The club, led by chairman Seb Rowe and manager Calum Sykes, proceeded through a campaign of friendly fixtures, with the club's first ever non-competitive match against Stalybridge Celtic on 12th July 2014 at Stockport Sports Village. Despite losing 5-0, the club had begun its journey. Nicknamed The Lions, the club competed throughout the 2014/15 season against senior and reserve teams from many different clubs including; FC United of Manchester, Ramsbottom United, Fleetwood Town U21's and Norwegian outfit, Rolvsøy IF. The Lions endured a successful first-ever campaign competing in 35 fixtures home and away ending with statistics of Won: 17, Draw: 8, Lost: 10. The club also completed a 13-match unbeaten run in the middle of the campaign between July and October, including nine victories. In May 2015 the club was accepted into Step 6 of the Non-League Pyramid and joined Division One of the North West Counties Football League. The club's first ever competitive fixture came on Saturday 8th August 2015 away at Hanley Town, a match in which Stockport were victorious 3-2. On 15th August 2015 the team secured a 2-2 draw against Widnes in front of a then-record crowd of 78 in their first ever competitve match at Stockport Sports Village. Stockport competed in three competitions in their first ever league season including the NWCFL, League Challenge Cup and Cheshire Senior Cup. The club progressed to the semi-finals of the League Challenge Cup before a 3-1 defeat to Barnton at SSV, meanwhile Hyde United knocked Town out of the Cheshire Senior Cup in the Preliminary Round. As the season came to a close Stockport secured a play-off spot in the NWCFL First Division with a match to spare. Town came up against Bacup Borough in the play-off semi-final at SSV but were defeated 2-0 as Bacup progressed into the 2015 First Division play-off final, where they were defeated by Barnton. The second competitive season for the club didn't go quite so well. Full of optimism in August, and favoured by many to win the league, the Lions got off to a slow start, gaining just six points from six matches, and were languishing in mid-table when Calum Sykes resigned as manager a week prior to Christmas 2016. With the previous manager went 9 players, all following to New Mills. In the interim period before the board were able to appoint a new manager, the team suffered its biggest defeat, a 10-0 crushing at the hands of City of Liverpool. The game did set another record, a gate of 196, a club record for a league match. In January 2017 the club appointed Dave Wild as manager, alongside assistant Phil Carratt. After the duo joined, player recruitment improved and results followed suit. In what was his first managerial job, Wild led the team to a 10th place finish which included the club’s longest unbeaten run of 12 games. Wild and Carratt's talents did not go unnoticed, and they were enticed to Northern Premier League side Mossley in March 2018, with Under-21s boss Jake Davies taking over as interim manager until the end of the 2017/18 season. He steered the team to another 10th place finish in the league table, and also led them to the biggest game in the club's history. After defeating Cammell Laird, Hyde United and Winsford United, they reached the final of the Cheshire Senior Cup, where they succumbed 0-3 to Nantwich Town at the Millbank Stadium, home of Runcorn Linnets. In an exciting summer of 2018, Town introduced a new club badge and also forged closer links with National League North neighbours Stockport County. The Lions will continue to loan young players from County, who trust Town with their development. Former County manager Alan Lord was appointed to combine his role as Director of Youth Development at Edgeley Park with being the head of Town's new management team, further strengthening the bond between the two clubs. They played in that league (renamed the Cheshire Association Football League in 2007) until 2014, and at that time were one of only two clubs to have been in the league throughout its 66-year history, the other being Knutsford. Barnton won the league on eleven occasions, including seven consecutive league titles between 1996–97 and 2002–03. The pinnacle of the club’s success came with winning the National League Systems Cup while representing the Mid-Cheshire League in the inaugural competition of 2003–04. They beat West Cheshire, Liverpool Combination and South Western League opposition along the way before defeating the Cambridgeshire County League 2–0 on their home soil in the final. As a result of this they went on to represent England in the UEFA Regions Cup in Slovenia and Bosnia where they won four, drew one and lost one of their games, narrowly failing to reach the final stages of the competition. The club also participated in the FA Cup on two occasions (1948–49 and 1949–50) and the FA Vase in 1985–86, although they failed to progress further than the extra preliminary round on each occasion. The club submitted an application to join the North West Counties Football League for the start of the 2014–15 season. They were successful in their application and their place in the newly formed Division One was confirmed on 29 May. A few days later, Andy Burgess was appointed as the club’s new manager, with Ian Ross stepping down to concentrate on his role as chairman. However, Burgess left the club by mutual consent in November and forward Colin Quirk was placed in temporary charge. Within a week Allan Glover was appointed as the new manager, but he was succeeded by Leon Knight in March 2015. The club finished seventh in their inaugural season in the North West Counties Football League, just outside the Division One Play-Off places. During Barnton’s second season in the First Division, the club accepted Leon Knight’s resignation as manager in early March, and appointed Danny Meadowcroft as interim manager until the end of the season.
