THE SAGE FORUM Est. September 2019 Issue 1 October 2019 Construction at The Sage School: Offices and Classrooms Updated Benjamin L. As you may or may not know, there has been some construction near the front office. What is happening? Here is some information. The admissions, development, and business offices are moving to a new house that the school bought at 177 Mechanic St. The rooms are becoming two new classrooms. Mrs. Leary (Head of School) and Mrs. Downs (Administrative Assistant) have shifted offices within the building and Mrs. Zelic (Coordinator of Auxiliary Programs) has joined the front office. Mrs. Tanner and Mrs. Daniels have moved into the new classrooms. We asked Mrs. Fahey (Director of Admission) about her thoughts and this is what she said: "Through the purchase of 177 Mechanic Street, The Sage School has the exciting opportunity to expand our campus and increase classroom space for our growing student body. As the Director of Admission, I now have a brand new cozy office (complete with a fireplace) where I can bring families who wish to talk more in depth about the type of educational environment they are in search of for their child. Having a kitchen allows us to provide food and drink more readily, and the fact that the house faces Mechanic Street offers us more visibility and marketing opportunities to passing cars. I do want to buy a Fitbit to record my steps though, as I travel back and forth between the new house and the main building rather frequently. Hopefully, the winter will not be too bad this year, but I will be keeping an extra set of boots in my office just in case.” Let’s hope the faculty and staff get settled in their new rooms soon. As most of you probably know, the student council elections occurred Friday, October 18. Considering the excitement behind the elections, The Sage Forum interviewed Sage student council advisor, Mr. Miller, about tips for officers, his goals for this year, and more! Mr. Miller confidently stated that diligence is the most important characteristic of student council representatives, “It’s not always an easy job: being in meetings, missing recess, etc.... Beyond that public speaking and compromise are important skills to have.” When he was further asked about how these skills are developed, he mentioned commitment, “Second graders come to talk to me about why they can’t be reps. I try to talk to them about what a big deal it is to miss recesses. It is a huge commitment. Such a big commitment that Ms. Pearce and I take turns attending all the sub-committee meetings.” Given this commitment, it’s hard to see the benefits that come with being in student council. Afterall, candidates have to write a speech, create a poster, and campaign for weeks in the hopes to be elected. Among the benefits mentioned was maturity. “If a student is able to put the needs of something else above his/her own needs.” Selflessness. “This divine selflessness isn’t something that is age-appropriate for a middle/elementary school student. It is understandable to miss a commitment now and then. It doesn’t make someone a bad person.” He also mentioned “Working together”. He emphasized that, “It is HARD to work with other people. [Sometimes] Sage kids prefer to work on their own because collaboration can be frustrating.” Branching off of this is another point he mentioned, delegation. “The best thing an [officer] can do is to realize that he or she can’t be everything at once. They have to look for the potential in everyone and realize what he or she can and can’t do.” Lastly, he mentioned that, “Leadership is a skill that the officers leave with. The person that they become is important.” With all of these benefits, it’s understandable why 32 students ran for office this year! Officers and representatives, listen up because the next thing Mr. Miller was asked about was his goals for the council this year! He readily answered that he hoped the no-bake-sale-crisis could be solved in the upcoming year. He expanded upon this by saying that the reason why the removal of bake sales had such a tremendous impact on the council was that, “students enjoy them, and this makes the student council feel like they have accomplished something.” Mr. Miller felt confident that student council would find other things to fulfill this desire. As Mr. Miller says, “student council is about service. About serving the school, community, and world.” There is always something new we can do to improve these communities, starting with Mr. Miller’s goal of “representatives talking more to their constituents.” When Mr. Miller was asked how he became involved in student council, he responded by saying that he was the “historian” of his high school. In this position, the librarian would cut out pieces of information from newspapers and Mr. Miller was supposed to present these articles at high school reunions. Mr. Miller was introduced to student council at Sage by his predecessor, Ms. Cordes-Vaughn. When asked about this he said, “Many, many moons ago, (Sudarshan, Claudia, Matthew) so I guess this will be my 4th student council on my own, but I did it with Ms. Cordes-Vaughn before that. I think she wanted to find someone else to pass the torch to.” The last piece of this interview, discussed the role of student council in Sage. Something that summarizes Mr. Miller’s thoughts on this is “During the last few years student council has kind of been searching for [its purpose]. Student council has done so much good. When the students create something, they become part of the school in an important way.” He also mentioned that student council allows students to have a voice. “It's an institution. It’s a thing that’s been around for so long we can’t imagine life without it.
