CHAPTER I

HISTORY

HOWEVER uncertain and dim our outlook upon English History h as been (and in as many c es still is) , it is true of most of us that somewhere about the beginning of the sixteenth century the view seems as to be coming more into focus , it were us i persons appear real to , even fam liar ; events assume a logical sequence ; even s of date , a few them , stick in the memory . all li At events , the reign of E zabeth is of li a region ght after much Plantagenet , - and pre Plantagenet , obscurity . We hav e read that the Elizabethan days were of e lan ex an days wide mov ment , j ubi t p sion , and , what is more , we understand hi so that these t ngs were . We know for ourselves what happened between 1558 and 1603 ; what happened before t hat epoch we have been told , times a s without number , and have often forgotten . 2 RUGBY SCHOOL

And if the sixteenth century puts ai ull uncom re cert nty in the place of d , p di hen ng acceptance in the average mind , Still more is there reason for every Rug beian to feel that here at last he is standing ” r on firm g ound . For every schoolboy , though he may lack that odd piece of knowledge with which Lord Macaulay once credited him , at least knows (if he be a Sh eriffe Rugbeian) that Lawrence , or f Sh erife Sherri f, or (and some other varia of tions , for he had no more notion writing his own name consistently than had Shakespeare) founded Rugby School in 1 567 .

As a fact he did not at any rate , not in any sense in wh ich we talk now of Rugby

School . What he did , and how the seed - wn— has developed into the full blo no , not , - w — so we hope , yet quite full blo n plant , l of - w ll fu l life and vigour to day , it i be necessary to trace out as briefly as may be . ’ likewise wrop in myst ry but a man wh o was in 154 1 made a Freeman of ’ the Grocers Company and wh o quite 1567 certainly died in September , (for the New Parish Register of Christ Church , so gate Street , says , and takes occasion ' to spell him after yet another fashion , Sh yryffe can hardly have been born of much after the accession Henry VIII .

Grocer he certainly was , and so far proud of it as to take as his own a part of the ’ of arms the Grocers Company , and to add ’

thereto , by way of crest , a lion s paw, or erased , , holding a bunch of dates , the r of f uit the first in the pods argent , the a A st lks and leaves proper . modern humorist has conj ectured that he w a s the first of his trade to discover that sand might profitably be admixed with sugar but this is to cast aspersions on the character of one whose sole appearance ’ in History is in the pages of Foxe s B ook o Ma rt rs f y , where he stands as an out ’ spoken loyalist (had he not the Queen s letters patent as her Purveyor of Spices not afraid to correct sharply and in public

i its will and testament we have , w th l i 1909 inestimab e cod cil , and in an artist w as found imaginative enough to con j ecture his personal appearance from this meagre record of h is career where fore he now stands , and long may he stand , in stained glass , unpretentious , unremark able , soberly gowned , over against the mightiest shaper of his growing School , looking down on its six hundred members gathered in the latest and (internally) ’ l the best of Rugby s secu ar buildings . So every all Sunday , at least , and on high days is heard , in a Chapel which he never of of dreamed , the prayer the School congregation not unmindful of the good intent of our religious Founder . Like many another charitable bequest , his good intent h as developed beyond his L t ken . e us see what were the means by which he well and truly laid the foundations . His Almshouses do not here concern HISTORY 5

us ; but hard by these he directs that there should be ‘ built a fai r and con ” v enient a n School House , in which

honest , discreet , and learned man was to teach grammar and generally preside of Sh eriffe over the Free School Lawrence , of London , Grocer , to serve chiefly for the children of Rugby and Brown ” sov er A al 12 . s ary of £ per annum , w together ith free lodging , was thought sufficient to secure the proper quantity of honesty , discretion , and learning . TWO Trustees were appointed , and to them the will consigned the Mansion

House and certain land in Rugby , more land and a house at , and a 1 legacy of 00for general school purposes .

So ran the original will , but by the most of fortunate inspirations , he wrote a nl h is Codicil , o y a few weeks before substitu death , revoking the legacy , and for of ting it the third part a field , called

Conduit Close , near London . Few fields can have done so much good to so many people with their third part for houses

- crowd thick upon it to day , and though rent a ers Fashion has moved the large . p y thence , it still brings in an income of something over a year .

w as Thus sown the seed , but the soil w as . unkindly , and the seasons adverse Not for seven years was the building nor di done , the first honest , screet , and learned Master appointed . By 1580 he w a s f no longer in o fice , and his successor w as so far from honest , whatever his di scretion and learning , as to incur , and of l probably to deserve , the wrath a loca one magnate , possibly of the Governors or or Trustees who , with without authority , made a forcible entry into the School of Rugby and from thence removed with strong hand and displaced

Richard Seale .

