Price1 and Daniel K. Young1 ABSTRACT The first comprehensive survey of Wisconsin Endomychidae was initiated in 1998. Throughout Wisconsin sampling sites were selected based on habitat type and sampling history. Wisconsin endomychids were hand collected from fungi and under tree bark; successful trapping methods included cantharidin- baited pitfall traps, flight intercept traps, and Lindgren funnel traps. Examina- tion of literature records, museum and private collections, and field research yielded 10 species, three of which are new state records. Two dubious records, Epipocus unicolor Horn and Stenotarsus hispidus (Herbst), could not be con- firmed. -

In total, 58 gnaphosid species and 16,592 individuals were collected. Cretan endemic Livestock grazing Gnaphosidae were negatively affected by intensive grazing and, contrary to findings on other taxa studied on the Habitat degradation island, they were sparse and rare throughout the study area. The species composition of gnaphosid assemblages was primarily determined by elevation. Trachyzelotes lyonneti, Urozelotes rusticus, Zelotes scrutatus, Anagraphis pallens and Berinda amabilis proved to be significant indicators of overgrazing. The vast majority of spiders belonging to synanthropic and nationally red-listed species were found in overgrazed sites. -
Abundance and Community Composition of Arboreal Spiders: the Relative Importance of Habitat Structure

Ross This work examined the importance of structural complexity of habitat, availability of prey, and competition with ants as factors influencing the abundance and community composition of arboreal spiders in western Oregon. In 1993, I compared the spider communities of several host-tree species which have different branch structure. I also assessed the importance of several habitat variables as predictors of spider abundance and diversity on and among individual tree species. The greatest abundance and species richness of spiders per 1-m-long branch tips were found on structurally more complex tree species, including Douglas-fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirbel) Franco and noble fir, Abies procera Rehder. Spider densities, species richness and diversity positively correlated with the amount of foliage, branch twigs and prey densities on individual tree species. The amount of branch twigs alone explained almost 70% of the variation in the total spider abundance across five tree species. In 1994, I experimentally tested the importance of needle density and branching complexity of Douglas-fir branches on the abundance and community structure of spiders and their potential prey organisms. This was accomplished by either removing needles, by thinning branches or by tying branches. Tying branches resulted in a significant increase in the abundance of spiders and their prey. Densities of spiders and their prey were reduced by removal of needles and thinning. -

Lindon, and J. A. Brazille Texas AgriLife Research 2301 Experiment Station Road Bushland, TX 79012 2008 Report Introductory Notes The invertebrate survey in 2008 presented an interesting challenge. Extremely dry conditions prevailed throughout most of the adult activity period for the invertebrates and grass fires occurred several times throughout the summer. By visual assessment, plant resources were scarce compared to last year, with few green plants and almost no flowering plants. Eight habitats and nine sites continued to be sampled in 2008. The Ponderosa pine/ yellow indiangrass site was removed from the study after the low numbers of species and individuals collected there in 2007. All other sites from the 2007 survey were included in the 2008 survey. We also discontinued the collection of Coccinellidae in the 2008 survey, as only 98 individuals from four species were collected in 2007. Pitfall and malaise trapping were continued in the same way as the 2007 survey. Sweep net sampling was discontinued to allow time for Asilidae and Orthoptera timed surveys consisting of direct collection of individuals with a net. These surveys were conducted in the same way as the time constrained butterfly (Papilionidea and Hesperoidea) surveys, with 15-minute intervals for each taxanomic group. This was sucessful when individuals were present, but the dry summer made it difficult to assess the utility of these techniques because of overall low abundance of insects. -

INTRODUCTION The family popularly known as 'click-beetles' is designated Elateridae under superfamily Elateroidea in the suborder Polyphaga. The larvae of these primarily nocturnal beetles are known as 'wire wonns', a serious pest of certain crops (Stebbing, 1914). These beetles are found throughout India where extensive vegetative covers are in extant. Some however, have been collected from' sandy beds of hilly, areas (members of the genus Meristhus). The name of the family Elateridae Leach 1815 was based on the tribe Elaterites Leach, 1815. Elaler Linnaeus, 1758 was the type genus of the tribe Elaterites ... Supra specific definition and limit of this family remains confusing and the classification of this group of beetles has been regarded by some chief authors as 'almost hopeless' (Stibick, 1979). However, several schemes of classification have been forwarded by different authors (Laccordaire 1857, Candeze 1891, Fiautiaux 1941, Schwarz 1906, Stibick 1979). Authorities varied in their opinion regarding limit and definition of various categories such as subtribes, tribes and subfamilies and some treat them as subfamilies of equal rank. For a number of reasons, including purposes of reference and classification, this arrangement has not been satisfactory. Several authors Hyslop (1917), Crowson (1961), Gurjeva (1969, 1974) tried to improve the elaterid classification. Stibick (1979) classified Elateridae into 12 subfamilies and 27 tribes, 5 of those tribes are again divided into 20 subtribes; most of the subfamilies of other authors have been ranked as tribe by Stibick (op. -

Correspondence: Universidade dos Açores, Departamento de Ciências Agrárias, Terra-Chã, 9701-851 Angra do Heroísmo, Portugal. – [email protected] Abstract: The knowledge of Iberian spider species and their distributions has undergone several development stages. The ac- cumulation of knowledge, reinforced by the emergence on the last years of several associations devoted to the study of arach- nids, allowed us to currently register more than 1300 species in the Iberian Peninsula. In a project started by Eduardo Morano and now with my cooperation, the new Iberian spider catalogue is being developed and is partly available online. However, even if all existing data are compiled, they still present two main problems. Firstly, they are incomplete for the vast majority of the species. Secondly, the heterogeneity of the studies that recorded the data does not allow direct or reliable comparisons between areas. Both the reasonable completeness of the data and its comparability are essential for, among oth- ers, biogeography and conservation studies. These two targets can only be guaranteed by the use of optimized and standar- dized sampling protocols. Based on intensive fieldwork made in different areas and habitats in Portugal, a flexible sampling pro- tocol has been developed which, will allow different teams with multiple objectives to compare results among each other, a pro- cedure not possible until the present. -
