6 pm: ELDAR VÅGAN SINGS “LEILIGHETSVISER”. Concert and conversation with Kari Slaatsveen and Liv Kreken “Let’s sing a sentimental song!” We know these “Leilighetsviser” from weddings, confirmations and traditional dinners. But sentimental songs for occasions can be more than rhymes scribbled on pink paper, and have a long and literary tradition in . Eldar Vågan from Vazelina Bilopphøggers most often sings about life along the Mjøsa. Now after digging in the song archives of the National Library, he brings his unique style to sentimental songs for occasions.

7.30 pm: HEI HÅ, RA-TA-TA Conversation with and about Dizzie Tunes Colourful songs are key to the history of the musicians of the Dizzie Tunes show band. Posters, pictures, song material and lots more about their history has been collected. The band will be present for conversation about the days with Dizzie, before a screening of the revue film “Kjære lille Norge” under an open sky.

9 pm: KJÆRE LILLE NORGE (Bohwim & Schanke, 1973) Open-air cinema The film is being screened in the Hydroparken right across the road. “Kjære Lille Norge” is a film version of the “Chat Noir” revue of the same name from 1973 with Arve Opsahl, Elsa Lystad, Kirsti Sparboe and Dizzie Tunes.

We have encountered drummer and singer Siv Øyunn Kjenstad in forward-looking bands such as Chili Vanilla, Friensemblet and Trondheim Jazzorkester. Nordic jazz, alternative pop and West-African musical traditions can all be heard in her clear tones and rhythm. Part of this fantastic line-up is star bassist Ellen Andrea Wang and superb pianist Andreas Ulvo, so expect some magic with groovy riffs and vibrant synergies!

SUPRIYA NAGARAJAN LULLABY OSLO Lullabies from all over the world in Oslo. The British-Indian vocalist and composer Supriya Nagajaran is taking her “Lullaby Oslo” project to Ultima. She has researched and collected a broad selection of lullabies from different cultures, areas and nationalities represented in Oslo and recorded the local population that sings them. Along with field recordings from the urban and countryside surrounds of Oslo, these voices provide the raw material for this installation and performance.

IGNAS KRUNGLEVICIUS RIOT (INSTALLATION) Consciousness spreads to fill the available space, according to the Oslo-based Lithuanian artist, Ignas Krunglevicius. In this sound installation, he tries to produce a type of unity that has not previously existed. Krunglevicius, who was born in Lithuania in 1979, is also a painter and composer. He works with installations, performance and film as well as music. The installation is a part of the Ultimafestivalen and may also be experienced on September 15 and 17 in Hvelvet at Sentralen.

KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN STERNKLANG Karlheinz Stockhausen composed the magnificent Sternklang in 1971. The piece was called “park music for five groups” and may take up to three hours. It will be performed at five sign-posted “stops” in Ekeberg Sculpture Park. The public may move freely between the stops, paving the way for multiple experiences as the work unfolds. Featuring Nordic Voices with Andreas Fischer and students from the Norwegian Academy of Music. In cooperation with the Norwegian Academy of Music and Ekeberg Park.

NyMusikk uses the piano in the Østbanehallen, but instead of holding a traditional concert, the piano has been turned into an installation. Sit down at the piano and create completely new sounds! The piano will be modified with many different bits and bobs and, in combination with live electronics, the piano will create some sounds by itself!

Ivan Mazuze and his quintet present progressive African jazz at its best. The melodies are inspired by South African music mixed with modern percussion tradition. Deeply anchored in jazz’s harmony and with a rhythm section consisting of electric bass, guitar and acoustic piano as the foundation, Mazuze improvises in a landscape that moves between jazz and the African urban sound landscape.

Live Jukebox is a camper van that has been modified to create a mobile concert stage. The Norwegian Soloists’ Choir was established in 1950 with the aim of being an elite ensemble with the artistic goal of performing choir music and has a unique position in Norwegian cultural life.

Experience #etlittannerledesorkester from the inside and sit with us in the orchestra while we practice. We will practice in the Levinsalen from 12 noon to 2 pm. The entertainment orchestra consists of young professional musicians from the Norwegian Academy of Music and Barratt Due Music Institute. Our orchestra is a little bit different with an integrated band and vocalists. A maximum of 25 places in the orchestra, but everyone can access the room.