Litigation prolonged and . tortuous ’ marked the first century of the School s history . We cannot here detail the ul pec ations of Trustees , the dishonest attempts by various interested persons to misappropriate the revenues both of n the London and Brow sover properties , al to the appe s Chancery , or the j udgments f or o Commissions . Somehow other the

School survived the Civil Wars , and in 1667 of November , , the centenary the Foundation w as happily marked by a l of K fina decision the Lord eeper , by which the avaricious litigants were HISTORY 7

finally routed and the various properties were henceforward confined to the uses h ff contemplated by Lawrence S eri e . Throughout this period the changes in the Headmastership had been fairly f frequent , nine men having held o fice Old Kni h tle before the first Rugbeian , g y 1 670. Harrison , whose reign began in But it wa s not till 1687 that one can detect any real symptoms of the growth of the School to its nineteenth century dimen sions . In that year Henry Holyoake , ll Fe ow of Magdalen , was appointed , and remained at the School House for forty three years . No School lists survive from those days , but the Register , begun 1675 al 630 in , shows a tot entry of boys under h is rule ; and the Statisticians calculate that this represents an average strength of 90 or more in the School at one time , of whom hardly more than a quarter were the children of Rugby and n Brow sover , and other places thereunto ’ For wa s adj oining . Holyoake s fame l abroad in the and , and the great maj ority of the School now voyaged to Rugby in a stage coach from afar , much as did Tom

Brown at a later date . Mr . Bradby quotes two or three charming letters of 8 RUGBY SCHOOL

’ l Holyoake s , which clear y prove the ’ Headmaster s personal knowledge of his f boys , and reveal an a fectionate interest in themselves and their doings which are not generally considered characteristic of old of m the type Do inie . ’ Old Holyoake s successor , an Rugbeian , one h li l Jo n Plomer , seems to have had tt e other qualification for the post and the i public apparently discovered th s , and l sent their sons elsewhere . The scho astic of s Crosfield reputation Thoma , who l him fol owed , once more brought up the numbers betw een the years 1742 and 1 1748 744 . In a move into larger and more weather-proof quarters w a s made ll necessary , and was successfu y achieved il ll Kna . by Wi iam , the then Headmaster The new site caused much discussion ; the fir st idea w as to build close to the old house (it was too far gone for repair) on f the north side o the present Market Place . But fortunately Kh ail moved right up the High Street into the Manor House , which w a s to serve as the School House 1816 l until , when the present bui dings of O ld Quad were completed , and where there was scope for fresh building and the

- successive additions to the School Close .

In his fifth year there came to the School Abercomb of Ralph y , the great general

Aboukir and Alexandria . Kna il 1751 is died in , and there little need to write much of the two or three immediate successors , who increased neither the fame nor the numbers of the

School . It is more profitable to look 1778 ahead to the year , when Thomas

James began his splendid reign . James ” of Ru be the First , as a later generation g w ians , brought up under the ise hand of ’ the present President of St . John s ll O ll l Co ege , xford , natura y ca ls him , was l a great man , or at least a great schoo influence uncon master , whose is still sciously felt by every present Rugbeian as he reluctantly dresses for first Lesson

7 a . m or ll at . , as j oyfu y prepares for l ” Tuesday afternoon ha f, and reflects that not at all schools do they have three l — regular ha f holidays a week . For it was ' K ’ Thomas James , bred at Eton and ing s , wh o inaugurated the Time Table still surviving in many details , and the system of holidays , from which later Headmasters one have not taken away j ot , but indeed have added thereto a not infrequent l fourth ho iday of a Monday afternoon . But the mystery of Middle Week 10 RUGBY SCHOOL

Mondays will be explained in its due place 1 ; and even Middle Weeks may be darkened for the erring or the mis understood by another and baleful though withal serviceable , invention of James ’ ” — O the First s , Imposition Paper . n this alone may be written out the work for ” which a boy has been floored ; and as it is issued only by Housemasters , and must subsequently be Signed by a member of the VI as completed before l -u ocking p time , there is no secrecy about ul his failure , to comfort the so of the f all victim ; his o fence is known to , and is probably recorded on a House List by his Housemaster . As he impatiently scribbles away in his den , let him reflect that to James , too , he owes the study-system which gives him a strong of own one hold and retreat his , with but other , at most , to share it . But the VI in those days were far from the trusted mentors of modern times . — one That great change the thing which , ’ l above all else , is Arnold s egacy to his own and almost all other Public Schools hi had as yet occurred to none . HISTORY 1 1 more must be said of that change presently; here it may only be noted that the VI under all predecessors of Arnold seem to have had a certain liberty allowed them -if it were not j uster to call it licence vvith ou t any responsibility . It is true that responsibility may cause a boy ’ s head to wag somewhat ponderously for a year or two but presently the young shoulders grow broad enough to bear the elderly head comfortably ; and meanwhile the owner has learned young what some men l all never earn at . No doubt the ingenious unruliness of Walter Savage Landor exceeded the average of his contemporaries (let us recall that Henry Francis Cary belongs to the same term , and Samuel Butler , of Shrewsbury) ; but James had to face much that the least well-disciplined school of to-day would regard as rank hi insubordination . Of poac ng and break of l ing bounds , revel ings that reached the of verge drunkenness , there is evidence enough ; but standards were different di l then , and James knew what scip ine meant ; and even if he aimed at incul ea tin l g it by appea s to reason , he had no namby-pa mby aversion from the drastic use Of rod l the upon occasion . the authority given to assistant masters now for using the cane (with several wise circumscriptic ns) is another legacy from of k his time , a ind not found in all schools . I ts value is disputable , perhaps but there for is much to be said it . Most of us have

