The 90'S Gave Birth to Land of Passion, an Hallucinating Goth Rock Band [email protected] www.popoisdioh.com www.reverbnation.com/popoisdioh «The 90’s gave birth to Land of Passion, an hallucinating goth rock band. An adventure that lasted ten years, ten years of movements and mutations. 2003 revealed the continuation of Land of Passion under the Popoï Sdioh moniker, with a first album revealing their raging potential. Ten years later, the world is not going better at all, neither is Popoï Sdioh’s state of mind; or could it mean that their state of mind is pervasive? So it was about time for a new album, opening the door of a strange, brutal, earsplitting universe including tribal rhythms and strong post-punk accents. An hybrid music drowning you into some sort of industrial batcave made of tortuous corridors shaping a maze. If we would have to indulge with some namedropping, Killing Joke, Virgin Prunes, or even Nox, could be mentioned. But of course this is only just optio- nal. new album «Before & after party» The music of Popoï Sdioh is a full experience that we are proud to share, on Brouillard Définitif / Nerves prod. inviting you to discover, « before and after party »... available MAY 2012 Brouillard Définitif press release apr.2012 tribal-postpunk-batcave-industrial full POPOI SDIOH .pdf pressbook+bio : www.popoisdioh.com/PRESS/ www.brouillard-definitif.fr www.nerves.net press GUTS OF DARKNESS - may 2012 «Before & after party» reviewed by Twillight Popoï Sdioh ont réussi là où Corpus et Lt-No ont échoué en parvenant à faire évoluer un groupe purement deathrock/batcave vers une orientation plus electro/indus, peut-être justement parce que dans leur cas, le chan- gement n’a pas été aussi radical qu’on aurait pu le craindre. Before & after party» reviewed by Tomasz Woodraf Bardzo długo czekaliśmy na nowy album szaleńców z francusko-belgijskiego gangu Popoi Sdioh, warto jednak było czekać - doczekaliśmy się wspaniałej kontynuacji i rozwinięcia debiutanckiego krążka zespołu, nowy album kapeli zatytułowany «Before And After Party» został wydany we współpracy wydawnictw Nerves Prod. oraz Brouillard Defini- tif. «Before And After Party» to godny polecenia rasowy kawał surowego mięcha dla każdego wymagającego słuchacza, który chciałby poczuć czym smakują odmienne stany świadomości - czas już zacząć imprezę z Popoi Sdioh! NEMESIS TO GO - sept. 2011 about show at Drop Dead Festival 2012 Berlin «... Our last band tonight actually is a band. I don’t know much about Popoï Sdioh, least of all how you’re supposed to pronounce that name. All I know is that all of a sudden there’s a man wandering around the room, barking into a megaphone. This is the band’s intro, and a neat way of blurring the edges between the electropunks on the floor, and the band on the stage. Hey, conceptual! I like ‘em already. But then, all eyes front, please, because here come Popoï Sdioh themseves: a deceptively normal-looking bunch of scruffy rock guys who somehow create a screaming, battering racket, like first-album Killing Joke mixed with a chorus of air raid sirens. It’s harsh, uncompromising stuff, but there’s a solid rhythm behind everything, which means that even at their most brain-fryingly noisy, Popoï Sdioh always have a groove. You can dance to them, if you’re brave. Or just stand at a safe distance and watch the manic drummer as he comes out from behind his kit to take a lead vocal. «What do we want? What do we need? What do we get?» he screeches at us, as if his sanity depends on getting the right answer. Popoï Sdioh end the evening on a suitably apocalyptic note. If the world is still here, we’ll be back tomorrow for Drop Dead’s final wrap-up.» http://www.nemesis.to/dropdead2011_5live.htm OBSKURE MAG - sept. 2011 about «Afterparty sessions» demo discography POPOI SDIOH POPOI SDIOH POPOI SDIOH «before & after party» «afterparty session» self titled cd album 2012 demo cdr 2011 cd album 2003 LAND OF PASSION LAND OF PASSION LAND OF PASSION «mud» «the arrival» «stigmata sessions» demotape 2000 cd album 1996 demotape 1995 LAND OF PASSION LAND OF PASSION LAND OF PASSION «the prayer» «darksound» «even death may die» demotape 1993 demotape 1992 demotape 1991 concerts 2003-2012 27.05.2012 | Lille - F | Le Select (+ Cheshire Cat (the bouncing) ) 30.04.2012 | Paris - F | Le Klub (+ Cheshire Cat (thebouncing) ) 01.11.2011 | Lille - F | La Chimère (+ Genetiks+ Cheshire Cat (thebouncing) ) 31.10.2011 | Mons - B | Dark Cats Café | (+ Genetiks) 29.10.2011 | Nijmegen - NL | (+ Genetiks) 05.09.2011 | Berlin - G | Drop Dead Festival 11.06.2011 | Brussels - B | Sale Garcia Lorca (+ 26 tears+K-oz Office) 21.05.2011 | Lille - F | La Péniche | (+ Charles de Goal) 30.04.2011 | Mons - B | Dark Cats | (+ dj PunkHomer) 10.07.2010 | Warszawa - PL | No Mercy | (+ Wieze Fabryk) 21.11.2009 | Templeuve - B | La Mare aux Diables | (+ Oxsana Prism) 17.10.2009 | Li?ge - B | p?niche La logia | (+Hynnner vs Hantis3 + Dreadfool) 16.05.2009 | Tournai - B | Le Coquin 07.03.2009 | Templeuve - B | La Mare aux Diables | + BakXIII + HvsH + DOP 15.12.2007 | Mouscron - B | El Bar (+ Hynnner vs Hantis3 + silver Cross) 02.12.2007 | Lille - F | festival Alienor (+ Hynnner vs Hant1s3) 18.11.2007 | Sint Niklaas - B | support for Christian death 1334 31.03.2006 | Tournai - B | La Rocaille (+ Miguel & the living Dead ) 02.08.2006 | Tournai - B | Electric Summer Night (+Muckrackers+Voidkampf+Hynner) 28.05.2006 | Paris - F | Le Klub (+Deadchovsky+Darmstadt) 16.04.2006 | Reims - F | L’Atalante 09.04.2006 | Bratislava - SK | Subclub 08.04.2006 | Warszawa - PL | Aurora Klub (+Miguel & the living Dead) 19.11.2005 | Nancy - F | L’austrasique (+ System + Echo West) 05.11.2005 | Reims - F | Le Tigre (+ Zorglub) 22.10.2005 | Mont Rouge - F | Kosmos Music Caf? In the beginning there were the parties, then the fanzine/magazine called Stigma, radio show in the local radio station, concerts and so on. It’s a long time and a lot of work was done inbetween. Nattsol: Tell me more about Batcave.sk. What is it actually? Mary0: Actually it’s more or less just the monthly party including Live acts. However, we’re working on new visual of the webzine at the moment. Well, it’s always a question of time to work on the projects like tis. Especially when one has a family and regular job. Then the priorities change a bit… 3 Nattsol: The next question is just to Mary0.

  • Edwards and Monnet 2Nd Pages.Indd
6 “I’ll Be Whatever Gotham Needs Me to Be” Batman, the Gothic and Popular Culture Agnieszka Soltysik Monnet Batman fi rst appeared in 1939, close on the heels of the recently created and hugely successful Superman. The young comic book industry, just emerg- ing as a separate medium from the newspaper comic strip, and hitherto mainly defi ned by men in suits, now demanded more visually appealing (i.e. costumed) characters. Batman was born as a darker and more com- plex variation on the red-caped superhero: he is Superman’s Gothic dou- ble.1 Although many superheroes were created in the 1940s and since then, Batman has remained the darkest and most problematic, not least because his powers come not from a magical source but from the brooding inten- sity of a childhood trauma. Over seventy years later, Batman has grown to become bigger than ever, eclipsing even Superman in recent decades. Why has this been the case? And how did this happen? In addressing these ques- tions, I want to suggest that the main reason for the success of Batman in the twenty-fi rst century—a multi-billion dollar Batman industry—has been Christopher Nolan’s return to the darker roots of the Batman story. Like any enduring Gothic fi gure, Batman’s regenerative cultural power depends on his ambivalence, his ethical complexity and moral ambiguity. On a formal level, this ambivalence plays itself out in the tension between Bat- man’s camp aesthetics and the Gothic characteristics of the fi gure; that is, between the campy smirk of the “Caped Crusader” and the furrowed brow of the brooding “Dark Knight.” Historically, whenever Batman is camped to its limit, the Gothic creeps in, returning the character to a darker and more complicated fi gure within the narrative.

Alien Sex Fiend – a lifelong „Death Trip“ www.der‐schwarze‐planet.de about the band and their new album „Death Trip“ Bizarre, spacy, maniacs, in terms of music too much Techno to be a Goth band...all this I’ve heard about the British band Alien Sex Fiend. You may love or hate them, but Alien Sex Fiend won’t pass by without a trace. Nik and Mrs. Fiend – or with their civil names Nikolas and Christine Wade – are the creative and energetic nucleus of Alien Sex Fiend. Its not only their music that is totally different but also their division of labour in the band is rather unconventional: he sings and is doing the artwork of their albums whereas she is responsible for all the professional sounds and music. This cooperation evolves electronic‐technoid, warped sounds and loops – sometimes more, sometimes less accompanied by e‐guitars. Add to this Nik Fiends manic voice with exalted tunes, ghoulish murmurs or demanding, lunatic screams. Til today, Alien Sex Fiend stand for inimitable, weird sounds and unsurpassed zombie‐performance. I was so blown away when I saw them first time on stage, that ever since I’ve been a real fan and have been drinking my tea at home from Alien Sex Fiend cups, only. Here come the Fiends! The first time I saw Alien Sex Fiend live was at the Zillo‐Festival 2004 at Loreley on the river Rhine, Germany. Yes, I’m not a fan since the band was founded ‐ I’m not that old **ooops, sorry**. Alien Sex Fiend was established in 1982.