9 pm: DANIELA REYES Reyes combines the innocent with the powerful in her honest acoustic performance. With the use of a loop station she creates a broad soundscape and a childlike, but reflective, universe. 10 pm: AVA Ava is an artist and songwriter from Northern Norway, who grew up in Østfold county. Over many years as a live artist, she has developed her own unique musical expression, founded on the singer/songwriter tradition. This evening she is accompanied by a full band!

Palace of Pleasure released their debut album “Release the pleasure” on their own label in 1996, after a few years in smoke-filled rehearsal rooms. The album received a lot of positive coverage in the music press and POP played at Quart Festival the same year, where the band bribed Massive Attack vocalist Nicolette with local moonshine from Trøndelag so that she included them on her “DJ:kicks” CD the following year. The band has an enthusiastic fan base and won the Spellemann prize for best dance album and the single Love-hate 10-0 was A-listed by the Petre radio station.

HVASKJER is a new addition to Oslo Culture. We are the Culture House Soria Moria at Torshov and the following artists are proud to contribute to Oslo Culture Night 2016 :

SINDRI is best known as the front man of Dog Almighty. He is often compared with artists such as Jeff Buckley, Tool and Seigmen. Sindri sounds like a complete symphony orchestra even though it is just him with an acoustic guitar on stage. He also has Luis Landa Schreitt with him on percussion and the eminent artist Kråker.

SUNSETS GROOVE consists of Emilio Grueso from Spain (keyboard), Carlos Steinmann from Mexico (guitar), Javier Albarrán from Spain (bass) and Luis Landa-Schreitt from Honduras/Germany (drums). They play their own instrumental music compositions: groovy funk/soul with a hint of flamenco mixed in.

GURO is 24 year old Guro Marstad from Melhus. With one foot in Trøndelag and one in American soul, Guro has created her own genre of trønder soul! She is now releasing her first solo record in connection with Culture Night at Hvaskjer, which was recorded at Stable Studios in Oslo and produced by Leif Johansen (A-ha, Phenomena, Rita Eriksen).

LUDVIG is a band that was established by the composer and songwriter Truls Ludvig Johnsen (Tuba Tuba, Kåre K trio) in the summer of 2011. The music may be described as a variation on folk/pop, with captivating melodies and complex arrangements.

The chairs will be removed and replaced with cushions and mattresses in the intimate Capella Johannea in Majorstuen church. Video projectors aimed at the roof provide live visuals accompanied by ambient electronic music. For four hours, the public can come and go, lie down, listen and watch the movement up on the dome roof. Come and experience Oslo’s hidden gem! The choir plays an important role as nearly everything in the service is sung. “Magnificat” (Mary’s hymn of praise) and “Nunc Dimittis” (Simeon’s Song of Praise), psalter psalms and alternative prayers are also sung. St Edmund’s Church in Møllergata was designed by Paul Due in Neo-Gothic style and erected in 1883-84. The church will be open to visitors from 5 - 7 pm.

6.30 pm - St. Hallvard boys’ choir will perform in Grønland Church. There will be a choir procession from Grønland to Akershus Castle Church. At 8 pm, the choir will sing in the Castle Church of Akershus Fortress. You will hear Pablo Casal’s composition of thanksgiving, Salve Montserratina , which he wrote at the convent in Montserrat after hiding there during the war. The piece is a beautiful elaboration on the well- known Gregorian hymn, Salve Regina . You will also hear celebrated pieces such as Mozart’s Ave Verum and Alta Trinita .

9 pm: PÅL ANGELSKÅR IN CONCERT Angelskår (born in 1973) is best known as a vocalist, guitarist and songwriter with the band Minor Majority. Songs such as Dancing in the backyard, She Gave Me Away and Come Back to Me were part of defining the 2000s within Norwegian music. Angelskår has released two solo records and his is a distinct voice at the interface between folk and pop/rock.

Torshov Transit Reception Centre – how does the built-up environment affect an asylum seekers’ stay in a reception centre?

In 2015, over 31,000 asylum seekers sought asylum in Norway. Is there a connection between the architecture surrounding asylum seekers and identity, a sense of security, policy and legislation? Asylum seekers constantly experience being moved around. Temporary transit accommodation may end up being for such a long time that it is experienced as permanent. How can architects contribute to finding new ways to meet asylum seekers’ needs in this period? Torshov Transit Reception Centre is one of 10 places around the world presented in the exhibition “Om å komme til” (On arriving to…). The exhibition is a part of Oslo Architecture Triennale 2016. She loves being alone and undisturbed in front of the loom – in order to touch, reflect on and be close to soft, pure natural materials. Treasures of the area’s rich social history are revealed within a few hundred metres around Storgata. This was the location of the prison, the labour house Prindsen, the hospital for the poor, Krohgstøtten, a poorhouse for the elderly, various food centres and private charities. Oslo city archives take you on a walk through the history of the poor. The last stop is Prindsen, which retains the factory buildings and main house as it was in 1900. There will be refreshments and an opportunity to sit down. The city walk lasts about 1½ hours and there is an open house from 7 pm. The event is organized in cooperation with Omsorgsbygg and the tenants in Storgata 36.