been beaten in our time , and are honestly l gratefu for the same . At all events , the beautiful monument in Chapel is a worthy

memorial (belauded , too , of the experts) of the Headmaster who began the new era of the School and fittingly enough is his portrait the first of the series that now fills the famous Headmaster ’ s Window

in the Upper Bench School . His resigna tion in 1794 w a s that Of a man who had wrecked his health for the work he loved

and honoured . w a s un His successor , Henry Ingles , h e fortunate . The good did has , to the of eye research , apparently been interred with his bones while the evil that he did lives after him ; for wh o has not heard — of the Great Rebellion Which sonorous title , be it said , cloaks an ignominious enough business a rebellion that is scattered by alien horsewhips is not much more credit to the revolution aries than to the wisdom of the Headmaster

Astley convened his cronies , and wild all schemes were hatched . Not the gun powder w as consumed in the interrupted ’ of h is battery Housemaster s windows , apparently at all events , explosives were ’ found to blow the Headmaster s door from All its hinges . School windows were all systematic y smashed , and convenient ni fur ture soon provided a glorious bonfire , on not whose top was burned , the Doctor m l hi se f , fortunately , but the greater part of l his ibrary . Upon this ecstatic scene r the once d eaded Tiger dared not appear . But Rugby was full of folk that day his and from locked study Dr . Ingles stealthily sent for a recruiting party of di l n sol ers , then odging in the tow , and a f - di number o horse drovers . The sol ers dramatically guarded the study with fixed bayonets ; but it was the advancing horsewhips that drove the insurgents to En their stronghold on the Island . c l s onced there , they istened across its moat , as probably no schoolboys before i or s nce , to the reading Of the Riot Act f by a Justice o the Peace . Meanwhile the soldiers took them basely in the rear , ri wading the moat , and making p soner the whole host . No further resistance was HISTORY 15

was possible , even if anyone anxious to n s conti ue o disastrous a farce . The Black Tiger added greatly to his reputa flo er wh o tion as a gg that day , and those were not thrashed rej oined their parents l by the first possible coach , summari y expelled .

So Dr . Ingles weathered the storm , and one can only regret never having person f ally met any survivor of that Odd a fair . The recollections of an Old Boy ever ul w as incline to the mirac ous , and here m Homeric matter for re iniscence . More of al than one OR . pictori imagination occurs to the mind as a worthy narrator So- -so of those doings . If only and had been there ! what generations of us unenterprising modem s would have hung on a s of gaping his words , he told bloody affrays with Redcoats and Horse-dealers Ah they were giants in those days 1 sa w Six or seven years later Dr . Ingles other troops manoeuvring in the Close . Invasion w a s in the air (it was French at of that time) , and the wave patriotism l Tw o ro led its ripple into the School . ani comp es of volunteers were formed , armed with wooden broadswords , who drilled assiduously and fought in good 16 RUGBY SCHOOL

n w as f ear est . That before the days o ul 176 Manoeuvre Reg ations , paragraph , with its milk-and-water rules about fifty yards distance between Opposing forces ;

those two companies met hand to hand , and desisted not until there was many a bloody coxcomb between the Barby

and Dunchurch Roads . Parents may — have complained they do , sometimes or perhaps Trafalgar was the cause ! but the spurt of national defence flickered

out , not to flare up again until Crimean

days .

Samuel Butler wanted to succeed Ingles , Wooll but the Trustees preferred Thomas , whose learning w a s his least title to a post hi unfitted for w ch he was by no means . SO Butler w as free to do great work for 1806 1828 Shrewsbury , and from to Rugby had a good man in Wooll to make ready for the great fourteen years of l n Arno d . His mai work was to build adequate accommodation for the School . For six years he watched and guided that gradual transformation through what must have been great inconveniences , as one part after another of the old l n i rm bui di gs was demol shed , and Fo s migrated from place to place . Surely HISTORY 17 it wa s a fine instinct that stirred Wooll to build widely enough for the coming epoch Of expansion . As the yet hornless stag-beetle prepares him a winter-home large enough to contain the horns that ll so sha presently sprout , with a wise prevision Wooll made a group of buildings adequate to the needs of many later f generations o boys . Expert Opinions are divided about the intrinsic merits Of Old w e hi the Buildings , as now t nk of ’ H a kewill s them . But architecture met w a s the case ; it unpretentious , and it was solid and he is fortunate in having less happy architects to succeed him . No Rugbeian can look at the School House O from Big Side , nor pass through ld f Quad , without an a fectionate pride in - those squat , castellated yellow white n buildings , surmou ted with a not ungrace ful clock-tower but no human being can pass from the unassuming sturdiness of Old Quad into the glaring zebra-patterns of

New Quad without something Of a wince . ’ Peace to H akewill s ashes ; would that he had lived t o plan the Tercentenary additions . There w as a good deal of money for ’ Wooll s l rebui ding schemes . The Trustees , 18 RUGBY SCHOOL

