By 1889, the University was firmly established as an institution of higher education. Since World War II, the institution has earned an international reputation for its research and graduate programs. It is a leader in such fields as drama, dentistry, medicine, nursing, health services, astronomy, computer science, molecular biotechnology, oceanography, biostatistics, physics, physiology, pharmacology, geography, sociology, and social work. Undergraduates benefit in special ways by learning from professors who are at the forefront of generating new knowl- edge. The UW’s graduate programs are some of the most highly rated in the nation. About Husky Hockey Husky Hockey at the University of Washington is one of the oldest and most distinguished non-varsity programs within the Department of Recreation Sports Program. A student board runs and organizes the club, with assistance from the coaches, players, and volunteers. The team is primarily funded by student dues, fundraising, corporate and individual sponsorship. The club is a non-profit organization, which allows tax-deductible contributions to help deter the high costs of operating a traveling collegiate team. Since the 1920s, the team has competed against teams locally, regionally, and along the entire West Coast. Competitors have ranged from local enthusiasts to other major universities. The Ice Hockey Club at the University of Washington has represented its school proudly – both on and off the ice. In the past six years the team has enjoyed the growth and organization of non-varsity ice hockey at the collegiate level nationally. By joining such associations as the Intercollegiate PAC8 Hockey Conference (PAC8) and the national American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), the team has risen to a caliber and competitiveness of play close to varsity DIII NCAA teams. Husky Hockey travels up and down the West Coast to compete for the PAC8 conference championship against such teams as Washington State University, Oregon, UCLA, USC, CAL and Stanford. They also vie for the ACHA National Tournament Championship against over 30 teams in the ACHA-West Region and 120 other teams across the United States. Husky Hockey strives to bring positive recognition to the university through dedication, hard work, and the exhibi- tion of disciplined hockey. The organization also works towards the promotion and growth of the sport within the community. The program provides a successful learning experience for students at the University of Washington and from other local higher education institutions, by providing volunteer and internship positions. There- fore, the Husky Hockey organization has to raise money through fundraisers, sponsorships, and dues collection in order to survive. The team relies heavily on ticket sales, donations, and sponsors to meet their annual budget of over $50,000. Players individually pay for all practice and game ice, officials, equipment, travel, meals, and lodging. All staff and coaches are volunteers and donate their time to the team. Husky Hockey is also set up as a non-profit organization so it’s a win- win situation in respect to donations, which are all tax-deductible. If you are interested in volunteering, donating time, monies or resources, or wish to advertise or sponsor the team in the home game program or on the web site, please contact us at www.huskyhockey.net.
