International Journal of Communication 6 (2012) Interview with Jim Anderson 1463 Michael Meyen Interviews Jim Anderson Can you tell me something about your parents and about your first professional dreams? Both sides of my family homesteaded in Salina, Kansas. Our family has a long history in farming. My father was probably the first of either side of the family to go on to college. He was, for a short time, at Creighton University, but had to leave to go to work. After some time in business, he completed a career- based MBA from the University of Chicago. My mother had a two-year teaching certificate from Marymount College in Salina. She worked in a one-room schoolhouse: all eight grades in one room. Did religion play any role in your childhood? On my mother’s side, they were Roman Catholic, and on my father’s side, Methodists. I grew up well- connected in the Roman Catholic Church. The University of Detroit is a Jesuit school. At least it was one [Jesuit] back then. What kind of business did your father run? He started out as a bank accountant and was successful at that, but then came the Depression. He went down to Amarillo, Texas, sold refrigerators, and came back to be the general controller for General Telephone. He also worked for Arthur Andersen. His last job was at the Ford Motor Company, from which he retired. His moves led us all around the country. My story starts in Detroit, Michigan, where I went to high school and entered college. Do you still remember why you chose to study communication? Detroit was one of the few schools that had a communication degree at that time. What led me into this area was educational television. I got in quite early at a local station. I worked there as a technical director and as a cameraman. You did everything. I was even on-air for a while. Why did you abandon your beginning career as a TV star? By then, I had been working almost eight years in television. I really couldn’t see myself being 60 years old and still there. It was a career that ended fairly quickly. Can you tell me something about your main academic teachers? The first professor that made an impression upon me was Alphonse F. Kuhn, SJ at Detroit, a historian— and disliked by nearly everyone. He didn’t praise you if you didn’t do good work. He probably showed me what it could be like if you were really serious about your work. In the next semester, I opted out to the other guy who taught history, and whose name I can’t remember. He was sloppy in his work. The difference between those two men was so obvious that the impression lasts till today. How would you compare the student Jim Anderson with your students today? I was not a particularly good student. High school was easy, even though it was a private school. When I got to college, it took me a while to learn the techniques of mastering what you had to do. After the first two years, it was pretty straightforward. If I could figure out a way to beat the system, [then] I would beat the system. That’s the way it was until I came in the PhD program. 1464 Michael Meyen International Journal of Communication 6 (2012) What happened to you there? At Iowa, I

BELMONTES Teon Kennedy and Bryant Jennings Photo Credits :John DiSanto PHILADLEPHIA - A press conference was held to officially announce the next installment of the NBC Sports Network "Fight Night" boxing series. On December 8, 2012, a Philly-centric fight card will take place at Temple University's Pearson / McGonigle Hall on Broad Street in North Philly. The NBCSN broadcast will begin at 9PM ET. North Philly native and #5 heavyweight contender Bryant Jennings, 15-0, 7 KOs, takes on Bowie Tupou, 22-2, 16 KOs, of Tonga, in the 12-round main event with Jennings' USBA heavyweight title on the line. The 10-round junior lightweight co-feature bout is an intriguing face off between North Philadelphian Teon Kennedy, 17-2-2, 7 KOs, who's coming off a world title challenge, and the undefeated Texan Jerry Belmontes, 17-0, 5 KOs. Kennedy is moving up in weight for the fight. From the lobby of the fight venue, Hall of Fame promoter J Russell Peltz, a Temple University Grad, conducted the press conference, and along with Jennings and Kennedy spoke about the upcoming blockbuster event promoted by Main Events, Peltz Boxing, Goossen Tutor and BAM Boxing. J Russell Peltz with Temple Owl Photo Credits: John DiSanto J Russell Peltz: "This building opened in 1969 and I've been a (Temple Basketball) season ticket holder ever since. But I never thought I'd be promoting a fight here, certainly not on national television. "Fight Night" is probably the most successful boxing series going right now on television because the fights are actually competitive.

  • Oscar “Kaboom” Rivas on Special Mission to Become Heavyweight & Bridgerweight World Champion
Oscar “Kaboom” Rivas on special mission to become heavyweight & bridgerweight World Champion QUEBEC CITY, Ontario, Canada (March 24, 2021) – Fresh off his recent third-round stoppage of Sylvera “Sly” Louis in their rematch, World Boxing Council (WBC) No. 1 rated bridgerweight Oscar “Kaboom” Rivas (27-1, 19 KOs) is on a special mission to not only become the first bridgerweight world champion but capture the world heavyweight crown as well. A 2008 Colombian Olympian, Rivas is currently rated as the WBC’s No. 1-rated contender in the bridgerweight division (-224 lbs.), and No. 9 in The Ring magazine’s heavyweight rankings. Prior to his rematch with Louis, Rivas hadn’t fought in 20 months due mainly to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Never- the-less, “Kaboom” remained professional, training throughout his ring absence, and now he’s positioned to fight for the inaugural WBC bridgerweight title. “I love this sport,” Rivas said from his Montreal home. I dedicate my life to boxing. I never stopped training because I love it and I can’t live without it. I am an athlete! The pandemic didn’t make things easy for me or anybody else, especially for a natural heavyweight like me. “In the ring, I am having fun, and that’s what drives me. After I was able to knockdown my opponent (Louis) in the first round, my coach asked me to take advantage of the opportunity to box because I hadn’t fought in 20 months. I hadn’t stepped in the ring and that’s what I enjoy every minute of.” Even though he’s on the precipice of winning his first world title, as a bridgerweight fighter, Rivas will not be fully satisfied without becoming a 2-division world champion.

MEASUREMENT, EMPIRICAL MEANINGFULNESS AND THREE-VALUED LOGIC BY PATRICK SUPPES TECBNICAL REPORr NO. 20 PREPARED UNDER CONTRACT Nonr 225(17) (NR 171-034) FOR OFFICE OF NAVAL RESEARCH Reproduction in Whole or in Part is Permitted for any Purpose of the United States Government APPLIED MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS LABORATORY STANFORD UNIVERSITY STANFORD, CALIFORNIA December 29, 1958 Measurement, Empirical Meaningfulness and Three-Valued Logic21 By Patrick Suppes 1. Introduction. The predominant current opinion appears to be that it is scarcely possible to set up criteria of empirical meaningfulness for individual statements. What is reQuired, it is said, is an analysis of theories taken as a whole. There is even some skepticism regarding this, and it has been romantically suggested that the entire fabric of experience and language must be considered and taken into account in any construction of general categories of meaning or analyticity. ,What I have to say makes no contribution to the attempt to find a general criterion of meaning applicable to arbitrary statements. Rather I am concerned to exemplify a general method which will yield specific positive criteria for specific branches of science. A brief analysis of two simple examples will indicate the sort of thing I have in mind. Consider the statement: The mass of the sun is greater than If a physicist were asked if (1) is true or false, he would most likely reply that it depends on what unit of mass is implicitly understood in uttering (1). On the other hand, if we asked him about the truth of the sentence: 21 This research was supported in part by the Group Psychology Branch of the Office of Naval Research.
