About Husky Hockey

Husky Hockey at the University of Washington is one of the oldest and most distinguished non-varsity programs within the Department of Recreation Sports Program. A student board runs and organizes the club, with assistance from the coaches, players, and volunteers. The team is primarily funded by student dues, fundraising, corporate and individual sponsorship. The club is a non-profit organization, which allows tax-deductible contributions to help deter the high costs of operating a traveling collegiate team. Since the 1920s, the team has competed against teams locally, regionally, and along the entire West Coast. Competitors have ranged from local enthusiasts to other major universities. The Club at the University of Washington has represented its school proudly – both on and off the ice. In the past six years the team has enjoyed the growth and organization of non-varsity ice hockey at the collegiate level nationally. By joining such associations as the Intercollegiate PAC8 Hockey Conference (PAC8) and the national American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), the team has risen to a caliber and competitiveness of play close to varsity DIII NCAA teams. Husky Hockey travels up and down the West Coast to compete for the PAC8 conference championship against such teams as Washington State University, Oregon, UCLA, USC, CAL and Stanford. They also vie for the ACHA National Tournament Championship against over 30 teams in the ACHA-West Region and 120 other teams across the United States. Husky Hockey strives to bring positive recognition to the university through dedication, hard work, and the exhibi- tion of disciplined hockey. The organization also works towards the promotion and growth of the sport within the community. The program provides a successful learning experience for students at the University of Washington and from other local higher education institutions, by providing volunteer and internship positions.

Non-varsity sports receive minimal funding from universities. There- fore, the Husky Hockey organization has to raise money through fundraisers, sponsorships, and dues collection in order to survive. The team relies heavily on ticket sales, donations, and sponsors to meet their annual budget of over $50,000. Players individually pay for all practice and game ice, officials, equipment, travel, meals, and lodging. All staff and coaches are volunteers and donate their time to the team. Husky Hockey is also set up as a non-profit organization so it’s a win- win situation in respect to donations, which are all tax-deductible. If you are interested in volunteering, donating time, monies or resources, or wish to advertise or sponsor the team in the home game program or on the web site, please contact us at www.huskyhockey.net. Go UW Hockey! Help Deter the High Costs... Methods of Giving: Annual Cash Gifts The most popular way of giving is through an unrestricted cash contribution. Corporate Sponsorship A corporate sponsor is currently being sought after to enjoy West Coast exposure, as well as any media coverage during the year. A single corporate sponsor logo is permitted by PAC-8 to be worn on team jerseys. Other corporate sponsorships are also available. Advertise Advertising is easy and affordable with Husky Hockey. From the game program to the web site, enjoy exposure to collegiate hockey fans. Contact us to learn about several of the packages we have available. Matching Gifts Many companies have matching gift programs for contributions by employees. This method is an excellent opportunity to increase your donation to the team at no additional cost to you. Check with your company’s benefits department for matching gift information. Planned Gifts or Endowments Donors interested in supporting the future of Husky Hockey sometimes choose to make life income or planned gifts. Divisions are divided into regions and each team vies for an invitation to the divisional ACHA National Championship Tournament. PAC8 Collegiate Hockey Conference (PAC8) The PAC8 Conference, founded in 1995, is composed of those PACIFIC 10 schools with university sanctioned ice hockey programs. The teams within the conference are held to tougher educational eligibility requirements than those within the governing national ACHA body. Each team plays 10 plus games within the conference for a chance to go to the prestigious PAC8 Championship. Team, indi- vidual, and coaching awards are handed out each year at the PAC8 Banquet.

6 Husky Hockey 2002-2003 Recap

The Husky Hockey team completed the 2002-2003 with a record of 13-12-1 in the regular season. The Huskies finished the year capturing their third straight Athletic Awards I-5 Cup Champi- onship title over Oregon. They placed second in the PAC8 during the regular season, and dropped to 4th place in the PAC8 Champi- onship despite out-shooting their opponents in the semi-finals 42- 24. The Huskies also placed in the single digits once again in the ACHA-West, ranked 9th, among thirty teams. Several Husky Hockey players received individual awards in the PAC8 ranks.

