No sooner have older ones come to grips with Millennials than Generation Z has arrived in the ecosystem. Though the first of Generation Z are finishing school, they Iare not interested in careers. They prefer “side” work or setting up their own business online and are more attuned to opportunities living online. Like Millennials, they expect instant satisfaction but their ambitions are said to be more realistic, more to do with financial stability and social responsibility. Most Gen Zs have likely never posted a letter, read a newspaper or even used a phone with a numeric keypad. Across the developed world, Millennials, who reached adulthood in the early 2000s, embraced the digital revolution and helped drive its innovation, while Gen Z was born into a digital world. In the entertainment industry, we have seen the exponential growth of Gen Z in a space where Millennials are finding it hard to adapt. This edition combines the faces from Millennials and Gen Z with our cover star taking the lead for Gen Z. • Nigerian Values and Contemporary Popular Music: a New Look
NIGERIAN VALUES AND CONTEMPORARY POPULAR MUSIC: A NEW LOOK Ebele Ojukwu, Elizabeth Obielozie & Chinyere Esimone http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/og.v12i s1.7 Abstract Music is among the ancient art forms in Africa that has flourished as old as man since ancient African society did not separate their everyday activities from their music. Most music performances in Africa go beyond the frontiers of mere entertainment activity but are geared more towards socio-cultural dimensions due to its ability to socialize, consolidate values and other utilitarian exigencies. In the recent times, the younger generations of Africa seem not to have much enthusiasm for their cultural values due to undue foreign influences. Nigerian contemporary pop music is playing an increasingly pivotal role in shaping the continent’s music scene. This paper seeks to portray contemporary pop music as a paradigmatic approach to enliven and perpetuate positive cultural as well as moral values in the Nigerian youths. The paper argues that contemporary Nigerian music can be employed to connect the African heritage to the world and African youths in diaspora will also have the opportunity to hear, touch, feel and create the musical art even in a distant homeland. It concludes by pointing out the need for Nigerian government to turn towards the entertainment industry and indeed the music industry with the objective of identifying possible avenues for growth in the industry, and for cultural sustainability in Nigeria. Keywords: Nigerian values, Music industry, Contemporary popular music, Youths and society Introduction Before the advent of colonialism in Nigeria, the Igbo traditional community, maintain highly and uncontaminated cultural and moral values.

  • An Appraisal of the State of Professional Songwriting
AN APPRAISAL OF THE STATE OF PROFESSIONAL SONGWRITING ON THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.0 Introduction Nelson (2010), making reference to a Music quote by Henry Giles, mentioned that “A song will outlive all sermons in the memory”. “Every song is like a painting”, Dale (2013) and every picture tells a story. Also, “Great music is that which penetrates the ear with facility and leaves the memory with difficulty because Magical music never leaves the memory”, Beecham (2015). Songwriting may mean different things to different songwriters and at different times. Songwriting, like any other creative endeavor, can be meaningful in a variety of ways. So while there are some objective ways to determine “good” or “bad” when it comes to songwriting, it is also a creative space open to a myriad of options. “A Creative mind has the ability to make discoveries and create innovations”, Rivera, (2014). 1.1 Background to the Study The American Heritage Dictionary of English language, 5thEdition, (2013) defines a songwriter as one who writes lyrics or tunes (or both). They are often referred to as ballad makers, tunesmiths, composers - someone who writes the lyrics and usually the Music of Songs. To some extent a songwriter is much like a storyteller and the listeners are his captive audience. Most songs revolve around a central theme such as love, friendship, struggle, triumph, or other forms of experiences, etc. Every song tells a different story while each song usually contains an atom or 1 atoms of uniqueness which makes them differ from the works of other composers and songwriters.

Students’ exposure to music was limited and contents of lessons disparate from what they appreciate as music. Making bleak their hope and expectation of being functional and useful members of their society via the study of music. The teachers disclosed that western-oriented curriculum and their western-oriented training are major impediments to equipping Nigerian learners for careers in music. Through empirical processes to propose for the upgrading of the number and usage of indigenous instruments and repertoire in schools and colleges for better appreciation and application of musical knowledge and skills for the teachers, the learners, the profession and the society. The writer recommends seminars and workshops at both the state and federal levels to sensitise music teachers (especially the teachers of the new Cultural and Creative Arts Curriculum) on the pedagogical potentialities of indigenous instruments and repertoires. Like most writers, I love words the way Hkids devour their favourite candy and dudes roar about their favourite football clubs. There was a period in my writing journey when I wasn't getting the feedback I wanted. I would painstakingly craft those words like a sculptor sculpts beautiful artistic pieces and I won't even get a like on Facebook or endless flows of comments on my blog. Then it dawned on me - my eureka moment came; life slapped me and my wake- up call embraced me. Like Betty Irabor would say, “Whenever you wake up is your morning.” I woke up from my slumber. I started seeing myself in a different light; applying some no nonsense, unusual principles that made me slam dunk and started winning in the writing game. iv This book is not a self-praise manifesto or a hero-worship material devoted to singing the praise of Don Jazzy, rather it’s meant to instruct, inspire, and make you draw lessons from the life, career, detours and bumps on the path of Don Jazzy’s journey to stardom and greatness.
