are known based on forewing venation, but few with head morphology. Herein, we report a new species assigned to Bacharboilus Gorochov 1988, and provide more information on head characters of Bacharboilus. -

Approximately half of the species examined formed well-supported monophyletic groups, whereas the rest of the species were part of well-supported monophyletic species groups. Rather than viewing cases where species were not identiWed as being monophyletic as poor taxonomy, these cases more likely represent recent speciation and oVer insights into the process of speci- ation. The clade with the lowest levels of interspeciWc sequence divergence was found in eastern North America, whereas western spe- cies displayed much higher levels of interspeciWc divergence. These patterns appear to extend below the species level as well, with southwestern species exhibiting the highest levels of intraspeciWc sequence divergence and geographic structuring. The relationship between Agelenopsis and Barronopsis, a genus once considered a sub-genus of Agelenopsis, was also examined. The two genera are reciprocally monophyletic but more generic level sampling is needed to conWrm an apparent sister relationship between the two. -

ARTÍCULO: NOTES ON THE SPIDER FAMILY AGELENIDAE IN SOUTHERN SOUTH AMERICA (ARACHNIDA: ARANEAE) Martín J. Ramírez, Cristian Grismado & Theo Blick Abstract: The spider family Agelenidae is represented in southern South America only by three synanthropic, originally Palearctic species of Tegenaria: T. domestica (Clerck), T. pagana C. L. Koch and T. parietina (Fourcroy), the last of these newly recorded from the Western Hemisphere. The other records of Agelenidae in southern South America are misidentifications: Coreidon tropicum Mello-Leitão, from Brazil, is transferred to Strotarchus Simon (Miturgidae), Hicanodon cinerea Tullgren, from Argentina, is transferred to the Amaurobiidae, and Philoicides pallidus Mello-Leitão, from Argentina, is synonymized with Tegenaria pagana. Mevianops fragilis (Mello-Leitão) from Colombia, is synonymized with Tegenaria domestica. New South American records of Tegenaria ARTÍCULO: species are provided. Sites were in Douglas-fir forest (in the Coastal Western Hemlock region) and contained four forest successional stages: Regeneration (3-8 years), Immature (25-45 years), Mature (65-85 years), and Old-Growth (>200 years). Thirty-two species were collected in families selected to represent litter spiders. Several of the collected species are listed as potentially rare and endangered in British Columbia. The collection of Zora hespera is the first record of the family Zoridae in Canada. -
