BMC Evolutionary Biology 2014, 14:220 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2148/14/220 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Cretaceous environmental changes led to high extinction rates in a hyperdiverse beetle family Gael J Kergoat1*, Patrice Bouchard2, Anne-Laure Clamens1, Jessica L Abbate3, Hervé Jourdan4, Roula Jabbour-Zahab3, Gwenaelle Genson1, Laurent Soldati1 and Fabien L Condamine5 Abstract Background: As attested by the fossil record, Cretaceous environmental changes have significantly impacted the diversification dynamics of several groups of organisms. A major biome turnover that occurred during this period was the rise of angiosperms starting ca. 125 million years ago. Though there is evidence that the latter promoted the diversification of phytophagous insects, the response of other insect groups to Cretaceous environmental changes is still largely unknown. To gain novel insights on this issue, we assess the diversification dynamics of a hyperdiverse family of detritivorous beetles (Tenebrionidae) using molecular dating and diversification analyses. Results: Age estimates reveal an origin after the Triassic-Jurassic mass extinction (older than previously thought), followed by the diversification of major lineages during Pangaean and Gondwanan breakups. Dating analyses indicate that arid-adapted species diversified early, while most of the lineages that are adapted to more humid conditions diversified much later. Contrary to other insect groups, we found no support for a positive shift in diversification rates during the Cretaceous; instead there is evidence for an 8.5-fold increase in extinction rates that was not compensated by a joint increase in speciation rates. Conclusions: We hypothesize that this pattern is better explained by the concomitant reduction of arid environments starting in the mid-Cretaceous, which likely negatively impacted the diversification of arid-adapted species that were predominant at that time. -

Both these species are very similar to each other, sharing such characters as a reduced unguiculus, 4 papillae and 3 guard chaetae on the Ant. III sensory organ, the AC type of labium, 5+5 chaetae on Th. I tergum, 9 distal tibiotarsal chaetae, as well as the absence of anal spines. Yet they can be differentiated by the presence vs. absence of pso on Th. I tergum, of chaetae p2 on Th. II tergum, and of chaetae b2 on the upper anal valve, respectively, as well as by the number of dorsal S-chaetae, of sublobal hair on the maxillary palp, of p-row chaetae on Abd. IV tergum. Scarpulla The Maryland Entomological Society (MES) was founded in November 1971, to promote the science of entomology in all its sub-disciplines; to provide a common meeting venue for professional and amateur entomologists residing in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and nearby areas; to issue a periodical and other publications dealing with entomology; and to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information through its meetings and publications. The MES was incorporated in April 1982 and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, scientific organization. The MES logo features an illustration of Euphydryas phaëton (Drury), the Baltimore Checkerspot, with its generic name above and its specific epithet below (both in capital letters), all on a pale green field; all these are within a yellow ring double-bordered by red, bearing the message “● Maryland Entomological Society ● 1971 ●”. All of this is positioned above the Shield of the State of Maryland. In 1973, the Baltimore Checkerspot was named the official insect of the State of Maryland through the efforts of many MES members. Membership in the MES is open to all persons interested in the study of entomology. All members receive the annual journal, The Maryland Entomologist, and the monthly e-newsletter, Phaëton.
