The West Wing Weekly 1.22: What Kind of Day Has It Been [Intro Music] HRISHI: You’re listening the The West Wing Weekly, I’m Hrishikesh Hirway JOSH: ..and I’m Joshua Malina HRISHI: Today, we’re talking about the finale of season one JOSH: Woo! HRISHI: It’s episode 22, and it’s called ‘What kind of day has it been’. JOSH: It was written by Aaron Sorkin, it was directed by Tommy Schlamme, and it originally aired on May 17th, in the year 2000. HRISHI: Here’s a synopsis.. JOSH: A hrynopsis? HRISHI: [laughs] Sure.. JOSH: I just wanted to make sure because, you know, it’s an important distinction. HRISHI: An American fighter jet goes down in Iraq, and a rescue mission ensues to find the pilot. But, it’s a covert operation, so CJ has to mislead the press. Toby’s brother is onboard the space shuttle Columbia, but it’s having mechanical difficulties and can’t land. Plus, Josh has to meet with the Vice President to bring him around to the Bartlet administration's plans for campaign finance. President Bartlet travels to Rosalind, Virginia, to speak at the Newseum and give a live town hall meeting. But as they’re exiting, S#&* goes down and shots ring out. JOSH: Well done HRISHI: Before we even get into the episode though, Josh, I want to ask you about the title. ‘What kind of day has it been’ is a very Sorkin title, it’s been the finale for lots of things that he’s done before.

SXSW FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2018 FEATURES AND OPENING NIGHT FILM A QUIET PLACE Film Festival Celebrates 25th Edition Austin, Texas, January 31, 2018 – The South by Southwest® (SXSW®) Conference and Festivals announced the features lineup and opening night film for the 25th edition of the Film Festival, running March 9-18, 2018 in Austin, Texas. The acclaimed program draws thousands of fans, filmmakers, press, and industry leaders every year to immerse themselves in the most innovative, smart and entertaining new films of the year. During the nine days of SXSW 132 features will be shown, with additional titles yet to be announced. The full lineup will include 44 films from first-time filmmakers, 86 World Premieres, 11 North American Premieres and 5 U.S. Premieres. These films were selected from 2,458 feature-length film submissions, with a total of 8,160 films submitted this year. “2018 marks the 25th edition of the SXSW Film Festival and my tenth year at the helm. This episode first aired on December 15th, 2004. HRISHI: Two episodes ago, in episode 6:07, the title was “A Change is Gonna Come,” and I think in this episode the changes arrive. JOSH: Aaaahhh. HRISHI: The President goes to China, but he is severely impaired by his MS. Charlie pushes C.J. to consider her next step after she steps out of the White House, and Josh considers his next step after it turns out Donna has already considered what her next step will be. JOSH: Indeed. HRISHI: Later in this episode we’re going to be joined by Ben Murray who made his debut on The West Wing in the last episode. He plays Curtis, the president’s new personal assistant to replace Charlie. JOSH: A man who has held Martin Sheen in his arms. I mean, I’ve done that off camera, but he did it on television. Will my imagination soar with possibilities or should I give into the gnawing, addictive urge to watch just one more episode? Will I enjoy it? Or will I, in a foggy state of addictive exhaustion, only take in half of the complicated plot points? If this is the modern conundrum for today’s viewers, then what does it mean for today’s screenwriters? How does this glut of instantly available serial content affect the way we write serial drama? In the last twenty years, there has been a revolution in viewing practices. Broadcast executives have been slowly de-throned as digital advances make viewing serial television a democratic, individualised, multi-platform and frequently illegal practice.
