10th ANNIVERSARY PRODUCTION starring TIM MATHESON Mary Moody Northen Arena Stage March 2-14 1 Cf~ v l·O·t·h • A·N·N· A Note to our Patrons As the new Director of Theatre at St . Edward's University, I welcome you to the Tenth Anniversary Celebration of the theatre program. I am extremely excited and proud to be a part of such a truly colorful and suc cessful program . The philosophy of our program is dualistic in nature. It embraces the responsibility of providing its students with the basic training, education and experiences necessary for the pursuit of potential theatre careers in either professional, educational or community theatres. Secondly, the theatre embraces the responsibility of providing its students with the knowledge and abilities to live full, rewarding and productive lives in a world society of ever increasing complexity. The dual nature of the thea tre program seeks to develop and graduate student artists who are sensi tive, a-ware and total human beings. Our program is grounded in classroom training as well as performance, observation and association with theatre professionals. We will continue to pring guest artists from the world of professional theatre to appear on stage with faculty and students. We believe that by exposing our stu dents to qualified professionals in production and by providing them with demanding but exciting and meaningful classroom training and ex perience, we can come closest to realizing our stated philosophy. To accomplish our goal, we will need the continued support of all of you who have been so generous with your time, energy and contribu tions, but more than this, it is imperative that we increase the base of our support. We extend an invitation to all of you to become more active ly involved in the important and exciting work of the next ten years. Donald W. Seay Director of Theatre 1·V·E·R·S·A·R· Y A Brief History Austin's first theatre south of Town Lake and St. Edward's Universi ty's first real theatre celebrates its tenth anniversary this month. Over 60 guest artists have appeared in more than 75 productions at the Mary Moody Northen Arena Stage since it opened in March 1972 with William Shatner in "Does a Tiger Wear A Necktie?" The theatre, named for philanthropist Mrs. Mary Moody Northen, has become a familiar landmark on its South Austin hilltop, standing nor theast of the St. Edward's Administration Building and commanding one of the most picturesque views of the city from its glassed in foyer. It was built with a grant from the Moody Foundation. Since its opening it has featured among others such guest artists as Mercedes McCambridge, Pat O'Brien, Pernell Roberts, Stefanie Powers, and Leonard Nimoy. The man most responsible for the founding of the Mary Moody Nor then Arena Stage and the St. Edward's University Theatre Program is Edward Mangum, former chairman and now a professor in the theatre arts program. Mangum was also responsible for co-founding the famous Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. After joining the SEU faculty in 1965, Mangum developed and taught the first theatre arts class at St. Edward's. When the theatre program fi nally got under way, there were 20 students enrolled . Since that time the theatre arts program at St. Edward's has become a nationally known in stitution, and the program now draws over 100 majors annually. The program, because of its visibility, also attracts other students who are not theatre arts majors. Founder Mangum and the current theatre arts staff, headed by Direc tor Donald Seay, feel many theatre students have been attracted by the guest artist aspect of the St. Edward's theatre program. St. Edward's is one of only a few universities in the nation which offers students theatre training on campus with regularly scheduled guest artists from stage, film & television. With the experience and proud heritage of the past ten years, St. Ed ward's faculty, staff and students and members of the surrounding Austin community have just reason to anticipate and look forward to a second decade of even greater progress and success. 3 About the Star: Tim Matheson, after scoring his biggest screen success in the smash hit comedy, "National Lampoon's Animal House," comes to St. Edward's in the front ranks of the film industry's young leading men. A Note from the Director The production you are about to see of William Shakespeare's THE TAMING OF THE SHREW tries to recapture the spirit of fun and frolic that so many Elizabethan plays possess. Tonight we want you to watch and enjoy the kind of performance so many of our long -dead ancestors watched and enjoyed so many centuries ago in town squares, on nearby meadows and, as in this case , in the gre ?t hall of some medieval patron 's mansion. Our actors are therefore Strolling Players, fresh from the road and another performance , ready to share their love of playing with you the guests of some worthy Lord and Lady with whom you have just dined . Receive us ; therefore, in that spirit as we unfold the wild , tempestuous story of a lusty lover who woos and wins an equally lusty wife in this fine tale known world-wide. Enjoy!