Dr a ccumu says . Rouse , had some lated in their hands and the same writer ingeniously traces the increasing annual expenditure on the new plans from the surviving records of the sums paid each All year for fire insurance . the time the School revenues h a d been growing ; especially wa s this the work of that of blessed third part a field near London , ’ all c ed Conduit s Close , Whose yearly value had increased from £8 in 1600 to 1 l over in 800. When the bui dings 1816 were finished in , it was time to secure -fields more playing . That year the various component parts of the present l School Close (exc usive of New Big Side , 1850 1864 added partly in and , but ulbum 1 4 mainly by Dr . Go in 85 ) were unified into a whole , with the result that the Close to -day does not lag much behind Winchester ’ s Meads as a fair N l W oll or a l . o prospect . was that , for Dr l at once proceeded with the new Chape , and H a kewill had . completed this by 1 2 1 8 1 . 828 Thus , at his resignation in , Wooll left behind a great memorial of his — work practically a ll that forms the Old School House and Quad , though later superstructures with ill -advised

20 RUGBY SCHOOL of n the u initiated . Surely they should detect the weary shuffle of feet as they of own perorate your great Arnold .

Mistake us not , good preachers . We are nOt of w e weary Arnold , and respect your worthy selves ; but leave him for those w h o know to tell us of h im . A passing i him un nformed reference to , as sauce to us your sermon , is an offence to , and deafs our ears to much else that you sa have to y to us , charm you never so wisely . We know enough of him as a teacher to realize what h is advent meant to the

- Sixth Form . He was in all respects a in literary man . A scholar , the Old n w as not sense , he certai ly , though s h is Th ne primarily o . The issue of y dides w a s no revolution in scholarship , but it w a s a new thing in the historical w a s study of the classics . For he an enthusiastic historian , for ever drawing parallels and instruction from the past for for the present ; and , further , ever illuminating the past by illustration from al the present . Classic editions , most of ! them , have their day , and pass ’ Arnold s Thucydides may have passed from all libraries whose owners had no HISTORY 2 1

Rugbeian forbears but h is Second P unic Wa r remains a classic to which

innumerable readers are grateful. After much heavy study of Roman History text i on books , what a rel ef it was to light that enthralling tale ! And all through it was the same ! he had a passion for literature— viewed through History or

- Geography , Classics or Essay writing

which he communicated to his Sixth . ’ Into Thomas James framework of Studies

he breathed this new informing spirit . The School motto reads Ora ndo L a bor a ndo . It is easy to talk nonsense about

it , and dangerous , at least , to try to O write sense . ne does not argue about

mottoes . But Arnold lived it . The of public , some them , cried out against the revolutionary Headmaster for an un- Christian , even irreligious , perverter of youth . Arnold heeded them not , and the whole Rugbeian community believed ’ O Goulbum s in him . ne gathers that strong Church teaching made more per ’ sonal impression on his boys than Arnold s ’ but of Arnold s intense religious feeling none could doubt who had a chance to l see . It caught hold of the best e ements in the School .

Educator and religious teacher , then ; l l but the ta e is stil untold , or rather l . scarcely begun The Arno d Tradition , l right y viewed , has one element greater l than this . It is the principle of interna hi autonomy which he devised , and w ch l every other Schoo adopted from Rugby . His practice w a s to trust the Sixth to the last possible limit to concede them most of their old liberties and privileges , but to demand in exchange a high measure of public service for the good of the school . Trust your Prepostors , support ’ them to the full extent of a Hea dma ster s power ; if they fail you , discard them ; NO if they betray you , break them . man h as more boldly and unflinch ingly acted on Of al the principle sacrificing the individu , if need be , to the community . Even if a boy were only useless— not actively harmful , he had better go quietly ; and , if harmful , go he must , swiftly . There are educational pundits abroad in the land to-day wh o prate of the wickedness of ruining the individual career . Conceive their theories applied to an Army ; to a or ! Government , a Church How , then , l so to a Schoo , whose discipline , if not visually conspicuous nor so rigid as an HISTORY 23

’ not Army s , must be much less constrain ing upon its members ! Yet that vivid Of of spirit the Indian Mutiny , Hodson , ’ H odson s for all Horse , his madcap feats , survived the discipline of the Master who could distinguish wildness from s badne s . 50 Arnold required his Prepostors to ul r e the School with him . Every boy who reached the Sixth was thereby become a of Prepostor . Clearly some them would be unsuitable to rule a society which must have a strong bias towards the A ’ theory of might is right . But rnold s unswerving belief w as in the general union of moral and intellectual excel l lence . The unsuitab e were strength

ened by the ordeal of authority , as they are tod ay ; and the ordeal may for a i time be a fiery one . Th s is not the place

to argue the whole system . There are great Schools which have other systems of appointing Prefects and they thrive ’ thereon . The Rugby system is Arnold s

system , and is of the blood and bone of - and fibre her constitution to day . to There are checks it , and supplements but the principle is in all main points

of into discussion the whole theory , and its influence upon the School and upon the Sixth themselves . Prigs , said O xford and the public , when first the Arnold Sixth congregated at the Univer i O s ty . xford was correct in its mono were syllabic criticism . They prigs read Ru b Ma az ine the g y g of his date , and l ou not you wil marvel , if y do profanely i curse , at the wiseacre hom lies written by Sixth Form boys and their successors have sometimes burst into print in no very different key even in the twentieth century ; yet some of these anonymous of contributions were from the pen Clough ,