Husky Hockey Individual Awards

The Husky Hockey team does not hand out individual awards to players each year because the organization truly believes it takes a team effort to be successful and to reach the collective goals of the group. To recognize one above others would be a discredit to this philosophy. However, the following individuals were honored at the regional and national levels last year and should be noted:

Awards (L-R): All PAC8 Teams - " PAC8 First Team, Brett Lawrence, Forward Sean O’Brien, " PAC8 First Team, Shayne Sasseen, Defense Shaun Lawrence, Brett Lawrence, " PAC8 First Team, Craig Lawrence, Goalie Craig Lawrence, " PAC8 Honorable Mention, Sean O'Brien, Forward Shayne Sasseen " PAC8 Honorable Mention, Shawn Lawrence, Forward

Coach Cindy Dayley was selected in September by Virginia Mason’s “Team Medicine,” along with six other nominees, to be honored at the Friday, September 12th Mariner’s game -”Celebrating Women Night” - for her community involvement and leadership with the Husky Hockey. Virginia Mason and the Mariner’s honored women in the community who have made an impact on the lives of others. Coach Dayley was recognized on the field during the pre-game, given a glass token of appreiation, and was invited to watch the Mariners take on the Angles in the Virginia Mason's Private Suite.

Coach Dayley at the Mariners Game. 2003-2004 Preview

Husky Hockey’s main objective for 2003-2004 is to win the PAC8 title, as they host the PAC8 Intercollegiate Hockey Conference Championship Tournament for the first time. The team is also working towards winning the 2003 Athletic Awards I-5 Cup title for the fourth year in a row. Finally, the team hopes to receive their first-ever invite to the ACHA DII National Championship Tournament, held at the University of Maryland in March. With a strong showing against some of the powerhouse PAC8 and ACHA teams, the Huskies have a good chance to travel to the 20-team national tournament. The Huskies have a small, but strong class of veterans returning to the 2003-2004 season, despite losing several talented players to graduation. With more new players than returning players this year, the Huskies will lean heavily on the knowledge and experience of the veterans to set the tone and communicate what it takes to reach the team's goals in the conference and national division. The veterans will be the strong spring-board for a solid and consistent year. Joining the Huskies this year is yet another exciting group of players with excellent backgrounds on the ice. Look to the rookies this year to make an immediate impact and add additional depth to the already solid crew. Returning for their sixth season, head coach Cindy Dayley and assistant coach Zoe Harris continue to bring leadership and consistency to the program. Joining the coaching staff part-time this year is Doug Kirton, who brings ten years of professional hockey experience to the team. Husky Hockey continues to set their goals high and prepare for yet another exciting season. With the dedication and hard work from every person on the team, as individuals and as a united group, the Huskies will reach their goals.

