  • An Appraisal of the State of Professional Songwriting
AN APPRAISAL OF THE STATE OF PROFESSIONAL SONGWRITING ON THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.0 Introduction Nelson (2010), making reference to a Music quote by Henry Giles, mentioned that “A song will outlive all sermons in the memory”. “Every song is like a painting”, Dale (2013) and every picture tells a story. Also, “Great music is that which penetrates the ear with facility and leaves the memory with difficulty because Magical music never leaves the memory”, Beecham (2015). Songwriting may mean different things to different songwriters and at different times. Songwriting, like any other creative endeavor, can be meaningful in a variety of ways. So while there are some objective ways to determine “good” or “bad” when it comes to songwriting, it is also a creative space open to a myriad of options. “A Creative mind has the ability to make discoveries and create innovations”, Rivera, (2014). 1.1 Background to the Study The American Heritage Dictionary of English language, 5thEdition, (2013) defines a songwriter as one who writes lyrics or tunes (or both). They are often referred to as ballad makers, tunesmiths, composers - someone who writes the lyrics and usually the Music of Songs. To some extent a songwriter is much like a storyteller and the listeners are his captive audience. Most songs revolve around a central theme such as love, friendship, struggle, triumph, or other forms of experiences, etc. Every song tells a different story while each song usually contains an atom or 1 atoms of uniqueness which makes them differ from the works of other composers and songwriters.

C. ANYA-NJOKU (Ph.D) Department of Music University of Nigeria, Nsukka Email: [email protected] Abstract A research carried out at some Federal Government Colleges in the Enugu Education Zone of Nigeria (Anya-Njoku, 2014) affirmed that music education fell short of students’ expectations. Students’ exposure to music was limited and contents of lessons disparate from what they appreciate as music. Making bleak their hope and expectation of being functional and useful members of their society via the study of music. The teachers disclosed that western-oriented curriculum and their western-oriented training are major impediments to equipping Nigerian learners for careers in music. Through empirical processes to propose for the upgrading of the number and usage of indigenous instruments and repertoire in schools and colleges for better appreciation and application of musical knowledge and skills for the teachers, the learners, the profession and the society. • Perspectives from the United States and Canada
Towards Reforming the Legal Framework for Secured Transactions in Nigeria – Perspectives from the United States and Canada Doctoral Candidate: Iheme, Chima Williams Supervisor and Mentor: Professor Tibor TAJTI Doctoral Thesis Submitted to Central European University Legal Studies Department, International Business Law Stream In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the terminal degree of Doctor of Juridical Science in International Business Law CEU eTD Collection April 2016. Abstract This thesis rests on the presumption that ease of access to credit is the cornerstone of every country’s economic development, as no country may have any meaningful economic development if those willing to startup businesses or expand them, cannot obtain sufficient credit to do so. The sufficient availability of credit to business entities especially the small and medium scale entrepreneurs (SMEs) is interconnected with the nature of a country’s legal framework on secured transactions. A modern secured transactions law entails the use of personal property to secure credit, while an unreformed one – like Nigeria’s, amongst other shortcomings like lack of public notification system, focuses mainly on the use of real property as collateral. This is however a big problem and quite unsuitable for economic development because most SMEs and other forms of business organizations in Nigeria may not always have sufficient real property collateral to secure credit – and as a result, do not always meet up with credit requirements from banks and other lending institutions. A secured transactions law which allows for the use of personal property as collateral, provides comprehensive rules of creation, perfection, priority, as well as judicial and self-help enforcement channels, creates confidence in lending by ultimately ensuring predictability, which no doubt makes credits sufficiently available for entrepreneurs.

  • Issn: 2278-6236 the Music Artist As a Social Critic In
International Journal of Advanced Research in ISSN: 2278-6236 Management and Social Sciences Impact Factor: 6.943 THE MUSIC ARTIST AS A SOCIAL CRITIC IN NIGERIA’S CONTEMPORARY DEMOCRATIC EXPERIMENT: A STUDY OF SELECTED SONGS OF ADVISER NOWAMAGBE Barclays Foubiri AYAKOROMA, PhD, Executive Secretary/CEO, National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Abuja-FCT, Nigeria Abstract: Music, it is said, has a universal language. Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the late Afro Beat king, personified those that ardently criticised Nigerian leaders, especially the military. Songs like, “Zombie,” “V.I.P. (Vagabonds in Power),” “Unknown Soldier,” and “Beasts of No Nation,” lampooned the military mentality, likening them to robots that are remotely controlled. Sonny Okosun added his voice to the condemnation of the Apartheid regime in South Africa through his music. Tracks like “Fire in Soweto” and “Liberation,” were some of the pungent messages on the ills of Apartheid. This was just as his “Which Way Nigeria,” was a critical comment on the political direction of the Nigerian ship of state. In an era, where pop music has taken over the entertainment scene in Nigeria, and indeed the world, one thing that is worrisome is that most of the lyrics of songs have little or nothing to offer society, in the sense that they are just “all sound and no message for listeners”. But then, the approach of Adviser Nowamagbe, an Edo State born musician, is interesting. He has gradually become another Fela of this generation, in that he has made serious commentaries on the political leadership of, not just governors of Edo State, but also The Presidency.

QEH PRESS MEMBERS 2 QC 2012 EDITOR’S NOTE fter so many drafts that were written and torn almost immediately, I present to you, THE 2012 AEDITION OF THE QUEEN'S CONSULT MAGAZINE. To be sincere, producing this magazine was not an easy task, and I cannot begin to mention the disappointments I got, the sleepless nights that I spent typing, the puppy fights I had with the publisher, the disagreements I had with some members of my editorial board, and so many other militating factors. However, in the midst of all these, the Queen’s Consult is finally a success. In spite of all the odds, I chose to be like the proverbial postage stamp that sticks to one end until it gets to its destination. For this edition, I had a clear picture in mind. I wanted a magazine that anybody –male or female- can relate with its contents magazine, even though it is the publication of the press arm of a female hall of residence. More importantly, the Queen’s Consult 2012 is not only educative, but one that is also entertaining! To this end, every article in this edition is important, be it the ones on food, the jokes and the poems, the ones on relationships, and even the interviews.