Vaughan , Stanley , and , a s the pencilled initials Show in the margin ’ of an old volume in the present writer s for . a possession Indeed they were prigs , time, they and their successors . Let the critic only consider whether a prig may not do well for a body politic which he to helps rule , and whether there is not , neces perhaps , in more cases than not , a sary stage of priggishness in the evolution of what the British race is fond of thinking one of to be its best assets , the educated , responsible man of public spirit . I F anyone has for private reasons read the previous chapter he will have noticed scattered references to the Buildings which make up the outward and visible home of the School life . Here it is pro ’ posed to take a coup d ceil of the existing to mass of buildings , and trace briefly their origin and evolution . The photo graphs of them perhaps flatter one or other but that is no matter , if the reader does not know Rugby from within and if he does , then he can only see through f the eyes of habit and old a fection , to whose vision the crudest outlines a re softened and the harshest colours fall into harmony . For indeed the architecture of the School al has not been happy . We have ready al O sa tisfa c w ked through ld Quad , with tion , only to be unpleasantly arrested by its O flamboyant neighbour . But ld Quad l Old itse f has not been spared . The 32

Old Big School on the West had its own nl roof free to the skies , and it was o y in Tait ’ s time that the Arnold Library and Lower Bench School of to -day made two of or floors the North , Town , side . As ou ou y look up High Street , indeed , y see ’ H akewill s Gate and Tower much a s it - originally stood . The big oriel window fronting you on the first floor is the ’ ” Headmaster s Window (p . the chief of w a s L feature what once the ibrary , but has for long been the Upper Bench School . Probably no modern scientific inspector would pass it as adequate for the instruc tion of youth but no one who h as ever sa t on those narrow seats fixed round the ll on wa , and rubbed his coat to a polish the old deeply-carved table tops of former ll generations , that serve it for pane ing , could endure to have it other than it is . Scientific inspection cannot weigh im palpable association or subtle suggestion and cubic feet of air are neither the chief 34 RUGBY SCHOOL nor the most permanent element in O l education . ne change on y many — Rugbeians would wish to see the restora ’ tion to its ancient place of Arnold s chair and table , that now stand , most happily on inscribed in Latin , the stairs of the

Art Museum . Beneath it is the main entrance to O ld Quad . The remainder of the ground floor on this side is made up of two Schools (there are neither Class-rooms di - nor , in the strict i om , Form rooms of hi at Rugby) , one w ch is not unreason ably styled The Black Hole , and the ’ f Marshal s O fice . In this latter is trans acted an incredible variety of business O and the Marshal , ever since ld Patey Goulbum was first appointed by , is a functionary whose duties are of very great moment to the School . The present ’ holder , Patey s successor , has discharged them loyally for some twenty years , but for Patey worked more than forty , after his retirement still giv ing help in busy ” times . Porter , they call such a man at some Schools but he is more perhaps the celebrated obiter dictum of an inter ested party in a recent small case in the Assizes was not far from the mark

36 RUGBY SCHOOL the South side flank a series of schools stretching from the School House H all O ll 190 to New Quad . ne of these was ti 7 used as a most inadequate Armoury for the Rifle Corps , and at no time can have been even a respectable lodging for any o now F rrn over a dozen in number . It is ’ ll as a solitude , and they ca it the M ters O m . Roo ver these arches , making the whole South side roughly on a level with of the main tower , runs a storey studies - and above them bath rooms . The latter have very evil windows amazingly out of keeping with the whole scheme of architecture around them ; it is difficult to guess how these crept in when the bath-rooms were built only a dozen years or so back . Access to the School House Hall is gained from outside by a large arch , i l correspond ng to the main Schoo Gate , but only the privileged few— VI and other — ’ eminent persons have the entr ee the plebs must enter by a meaner door within . The plain oak of Hall serves its purpose all of 1816 well , and like the building has an appearance of immemorial antiquity much in excess of its years . To follow the ramifications of School

