10Th ANNIVERSARY PRODUCTION 10th ANNIVERSARY PRODUCTION starring TIM MATHESON Mary Moody Northen Arena Stage March 2-14 1 Cf~ v l·O·t·h • A·N·N· A Note to our Patrons As the new Director of Theatre at St . Edward's University, I welcome you to the Tenth Anniversary Celebration of the theatre program. I am extremely excited and proud to be a part of such a truly colorful and suc cessful program . The philosophy of our program is dualistic in nature. It embraces the responsibility of providing its students with the basic training, education and experiences necessary for the pursuit of potential theatre careers in either professional, educational or community theatres. Secondly, the theatre embraces the responsibility of providing its students with the knowledge and abilities to live full, rewarding and productive lives in a world society of ever increasing complexity. The dual nature of the thea tre program seeks to develop and graduate student artists who are sensi tive, a-ware and total human beings. Our program is grounded in classroom training as well as performance, observation and association with theatre professionals. We will continue to pring guest artists from the world of professional theatre to appear on stage with faculty and students. We believe that by exposing our stu dents to qualified professionals in production and by providing them with demanding but exciting and meaningful classroom training and ex perience, we can come closest to realizing our stated philosophy. To accomplish our goal, we will need the continued support of all of you who have been so generous with your time, energy and contribu tions, but more than this, it is imperative that we increase the base of our support. We extend an invitation to all of you to become more active ly involved in the important and exciting work of the next ten years. Donald W. Seay Director of Theatre 1·V·E·R·S·A·R· Y A Brief History Austin's first theatre south of Town Lake and St. Edward's Universi ty's first real theatre celebrates its tenth anniversary this month. Over 60 guest artists have appeared in more than 75 productions at the Mary Moody Northen Arena Stage since it opened in March 1972 with William Shatner in "Does a Tiger Wear A Necktie?" The theatre, named for philanthropist Mrs. Mary Moody Northen, has become a familiar landmark on its South Austin hilltop, standing nor theast of the St. Edward's Administration Building and commanding one of the most picturesque views of the city from its glassed in foyer. It was built with a grant from the Moody Foundation. Since its opening it has featured among others such guest artists as Mercedes McCambridge, Pat O'Brien, Pernell Roberts, Stefanie Powers, and Leonard Nimoy. The man most responsible for the founding of the Mary Moody Nor then Arena Stage and the St. Edward's University Theatre Program is Edward Mangum, former chairman and now a professor in the theatre arts program. Mangum was also responsible for co-founding the famous Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. After joining the SEU faculty in 1965, Mangum developed and taught the first theatre arts class at St. Edward's. When the theatre program fi nally got under way, there were 20 students enrolled . Since that time the theatre arts program at St. Edward's has become a nationally known in stitution, and the program now draws over 100 majors annually. The program, because of its visibility, also attracts other students who are not theatre arts majors. Founder Mangum and the current theatre arts staff, headed by Direc tor Donald Seay, feel many theatre students have been attracted by the guest artist aspect of the St. Edward's theatre program. St. Edward's is one of only a few universities in the nation which offers students theatre training on campus with regularly scheduled guest artists from stage, film & television. With the experience and proud heritage of the past ten years, St. Ed ward's faculty, staff and students and members of the surrounding Austin community have just reason to anticipate and look forward to a second decade of even greater progress and success. 3 About the Star: Tim Matheson, after scoring his biggest screen success in the smash hit comedy, "National Lampoon's Animal House," comes to St. Edward's in the front ranks of the film industry's young leading men. A native of Los Angeles, Mr. Matheson began acting at the age of 12, appearing in the television series "My Three Sons ." Mathe son attended Cal State University as a psy- chology major before deciding to pursue an acting career as an adult and going on to study at the Actors' and Directors' Lab in Hollywood. He has appeared on the stage in "Macbeth" and has also played Romeo in "Romeo and Juliet." Other stage credits include "Spoon River Anthology" and Albert Camus' "Caligula:' Matheson's television credits include the shows "Bo nanza," "Medical Center" and "Ironside" as well as a number of series and TV movies of the week . Movies include "Yours, Mine and Ours," "Divorce, American Style," "How To Commit Marriage," Clint Eastwood's "Magnum Force," "1941," and "A Little Sex :' St. Edward's University and the Mary Moody Northen Arena Stage welcomes this young versatile actor who has proven himself adept in handling a wide range of roles from Shakespeare to the best of contemporary comedy. About the Director: Edward Mangum, one of Austin's most distinguished and popular directors, is the man most