In connection with the construction of the new Follo railway, NIKU has carried out archaeological excavation work in the medieval layers of the old town, Gamlebyen. In the spring of 2016 school children from Oslo helped them investigate the ground. The pupils made many exciting finds. The objects they found are 700-800 years old, and are exhibited in the adjacent wing of the Ladegården manor house. Archaeologists from NIKU give tours of the exhibition and will talk about their work in medieval Oslo. Maximum number of visitors at a time is 25.

From St. Hanshaugen there is a good view of the city hall and the fjords, and it is a good place to comment on the names of Oslo’s environs. The tour continues down Bergstien to Old Aker Church where the origin of the name Aker can be found. Then we walk down the historic hill of Telthusbakken before ending up on the banks of the Akerselva River. Along the way we comment on street names and put them into a historic context. We are constantly being fed information from all over the globe at all times. Something is always happening that requires engagement, more information and more discussion. A high-speed creative process does not have much room for anything other than being effective and honest. All four works are performed in one show. The dance collective is an artistic collective that organizes dance performances on non-traditional stages in terms of dance.

The University of Oslo (UiO) is delighted to invite you to a guided tour of the Observatory. The Observatory is among UiO’s oldest buildings and is now restored and appears in all its glory as it was around 1840. The observatory is used today for Science education for pupils of Oslo schools. During the guided tour you will hear the history of how important the Observatory was during Norway’s nation building period. The tour takes an hour approx. Note that there is only place for 30 people per guided tour and it is on a first come, first served basis. Recommended age limit: 6 years (but suits adults best)

5 pm: Per Vigeland’s glass paintings set to words and music With the Biblical texts that inspired the artist and musical illustrations from the organist Bjørn Kleppe. Per Vigeland completed the glass paintings in the period from 1947-1962.

6 pm: This is what the church and the chapel could have been like – unrealised plans for architecture and art. The church was built in 1907 after an architecture competition. What would it have looked like if the other suggestions had been chosen? The chapel was built on in 1939. But there have also been other plans for the chapel. Today Per Vigeland’s glass paintings adorn the church. In between the wars, quite different plans for its adornment were being considered. Besides, there is the mystery of a Henrik Sørensen painting that went missing. With Jardar Seim.

LECTURE BY CÉSAR AIRA Norah Lange, who had Norwegian roots, was a central player of the Argentinian literary avant garde in the 20s and 30s, in a milieu inhabited by greats such as Jorge Luis Borges and Horacio Quiroga. Lange was a pioneer and an innovator within Argentinian prose. But how does her work read today? César Aira is one of the major stars in Argentinian literature’s constellation. Listen to him tell the story of an authorship he holds in high esteem. Introduced by Kjartan Fløgstad.

7.30: A THOUSAND AND ONE CATS. TOR ÅGE BRINGSVÆRD ON CATS Lecture with Tor Åge Bringsværd. The cat is the only “domestic animal” that has never been tamed. He has stoked our imagination. No other animal has set such deep pawmarks on human history; or been the object of so much love and hate, respect and fear, imagination and superstition. In his new book, 1001 cats, author Tor Åge Bringsværd sticks his paw into a veritable sea of feline traditions – myths, fables and fairy tales form all eras and from all corners of the world. 9 pm: OPEN MIC WITH LARS HAGA RAAVAND In the basement of the House of Literature, we turn on the microphone for those who would like to read a novel extract, prose poetry, diary notes, or perhaps song lyrics with or without guitar accompaniment? This is the place for emerging writers and those who have been on the circuit for a while and would like to try something new.

The evening is led by poet Lars Haga Raavand. To date he has released two books, poetry and prose collection Hvalfall fom 2012 and the poetry collection, Skoggangssang . His latest work is Vannsikt in which he etches three sisters’ lives.

Nitter has previously been admitted to Blakstad psychiatric hospital.