Husky Hockey Coaching Staff Head Coach Cindy Dayley The guiding force behind the Husky Hockey bench is 42-year-old head coach, Cindy Dayley. She compiled an 87-31-1 record at the University of Washington (UW) in the first five years. She directed the team to three Athletic Awards I-5 Club Championship titles, one Intercollegiate PAC8 Collegiate Hockey Association (PAC8) regular season 1st place finish (2001-2002), two 2nd place finishes, and two PAC8 Championship Tournament 2nd place finishes, and one 4th place finish. Among 30 teams, Dayley marched the team up the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) West Regional ranking from off the charts into single digits. The 2002 PAC8 Conference Coach of the Year and ACHA DII West Region Coach of the Year, Dayley spearheaded the greatest ice hockey turnaround in UW history. The Huskies rebounded from several disappointing years with a winning percentage of less than .201 to finish with an astounding .650 after Dayley’s first year. The next three years Dayley’s teams have won 24 games or more, with winning percentages of .860 and .964 respectively – a testament to her consistent success. Adding to her distinguished list of accomplishments, in 1992 Dayley had her coaching memorabilia entered into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, , for being one of the first women to be a head coach of a men’s collegiate hockey team at any level. Her 1998-1999 Husky Hockey coaching jacket and photograph is periodically displayed at the Hall’s entrance. In September of 2003, Coach Dayley was selected as one of seven nominees for the Team Medicine Virginia Mason’s “Celebrating Women” recognition, and was honored during the Seattle Mariner’s Women’s Night pre-game for her outstanding community involvement and leadership with the Husky Hockey team. A fact even dearer to the head coach’s heart is that players from the team have secured their own success regionally and nationally. They range from First Team All PAC8, to First Team All ACHA DII West, to ACHA DII West Player of the Year, to ACHA DII All American, and everything in between. Even more important to her is the fact that the team has a 100% graduation rate with the majority of the players carrying over 2.5 GPAs. Dayley also assisted in the development of the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s Women’s Division (2000) and currently serves as the Intercollegiate PAC8 Hockey Association Vice President for her second season in the position. In 2002-2003 she was selected to be the ACHA West Region Regional Coordinator, after serving on the ACHA West Ranking Committee for the previous season. Prior to her appointment to the Husky Hockey team, Dayley co-founded a high school girl’s elite program called the 49th Parallel, which showcase Western US and Canadian talent to collegiate scouts. The program placed over 20 girls in varsity Division I and III programs within two years and many with substantial scholarships. At the same time she directed the Seattle Women’s In-Line Hockey team to a 1997 AIRHS National Championship title after forming a team within four months. From 1995-1997, Dayley formed the first girls travel rep team in the Seattle area, which was the first US female team to win the Canadian Lower Female Hockey League regular season and championship title, with a record of 19-0. The team also took third place in USA Hockey Regional Championships and placed half the seniors in collegiate hockey programs. A native of Seattle, Dayley played on several elite women’s teams and for a Canadian women’s AAA team that competed in a Canadian National Women’s AAA Championship. After returning to Seattle, she played for several men’s recreational check teams before retiring in 1994. Coach works fulltime for Washington Mutual Bank as a Project Analyst in the Consumer Bank Credit Planning and Development Department.

13 Husky Hockey Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Zoë Harris

Assisting behind the Husky Hockey bench for the past 5 years is 33-year-old Zoë Harris. Compiling a 87-31-1 record in five years along the side of Coach Dayley, Harris assisted in achieving three Athletic Awards I-5 Club Championship titles, one Intercollegiate PAC-8 Collegiate Hockey Association (PAC-8) regular season 1st place finish, two 2nd place finishes, two PAC-8 Championship Tournament 2nd place finishes, and one 4th place finish. And, among 30 teams, she helped improved the team’s record in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) West Regional’s ranking from “unranked” into single digits. Harris also spearheaded the development of the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s (ACHA) Women’s Division (2000) and continues to serve as the Women’s Division Vice President. Within three years member- ship grew from 15 teams to 32 teams due to her and the commissioner’s efforts. Three ACHA Women’s National Tournaments have been held successfully under her guidance at several locations across the country. This year, she serves as the ACHA Board’s Tech Chair and drove the development of the organization’s new website. Prior to her appointment to the Husky Hockey team, Harris co-founded a high school girl’s elite program called the 49th Parallel, which showcased Northwestern US and Canadian talent to collegiate scouts. The program placed over 20 girls in varsity Division I and III programs within two years, and many with substantial scholarships. At the same time she directed the Seattle Women’s In-Line Hockey team to a 1997 AIRHS National Championship title after forming a team within four months. From 1995-1997, Harris assisted in the formation of the first girls travel rep team in the Seattle area, which was the first US female team to win the Canadian Lower Female Hockey League regular season and championship title, with a record of 19-0. The team also took third place in USA Hockey Regional Championships and placed over half the seniors in a collegiate hockey programs. A native of Barrington, Rhode Island – Harris competed at the Junior National level in both soccer and sailing, placing 10th in the nation in 1986 for junior female sailors. She played ice hockey for the University of Maine Black Bears, where she assisted in the development of the women’s team as president and captain for two years. She received the Coach’s Award for dedication and leadership on and off the ice in 1991 and 1992. She also participated in the 1992 Senior All-Star Game in Providence, RI – for the top seniors in club and varsity collegiate ice hockey.
