Gorakhpur University D.D.U. Gorakhpur University Gorakhpur, India Gorakhpur, India [email protected] [email protected] Abstract: The wheat aphid, Sitobion miscanthi (Takahashi) (Aphididae: Hemiptera) is a destructive aphid, native to Formosa but now distributed in many wheat growing countries of the world. It is a small (apterae 3.05-3.45 mm, alatae 2.35–2.92 mm) greenish to brownish aphid with dark siphunculi and light coloured cauda. Young ones are yellowish green in colour while grown-ups are light brownish to blackish brown. In India, it is reported on 84 plant species belonging to 13 plant families. It infests especially plant families Poaceae (Graminae). In northeastern Uttar Pradesh it was observed on feeding five host plants: Avena sativa L., Hordeum vulgare L., Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br., Phalaris minor Retz, and Triticum aestivum L. In this article the taxonomic status, synonymy, economic importance, distribution, life history, and food plants of S. miscanthi were described. The adult parthenogenetic viviparous apterae and alatae as well as alate male (sexual morph, not recorded in the study area) were morphologically described giving the morphometry of all taxonomic characters along with illustrations. Several taxonomic characters of the first to fourth instar nymphs of apterous morph of S.

Mutiny in Hunan: Writing and Rewriting the “Warlord Era” in Early Republican Chinese History By Jonathan Tang A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in Charge: Professor Wen-hsin Yeh, Chair Professor Peter Zinoman Professor You-tien Hsing Summer 2019 Mutiny in Hunan: Writing and Rewriting the “Warlord Era” in Early Republican Chinese History Copyright 2019 By Jonathan Tang Abstract Mutiny in Hunan: Writing and Rewriting the “Warlord Era” in Early Republican Chinese History By Jonathan Tang Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Wen-hsin Yeh, Chair This dissertation examines a 1920 mutiny in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province, as a way of challenging the dominant narrative of the early republican period of Chinese history, often called the “Warlord Era.” The mutiny precipitated a change of power from Tan Yankai, a classically trained elite of the pre-imperial era, to Zhao Hengti, who had undergone military training in Japan. Conventional histories interpret this transition as Zhao having betrayed his erstwhile superior Tan, epitomizing the rise of warlordism and the disintegration of traditional civilian administration; this dissertation challenges these claims by showing that Tan and Zhao were not enemies in 1920, and that no such betrayal occurred. These same histories also claim that local governance during this period was fundamentally broken, necessitating the revolutionary party-state of the KMT and CCP to centralize power and restore order. Though this was undeniably a period of political turmoil, with endemic low-level armed conflict, this dissertation juxtaposes unpublished material with two of the more influential histories of the era to show how this narrative has been exaggerated to serve political aims.

Razafimandimbison,1 Kent Kainulainen,1,2 Khoon M. Wong, 3 Katy Beaver4 & Birgitta Bremer1 1 Bergius Foundation, Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and Botany Department, Stockholm University, 10691 Stockholm, Sweden 2 Department of Botany, Stockholm University, 10691, Stockholm, Sweden 3 Singapore Botanic Gardens, 1 Cluny Road, Singapore 259569 4 Plant Conservation Action Group, P.O. Box 392, Victoria, Mahé, Seychelles Author for correspondence: Sylvain G. Razafimandimbison, [email protected] Abstract Many monotypic genera with unique apomorphic characters have been difficult to place in the morphology-based classifications of the coffee family (Rubiaceae). We rigorously assessed the subfamilial phylogenetic position and generic status of three enigmatic genera, the Seychellois Glionnetia, the Southeast Asian Jackiopsis, and the Chinese Trailliaedoxa within Rubiaceae, using sequence data of four plastid markers (ndhF, rbcL, rps16, trnTF). The present study provides molecular phylogenetic support for positions of these genera in the subfamily Ixoroideae, and reveals the presence of a basal grade of morphologically distinct, monotypic genera (Crossopteryx, Jackiopsis, Scyphiphora, Trailliaedoxa, and Glionnetia, respectively) in the species-rich Vanguerieae alliance. These five genera may represent sole representatives of their respective lineages and therefore may carry unique genetic information. Their conservation status was assessed, applying the criteria set in IUCN Red List Categories. We consider Glionnetia and Jackiopsis Endangered. Scyphiphora is recognized as Near Threatened despite its extensive range and Crossopteryx as Least Concern.
