THISDAY ARISE Group will host a 6 - hour global commemoration from 5PM GMT to 11PM GMT to celebrate this milestone for Africa's premier nation. The event will include music from leading performers, fashion from top designers, speeches from icons, statesmen, global leaders as well as business and thought leaders, and an evening of fun, stories, art, and all that. AN APPRAISAL OF THE STATE OF PROFESSIONAL SONGWRITING ON THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.0 Introduction Nelson (2010), making reference to a Music quote by Henry Giles, mentioned that “A song will outlive all sermons in the memory”. “Every song is like a painting”, Dale (2013) and every picture tells a story. Also, “Great music is that which penetrates the ear with facility and leaves the memory with difficulty because Magical music never leaves the memory”, Beecham (2015). Songwriting may mean different things to different songwriters and at different times. Songwriting, like any other creative endeavor, can be meaningful in a variety of ways. So while there are some objective ways to determine “good” or “bad” when it comes to songwriting, it is also a creative space open to a myriad of options. “A Creative mind has the ability to make discoveries and create innovations”, Rivera, (2014). 1.1 Background to the Study The American Heritage Dictionary of English language, 5thEdition, (2013) defines a songwriter as one who writes lyrics or tunes (or both). They are often referred to as ballad makers, tunesmiths, composers - someone who writes the lyrics and usually the Music of Songs. To some extent a songwriter is much like a storyteller and the listeners are his captive audience. Most songs revolve around a central theme such as love, friendship, struggle, triumph, or other forms of experiences, etc. Every song tells a different story while each song usually contains an atom or 1 atoms of uniqueness which makes them differ from the works of other composers and songwriters.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the late Afro Beat king, personified those that ardently criticised Nigerian leaders, especially the military. Songs like, “Zombie,” “V.I.P. (Vagabonds in Power),” “Unknown Soldier,” and “Beasts of No Nation,” lampooned the military mentality, likening them to robots that are remotely controlled. Sonny Okosun added his voice to the condemnation of the Apartheid regime in South Africa through his music. Tracks like “Fire in Soweto” and “Liberation,” were some of the pungent messages on the ills of Apartheid. This was just as his “Which Way Nigeria,” was a critical comment on the political direction of the Nigerian ship of state. In an era, where pop music has taken over the entertainment scene in Nigeria, and indeed the world, one thing that is worrisome is that most of the lyrics of songs have little or nothing to offer society, in the sense that they are just “all sound and no message for listeners”. But then, the approach of Adviser Nowamagbe, an Edo State born musician, is interesting. He has gradually become another Fela of this generation, in that he has made serious commentaries on the political leadership of, not just governors of Edo State, but also The Presidency.

The scheme, tagged Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT), aims to create a safety net for poor Nigerians. At the time of the manifesto the naira traded at N168/$. Then, N5,000 was worth approximately $30. Now, at N492/$, the stipend is worth only $10, or 30 cents a day. Economic Think Tank Projects an Initial Naira Depreciation to N520/$ in 2017 before Recovery Financial Derivatives Company, one of Nigeria’s leading economic research think tanks, has projected an initial depreciation in the naira to N520/$ in the parallel market. In its report Ten Snapshots in One – 2017…From the Eyes of the Experts, they argue that low investor confidence and an inappropriately priced inter-bank exchange rate will drive down the value of the naira.