House passages is not for the occasional so visitor , intricate and tortuous do they appear to all but their proper inhabitants . l all A ong them are the studies , such as the Houses have , though the School House dens (the Old Rugby word) are ll sma er than nearly all the others but , whereas the average Rugbeian must share a study for some three years with another boy (however often the pair may be al tered) , the School House has enough studies to give a single to most boys on after e year . And the School House has set the type to more recent Houses in this and many other matters . As you step down through the Cloisters that run between Old Big School and ou the Schools south of it , y pass a Notice Board devoted to the announcements of various School Societies , of which more will be said presently . You reach New ou O ll Quad , and if y are an xonian wi at once think of Keble College ; for both are the handiwork of Butterfield . But K l l l whereas eb e , ike Rugby Chapel , wou d certainly be a fine mass of buildings if one might obliterate the Italian of l streaks co ouring , yet New Quad could never be an impressive group . of - ll of O side it is the side wa ld Big , ’ l H a kewill s bui t of yellowish bricks , which l also form a bit of the North wa l . And then with a start , and no attempt at ’ Butterfield s blending , come striped l i a . s anom ies It , perhaps , better to refrain the pen , and refer the reader to the photograph Opposite , whose colours are al less ugly than the origin . But these many additional Schools could not be spared , and the Tercentenary Funds by their erection supplied a want that had grown urgent . To to cross New Quad , from South North , or to directly from East West , is not per mitted to any but Masters and visitors . The Masters ’ Path ” is the recognised informal meeting -place before and after on - - Chapel , and whole school days between fourth and fifth lessons for all Masters O located in ld or New Quad . There will always be contention about the outside appearance of Chapel , which rm of fo s the whole South side New Quad . ’ Butterfield s Its colours are , but so are its height and proportion . At the inside ll architecture no wise man wi cavil , whatever he thinks of the outside . A champion of B utterfield might argue

Beneath them are small windows lighting of a ll one the new aisles and these , but 42 RUGBY SCHOOL on or the South side , have in the last ten twelve years been filled with stained glass f by di ferent donors . Both the transepts have large memorial windows that are too violent in colour for their surroundings . Particularly is this so in the South “ Goulbum transept , where the beautiful 1898 window , inserted in , is at most times Of the day sadly killed by its brilliant neighbours The work is in the charac isticall f K ter o . . y quiet colours C E empe , O R , and represents Christ blessing little i ch ldren . It has replaced an older window on the same subj ect which was becoming O seriously faded . nce again , late after noon is the time to see this window , for l a westering sun lights it up finely , whi e to of denying its aid those the South wall , and one may see the full beauty and dignity of the design . Three other windows demand separate notice . The Adoration of the Magi is the subj ect of the East window , which w a s brought from Aerschot , near Louvain , to by Dr . Arnold , and presented Chapel 1834 by the Masters in . The writer has been told that a replica of it exists in one of O the churches at Shrewsbury . n the South Chancel wall there was till a few

Its merits were at no time 1905 great , and when it was replaced in , its colours had begun to blur and coalesce in a manner quite ludicrous . Its successor is part of the South African War Me al mori , and an inscription below records the names of twenty-six Old Rugbeians wh o ll 1 99 - 1 2 fe in the war from 8 90 . By general consent the most beautiful of the older windows is that on the South wall nearest to the Chancel . It came from 1839 Rouen in , and is ascribed to the

sixteenth century . Whether the received “ title , The Presentation in the Temple , n is correct , Mr . Bradby has show good reason to doubt .

Rugby poet is W . S . Landor , but there is naturally a delicacy about commemora ting one wh o w as forcibly expelled from l . O the School University Co lege at xford , it is true , both sent down Shelley and subsequently built a distressing (as many think) monument to h is memory . It may be a different matter with Landor , though he seems to have owed more to O Rugby than Shelley to xford . Two other reliefs should be noticed in Chapel . Against the South door is a beautiful medallion of Archbishop Benson morte non ta m subita qua m opp ortuna obdor mivit and near the pulpit one of Arch w as bishop Temple , not as he in Rugby days (the bust in the Museum shows that) , nor quite as the present generation can remember him , Archbishop , and Chair f man O the Governing Body . Very many ri al memo tablets line both Chancel walls , full of names that were of honour and repute at Rugby , and not without fame in Church , State , or the Services , after

For years the organ has had a reputa tion as one of the best instruments in dl 1872 the Mi ands . It dates from , but used to be played from a keyboard on the

floor of Chapel , far from all its pipes . In 1897 it w a s moved to its present 19 10 gallery on the North side , and in it has been completed by the addition of was many new stops . Its original cost and almost as much more has been on spent its completion . It is now an exceedingly powerful instrument Of much l beauty , though its fu l power requires a larger building than Chapel to give it proper scope . We will leave the Chapel by the Masters ’ door under the organ loft , and turn to the right (past the drinking- tap much affected by Middle School boys in their interval between second and third lessons) , into the Close , the most distinctive feature of S the School . Its whole North ide is bordered by School Buildings , first the old Chapel , then the Schools , the School House (including the Headmaster ’ s House) 46 RUGBY SCHOOL

’ and the Doctor s Wall , which bounds the School House Garden . Access to the Headmaster ’ s study is gained by a wind ing turret stair leading down to the — ’ Close ; over the box hedge on the Doctor s Wall are annually read out the awards of School Exhibitions at the end of the of Summer Term . The stretch gravel in front of the School Buildings has long been the parade ground of the Rifle Corps , about which more will be found on a one later page (p . From it sees the v whole se enteen acres of the Close , though the j udicious seeker after views will go to the far end , and look back to the School . Elm trees allow as much of the Chapel to is be seen as desirable , and if the season be Autumn , the Virginia creeper makes a beautiful addition to the old buildings . The unsuspecting visitor will admire the great Hall window of the School House , but he Should know that it is something Of not a fraud , inasmuch as it does form of one the window storey , as it appears of from the outside to do , but two . The Webb Ellis tablet in the Doctor ’ s Wall will be found explained in the chapter on (p . of ll The trees the Close are sti its glory ,

