The Nativity Chapel in Burgos Cathedral provides an outstanding case study on this subject. It was built in 1571-1582 by Martín de Bérriz and Martín de la Haya, using an oval vault resting on trumpet squinches to span a rectangular bay. Bed joints and rib axes are not planar curves, as usual in oval vaults. This warping is not capricious; we shall argue that it is the outcome of a systematic tracing method. As a result of this process, the slope of the bed joints increases slightly in the first courses, but stays fairly constant after the third course; this solution prevents the upper courses from slipping. Thus, in the Nativity Chapel of Burgos Cathedral, the constraints of masonry construction fostered a singular solution verging on capriccio. It is also worthwhile to remark that the warping of the joints is not easily appreciable to the eye and that the tracing process does not seem to start from a previous conception of the resulting form. All this suggests that we should be quite careful when talking about the whimsical character of Late Gothic and Early Renaissance; in some occasions, apparent caprice is the offspring of practical thinking. -

7. Bóvedas de crucería no canónicas (1681). Este texto ha sido analizado en la primera parte de la tesis (cfr. capítulo 4, apartado 4.3). Aunque no coinciden con la solución final adoptada, en las trazas aparecen dibujados tres propuestas de diseño de nervios para las bóvedas de la girola que adaptan la crucería a la planta trapecial. Este ajuste en planta implica necesariamente, una adaptación de la volumetría de la bóveda, donde entran en juego mecanismos de diseño distintos de los habituales. Sin embargo, aunque las dimensiones de la girola vengan condicionadas por las del resto del templo, no hay una solución única ya que es posible actuar sobre algunas variables como el punto de inicio de la girola o el centro de radiación.63 Sin duda la mayor dificultad radica en la división en tramos de la girola. -

Each semester, Sally’s courses taught downtown in the art history building carried me into the heart of the city, a path that became fortuitous. I expected to be launched towards museum curation and am grateful for the influences—especially the walks downtown and hours writing papers on park benches —that shifted my attention towards the built environment and curating public spaces. Two years in the company of poets, architectural historians, musicians, ministers-to-be, and liturgically-minded people at the ISM has been invaluable.” Elizabeth is grateful for the ISM’s support, including conference travels and collaborative place-based projects. After graduation, she looks forward to serving on church building committees and working as a project manager of public space activation and design for downtown New Haven. -

D. Cornell University 2010 Beginning in the late Middle Ages and continuing into the early modern period, merchants throughout western Europe became influential members of the growing middle class, and with this growing wealth and influence also came artistic patronage. Although the patronage of merchants from other areas of the western world, specifically Italy and Northern Europe, has been studied in some detail, the examination of merchant patrons from Iberia, and specifically Castile, has been largely neglected. Accordingly, this study offers unprecedented analysis of the funerary altarpiece commissioned at the turn of the sixteenth century by the Castilian merchant Gonzalo López de Polanco for the high altar of the parish church of San Nicolás de Bari in Burgos, Spain. Through the analysis of this altarpiece, this project examines the devotional life and social aspirations of the merchant patron as well as the function of the altarpiece in its original location, doing so through the consideration of contemporary liturgical and devotional texts as well as the patron’s testament. Moreover, this study addresses how this altarpiece compares to others commissioned by merchant, noble, ecclesiastical and royal patrons in Burgos around the turn of the sixteenth century, a time when Castilian attitudes toward religious devotion were changing due to increased contact with the rest of Europe and the importation of various religious texts under Ferdinand and Isabel. -

GREGORIO BIGARNY (OR PARDO) (BURGOS, C. 1513 – 1551) VIRGEN CON EL NIÑO (VIRGIN AND CHILD) Alabaster Heigh: 10.24 inches Width: 9.84 inches This small and delicate alabaster piece intended for worship must be classified among the Italian-inspired models carried out by Spanish Renaissance sculptors in the cities of Burgos, Valladolid and Toledo in the first half of the 16th century. In fact, this piece reminds of the Florentine Quattrocento prototypes and the models by Donatello o Mino da Fiesole and, above all, to those by the Della Robbia family (Lucca, Andrea, Giovanni, etc.) that become very popular in mid-15th century. From this Virgin and Child prototype a great number of pieces in enameled terracotta were created, also intended for worship and with slight variations mainly related to the different positions and attitude of the child and how the Virgin holds him (fig. 1). 1 Fig. 1. Virgins with Child belonging to the Della Robbia family Louvre, Bargello, Metropolitan, etc. These aesthetic and composite models were introduced in Spain by Spanish artists who visited Italy and brought back the new techniques and trends seen there and revolutioned the work done in the peninsula until then. Regarding sculpture, the most important artists were Diego de Siloe, Alonso Berruguete, Bartolome Ordoñez and Gaspar Becerra. Felipe Bigarny excelled among the foreigners, though his work was commissioned by the Monarchy. As we will see, several, very similar pieces with type of relief are kept. They are related to the work of Diego de Siloe, Felipe Bigarny and, above all, with the latter's son, Gregorio Bigarny (or Pardo) with whom, both because of the composite, aesthetic and technique similarities, are directly related to the work now being discussed.
