The two May Day AIDS demonstrations were preceded on Saturday, April 29 by a mock trial of bigots. It was held at 4 p.m. on the steps of the State Supreme Court. On trial were Rev. Jerry Falwell, Judge Jack Hampton, Rev. Mark Weaver and PhylliS Schlafly, among others. Reading the charges was John Thomas of Dallas, who sternly played the role of prosecuting attorney. i&Qk·:&.Q

The extraordinary AIDS protests at the State Capitol on May 1 were the climax to the highly successful April 30 March on Austin when upwards of 30,000 gay men and lesbians marched on the State Capi- tol, in the largest demonstration ever in Austin, demanding equal rights, an end to oppression, a stop to hate crimes, more AIDS funding and the removal of the 21.06 sodomy statute from the state penal code. The May Day demonstrations were billed by the March on Austin Committee as Lobby Day, said the sponsor, the Les- bian/Gay Rights Lobby [LGRL] of Texas. Members of GUTS chapters in Dallas and Houston, LGRL supporters and ACT UP demonstrators were heavily involved

After reading the charges, Thomas asked the crowd, "What say ye the peo- ple?" And, of course, on each charge, the crowd yelled back "Guilty!" The punishment handed out was to enter all of the guilty into the "Hall of Shame." The boisterous crowd carried placards bearing photographs of the faces of the guilty enlarged to giant proportions. The mock trial was staged by the GUTS chapters of Dallas and Houston and the

They came to voice their opposition to a recent feature in the campus newspaper about gays which was written by colum- nist Rick Rutledge. The demonstration was not aimed so much at the newspaper as it was "aimed at homophobia and Rick Rutledge's edi- torial and opinions," said GLSA co-chair- person, Frank Serio. What did Rutledge say that outraged the campus gay community? He quoted some questionable data about homosexuality, using some old Kinsey surveys and some hate statements by controversial, anti-gay Dr. Paul Cameron. "We specifically call into question the validity of sources, and some of the figures are outdated," Jeff Graham, GLSA mem- ber, told Daily Texan reporter Ron Lubke.