48 RUGBY SCHOOL many pieces of furniture to Rugbeians as the True Cross furnished relics to pious persons of the Middle Ages . ’ Old Big Side is only half of the Close s northern end ; between it and the high road lie , first , Chapel Piece , and then Pontines ” (a name once due to its marshy nature , but long since undeserved) . These two supply fiery pitches to j unior of games cricket , and together make an on excellent reserve football ground , which most of the important games of O the Lent Term are played , while ld Big Side recuperates for a heavy season f - o cricket . At its South East corner a thick knot of trees crowns the famous ” sa w li Island , which , as we in Rebel on ’ l days and up to the Forties , real y earned O ll the name . n it sti stand a few gaunt of old- remains time gymnastic apparatus , but no trace is seen of the gardens which once unwilling fags were forced by the VI to till into some order and gaiety in time for Speech Day . At its foot stands O il the ld Pav ion , an entirely unpretentious ll of building , storied with the ro past ’ XI S School , nowadays chiefly the place where the XI and XXII keep their

Piece , Cross Piece I and II , and so on As w e follow the path southward from O the ld Pav . we leave on the left a of structure no beauty , the Town Room , which forms a rallying point for home boarders and others wh o have not yet passed from a Small House into their ultimate Boarding Houses . The Old Cricket Shed was removed some twelve years ago to give Space for fives courts but room has been found recently for an eighteen yards Miniature Rifle Range in an Odd corner of the ground . A path runs westward from the New Racquet Court behind the row of trees f always briefly spoken o as The Limes . il It leads to the New Pav ion , which has S no architectural ambitions , and O to the m fine i Gy nasium . The Tower cannot be c led h l beautiful , nor the elaborate facade , w i st the back end , only visible from far up the Barby Road , is undeniably an eyesore . But about the excellence of the l interior there can scarce y be two opinions . Its size is far greater than could be guessed di l from outside , and the vision of the bui d a s ing , it were , into the three sections of 52 RUGBY SCHOOL

i al Choir , Auditorium , and ra sed G leries , makes the whole look much squarer than w its actual dimensions allow . The organ , which migrated from 1886 the New Big School , still awaits an an adequate casing , but is in itself admirable instrument The tiers of Choir seats are vastly more comfortable than those across the road , and the platform has room for a large orchestra . Regular observations of double stars have been here taken for years . The last building to notice is the Physical Laboratory on the Hillmorton n of Road , squatting u der the shadow the w a s a s new Speech Room . It built a 1894 temporary abode for scientists in , and being largely of corrugated iron has been long known as the Tin Tabernacle . It is much to be hoped that it may one day be replaced by a more sightly build i ing . Meanwh le its serviceable tin and wood shelter the Library , Museum , and Lecture Room of the Natural History of Society , as well as a number contending musicians who practise their instruments in a number of contiguous cells less sound proof than they are meant to be . As Rugby was the first great public School to establish science in its normal curri culum (under Dr . Temple) , this is not a ui n very worthy b ldi g . THE interests that make up the life of a schoolboy of this century are extremely various , and by no means confined to games pure and simple , however much conversation may tend towards these i di latter . The games w ll be scussed sa presently , but first it is well to y some thing oi occupations not primarily ath letic i l l , wh le the actua work is detai ed in a separate chapter . The Natural History Society was 1867 ll founded in , and fifteen shi ings make l l a boy an associate for his who e school ife , while later on he may aspire to be one of l the fifteen members , chosen for zea and efficiency in one branch or another of ’ the Society s work . Fortnightly through out the two Winter Terms there is a lecture on some scientific or quasi ll ll scientific subj ect , usua y i ustrated with lantern slides , and quite Often given by old members of the Society and occa sionall 1909 y by boys in the School . - thermometer , and rain gauge in Rugby . Each section has a member of the School as its Secretary , and to each a Master l belongs as wel . The expeditions are nl mai y by bicycle , but sometimes go further afield and it has been found by experience that the best flowers , birds , flints , moths , churches , and landscapes are nearly always in the neighbourhood of some inn where tea may be obtained when Research has induced weariness . On the alternate Saturdays from Octo ber to March the Debating Society , with 1833 records as old as , holds its meetings O in ld Big School . The President is a - ex-o icio Master , the Vice President fi is the of Head the School , and the members on choose annually a Secretary , whom falls much of the labour of arranging debates .

If the subj ects discussed pursue , in the main , a not very wide cycle , the is only following the example of most of institutions its kind . The audience votes at the conclusion , the Upper School votes being more valuable than those o f l the Midd e School , and anyone may off in speak the paper . It is an valuable training for the occasional speech-making which leaves few men quite untried in after life , and the young and undistinguished may lift up his voice here , of as he often does , to the confusion the more distinguished veteran . But the Concert Music aspires far O higher , ratorios being frequently learned , alternately with such choral works as - those of Stanford , Coleridge Taylor , and O of Parry . The School rchestra , strings , wood , and wind , supports the Choir most ably , and both bodies are excused certain work (the Choir avoiding Lines or a ” of O part their Copy , and the rchestra abstaining from an afternoon lesson (on

nearly always necessitated . Each Term - there is an inter House competition , in which all members of the O T C . proper al must partake , in drill and tactic manoeuvres under House section- com v olun manders . The keenest Houses drill ta rily and assiduously for this competition .