responsible for the founding of the Mary Moody Northen Arena -Stage and the St. Edward's University Theatre Pro gram. As a theatre director, producer, pro fessor, author, lecturer and consultant in Europe, he came to St. Edward's in 1965 with an impressive background of credits to his name. In theatre history, he is listed as a co-founder of the original Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. So successful was his work there that drama critic Ernie Schier praised him as the "finest director in the arena theatre in this country." His world travels, under the sponsorship of the American National Theatre and Academy in New York, have taken him to 25 countries . Mr. Mangum ma jored in speech and drama at Catholic University under the direction of New York Times ' critic Walter Kerr. After coming to St. Edward's he initiated the first theatre courses within the curriculum and built a program which became recog nized nationally for its unique approach to learning theatre . Mr. Mangum's professional directing experiences have included productions starring Pernell Roberts, Pat O'Brien, Linda Darnell, John Carradine, Mercedes McCambridge, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and many others . 4 ST. A Note from the Director The production you are about to see of William Shakespeare's THE TAMING OF THE SHREW tries to recapture the spirit of fun and frolic that so many Elizabethan plays possess. Tonight we want you to watch and enjoy the kind of performance so many of our long -dead ancestors watched and enjoyed so many centuries ago in town squares, on nearby meadows and, as in this case , in the gre ?t hall of some medieval patron 's mansion. Our actors are therefore Strolling Players, fresh from the road and another performance , ready to share their love of playing with you the guests of some worthy Lord and Lady with whom you have just dined . Receive us ; therefore, in that spirit as we unfold the wild , tempestuous story of a lusty lover who woos and wins an equally lusty wife in this fine tale known world-wide. Enjoy! • NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions by Ned Hémard
NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard Bonanza in the Big Easy Born in Ottawa, Canada, to Russian Jewish immigrants, this actor appeared as Monsieur Mercier in the 1958 Paramount Pictures film, The Buccaneer (which embellishes the role of Jean Lafitte (Yul Brynner) in helping Andrew Jackson (Charlton Heston) win the Battle of New Orleans. After a long and successful run in a weekly television series, this actor also reigned as Bacchus during the 1985 New Orleans Mardi Gras season. If the reader has not guessed by now, the actor mentioned above is Lorne Greene (the patriarch Ben Cartwright, star of Bonanza). The fictional setting for the show (according to the premiere episode's storyline) is a 600,000-acre ranch on the shores of Lake Tahoe known as the Ponderosa. Nestled high in the Sierra Nevada, with a large ranch house in its center, the Ponderosa spread is bigger than Don Corleone’s compound (also on Lake Tahoe), where the elaborate First Communion party scenes were filmed for The Godfather Part II. Ben Cartwright is said to have built the original, smaller homestead after moving from New Orleans with his pregnant third wife Marie de Marigny (that’s right, just like the Faubourg) and his two sons, Adam and Hoss (played by Pernell Roberts and Dan Blocker). The grown Adam designed the later sprawling ranch house as depicted on TV. The Ponderosa was roughly a two-hour ride on horseback from Virginia City, Nevada. Most people believe that the inspiration for the name Ponderosa was the great number of Ponderosa pines in the area, but it could’ve been taken from the Latin for large and ponderous in size.

  • Bonanza' Ranch Rides Into Pop Culture Sunset
Powered by SAVE THIS | EMAIL THIS | Close 'Bonanza' ranch rides into pop culture sunset INCLINE VILLAGE, Nevada (Reuters) -- A great symbol of the rugged old West, or at least as it was portrayed by Hollywood, is riding off into the sunset. The Ponderosa Ranch, an American West theme park where the television show "Bonanza" was filmed, closed Sunday after its sale to a financier whose plans for the property are unclear. The show, which ran on NBC from 1959 to 1973, was the top-rated U.S. program in the mid-1960s. Before the park closed, it was easy with a little imagination to feel transported there to a time when the American West was still a place to be tamed. Wranglers and a Stetson were proper attire. A sign outside the Silver Dollar Saloon welcomed ladies and not just the ones who earn a living upstairs. Fans of the long-running "Bonanza," which still airs on cable television, may recall Little Joe and Hoss getting the horses ready while Ben Cartwright yells from his office to see if the boys were doing what they were told in the 1860s West. "The house is the part I recognize -- the fireplace, the dining room, his office, the kitchen," said Oliver Barmann, 38, from Hessen, Germany, who visited the 570-acre grounds a week before the Ponderosa Ranch closed. "It's a pity it is closing," he said as his wife, Silvia, nodded in agreement. The property with postcard views of Lake Tahoe along Nevada's border with California became a theme park in the late 1960s, after the color-filmed scenes of "Bonanza"-- a first for a Western TV show in its day -- became part of American television lore.
