Angolan Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis ssp. angolensis) Appendix 1: Historical and recent geographic range and population of Angolan Giraffe G. c. angolensis Geographic Range ANGOLA Historical range in Angola Giraffe formerly occurred in the mopane and acacia savannas of southern Angola (East 1999). According to Crawford-Cabral and Verissimo (2005), the historic distribution of the species presented a discontinuous range with two, reputedly separated, populations. The western-most population extended from the upper course of the Curoca River through Otchinjau to the banks of the Kunene (synonymous Cunene) River, and through Cuamato and the Mupa area further north (Crawford-Cabral and Verissimo 2005, Dagg 1962). The intention of protecting this western population of G. c. angolensis, led to the proclamation of Mupa National Park (Crawford-Cabral and Verissimo 2005, P. Vaz Pinto pers. comm.). The eastern population occurred between the Cuito and Cuando Rivers, with larger numbers of records from the southeast corner of the former Mucusso Game Reserve (Crawford-Cabral and Verissimo 2005, Dagg 1962). By the late 1990s Giraffe were assumed to be extinct in Angola (East 1999). According to Kuedikuenda and Xavier (2009), a small population of Angolan Giraffe may still occur in Mupa National Park; however, no census data exist to substantiate this claim. As the Park was ravaged by poachers and refugees, it was generally accepted that Giraffe were locally extinct until recent re-introductions into southern Angola from Namibia (Kissama Foundation 2015, East 1999, P. Vaz Pinto pers. comm.). BOTSWANA Current range in Botswana Recent genetic analyses have revealed that the population of Giraffe in the Central Kalahari and Khutse Game Reserves in central Botswana is from the subspecies G. -

85 WINNING HEARTS AND MINDS IN THE NAMIBIAN BORDER WAR Lieneke Eloff de Visser1 Abstract During the Namibian border war, South African counterinsurgency doctrine acknowledged the importance of securing the allegiance and cooperation of the population. This article demonstrates that, in the operational zone, the responsibility of winning the hearts and minds of the Namibian people largely fell to the SADF (South African Defence Force). Although the SADF dedicated considerable resources to this task, these efforts were often at cross-purposes with those of institutions in the political, police and administrative domains. In addition, there was a lack of unity and purpose within the SADF. This article argues that lack of unity between and within the different domains undermined the effort at winning the hearts and minds of the Namibian population, and must at least partly have contributed to SWAPO´s victory in the 1989 elections. Introduction In devising appropriate responses to the challenges of the Namibian border war (1974–1989), the South African military drew on the work of C.A. „Pop‟ Fraser and John McCuen. Fraser, a WWII veteran, became Chief of Joint Operations of the South African Defence Force in 1966. In an unpublished study entitled Lessons learnt from past revolutionary wars, released in the early sixties, Fraser distilled the basic principles of counterinsurgency warfare from the work of authors such as Galula and Trinquier. McCuen served in staff and command positions in the United States Army in Vietnam, Thailand, Germany and Indonesia. While serving on the US Army General Staff in 1966 his book, The Art of Counter-Revolutionary War – The Strategy of Counter-Insurgency, was published. -

Sumário da Situação de Insegurança Alimentar Aguda IPC 2019/20 Partes do Sul de Angola enfrentam grave insegurança alimentar aguda. A zona sul de Angola onde se situam as três provincias visitadas (Cuando Cubango, Cunene e Huila) ao longo do inquérito foi severamente afectada pela seca. Como resultado, nota-se a fraca produção agrícola, perda de animais, escassez de água para o consumo humano e abeberramento do gado, perda de bens, deslocamentos de pessoas e animais, tendo afectado os modos de vida. No período actual (Julho a Setembro de 2019), cerca de 422 000 pessoas sao classificadas em IPC fase 3 e 4. As familias en essa fase estão a enfrentar dificuldades no acesso a alimentos ou são capazes de satisfazer apenas as necessidades alimentares mínimas por meio de estratégias de crise e emergência. No período projectado (Outubro de 2019 a Fevereiro de 2020), estima-se que cerca de 562 000 pessoas estarao em IPC fase 3 e 4, e as familias enfrentarão dificuldades no acesso a alimentos ou serão capazes de satisfazer apenas as necessidades alimentares mínimas por meio de Insegurança Alimentar estratégias de crise e emergência. -

The Controversy of the Battle of Cassinga. Does the Media Provide the Final Answer?
JOERNAAL/JOURNAL BARNARD THE CONTROVERSY OF THE BATTLE OF CASSINGA. DOES THE MEDIA PROVIDE THE FINAL ANSWER? Leo Barnard* The military hostilities during the years 1966 to 1989 between the military forces of South Africa, the former South West Africa and Unita on the one hand, and Cuba, the Angolese forces and PLAN (People's Liberation Army for Namibia), the military wing of SWAPO, on the other hand, were popularly known as the Border or Bush War. Other authors referred to it as the battle for the independence of Namibia. During these hostilities, the Battle of Cassinga was one of the most decisive battles, especially in respect of military, political and social aspects. Twenty-five years after this battle, it is still of the utmost importance that it is seen in the right perspective. The controversy of the events will, despite the media's efforts to get to the truth, still for years hold the attention of historical researchers. The Battle of Cassinga took place against the above-mentioned background on 4 May 1978 between elements of the South African Air Force as well as a parachute force and elements of PLAN. Cassinga, formerly a mining village, was used by SWAPO as a basis and was situated about 300 km north of the Namibian border. In this paper the focus will mainly be on three principal moments: The controversy over the Battle of Cassinga, its interpretation by the media as well as probable reasons for the way in which the media handled it. From the moment that the Battle of Cassinga took place, it was shrouded in contro- versy. -

Constitui as fundações para a vida sobre a terra através de funções ecológicas, a regulação do clima e recursos hídricos e servem como habitat para plantas e animais. As florestas também fornecem uma vasta gama de bens essenciais, tais como madeira, comida, forragem, medicamentos e também, oportunidades para lazer, renovação espiritual e outros serviços. Hoje em dia, as florestas sofrem pressões devido ao aumento de procura de produtos e serviços com base na terra, o que resulta frequentemente na degradação ou transformação da floresta em formas insustentáveis de utilização da terra. Quando as florestas são perdidas ou severamente degradadas. A sua capacidade de funcionar como reguladores do ambiente também se perde. O resultado é o aumento de perigo de inundações e erosão, a redução na fertilidade do solo e o desaparecimento de plantas e animais. Como resultado, o fornecimento sustentável de bens e serviços das florestas é posto em perigo. Como resposta do aumento de procura de informações fiáveis sobre os recursos de florestas e árvores tanto ao nível nacional como Internacional l, a FAO iniciou uma actividade para dar apoio à monitorização e avaliação de recursos florestais nationais (MANF). O apoio à MANF inclui uma abordagem harmonizada da MANF, a gestão de informação, sistemas de notificação de dados e o apoio à análise do impacto das políticas no processo nacional de tomada de decisão. -