A fine Shield is the prize , with the Drill Cup for the runners -up ; and another Shield goes to the winning team in a (voluntary) tactical Competition held twice a year , in which the competing Houses do theoretical work and map drawing from some ground with in reach of the School . of The kernel the training is , of course , Al Camp , held alternately now at dershot on and Salisbury Plain . The eight days of Camp are voluntary , but have for seven years now attracted over 100 of the Corps but epidemics have sadly damaged the two last contingents when the time l came . Promotion goes argely by atten a t dance Camp , and the first stripe is conditional on passing a test after instruc tion in a class held for th e first three weeks of each term . The post of Professional to the XI was l ong held by the famous bowler , Tom For Emmett , of Yorkshire . the last two all- years the round Lancashire cricketer , Cutt ll . e W . R , has been in charge , and promises to do extremely well . He receives much assistance from two or three - l Masters , and has an under Professiona to assist him in the bowling and coaching . E . W . Di on is the present Kent leader ; and as School captain in 1900 he scored a remarkable century at Lord ’ s against time to win the Marlborough match with a few minutes to spare . A . E . Lawton did not h as play for the School , but since cap t i d in a ne hi . Sta nn Derbys re , and J g (captain 1896) has represented Lancash ire as well as Cambridge . Such are some of the better-known ’ cricketers , though many a Varsity Blue and player of distinction elsewhere has ’ not ll been named . Since Di on s time , dl however , har y any Of the XI have - attained to First class Cricket . - Cross country running , if not invented at Rugby— for it is so obviously natural a sport that it must needs have sprung up in many places— was at least systematized and made a School matter at Rugby first of all Schools . Almost all the games of the School have been at one time or another more or less lavishly aided by the Old Rugbeian 1889 for Society , which was founded in that express purpose . A few years ago its sphere w a s most wisely extended to include the advancement o f all matters of importance and interest to the School .

Thus , quite recently , the Society has generously assisted the School Mission , the ’ Officers O Training Corps , the rgan Fund , and other obj ects of moment to some or other section of the Rugbeian body . Each fag has to clean out the study of h is fag-master daily for a week at a time . Many fags and few Sixth in a House means that each fag is only on a study every two or three weeks ; more Sixth and fewer fags obviously entails a more frequent servitude But the cleaning is p erfunc tory in many cases , though in Houses that have study fires the considerable extra burden of lighting and tending these all day falls upon the study fag . Besides the Scholarships given to boys entering the School , there are leaving Exhibitions competed for by those leaving for any one of the Universities . In practice the candidates all go either to O Exh ibi xford or Cambridge . College Open Scholarship is going a very long way towards paying his own way ‘ at the Varsity . The whole School is i exam ned twice a year , in July and

December , and the marks count very ’ heavily towards the term s order , and consequently for promotion . And occa siona l promotion is an urgent necessity for Su erannua all below the VI , for the p tion rule is liable to come down like a guillotine on all who exceed a stay of one or w h o four terms in Form , are above the age limit for their particular f division o the School . Superannuation not is rigid , for that would be !a manifest m inj ustice . Extenuating circu stances of r of va ious kinds are taken into account , which the chief is undoubtedly general f excellence o character . Many a veteran lives on securely enough under the sword of Damocles if only his character prevents its fall ; athletic skill w ill not avail him f is in the default o that . Only in the XX a longer stay than four terms not only l a lowed but in a few cases enforced . For l scholars reach the XX early in ife , but are wisely not allowed to enter the w its l VI , ith privi eges and responsibilities , r until sixteen years Old o hard upon it .

Their enforced delay in the XX can only of be beneficial , seeing that the teaching the XX has for fifty years and more been the pride of the School. A word or two of explanation should be given about the Lower School of

Sh eriffe . Lawrence The Founder , we sa w for loca l , meant his School chiefly N w . o boys , as the nineteenth century on di went , the or nary Public School — or education grew unsuitable for , at b — of any rate , undesired y sons trades wh o people in the Town , meant their boys to take over their business . Accord in l to g y , provide especially an education suitable to a commercial career , the Subordinate School — to give it its — 1878 l usual title was founded in , c ose to the great School . Parents of boys turn see up in strong force , some to their paragons clad in dress clothes and march ing up to receive prizes from the Head or master , acting in the English , Greek , and French scenes which are a normal feature of the proceedings ; others to hope that their at present undistinguished scapegraces may one day emulate these 1 feats . Until 909 it was impossible for more than half the School to be crowded in to the Speeches , but now in the Temple Speech Room there is room for visitors and School alike . Whether the Middle School regard this as a blessing is another matter . Beyond doubt it is a pleasure to parents (else wh y do they come to hear their sons praised in public for the Headmaster usually takes occasion to thank this or the other member of the VI h for valuable help .
