Sports & Esports the Competitive Dream Team
SPORTS & ESPORTS THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM JULIANA KORANTENG Editor-in-Chief/Founder MediaTainment Finance (UK) SPORTS & ESPORTS: THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM 1.THE CROSSOVER: WHAT TRADITIONAL SPORTS CAN BRING TO ESPORTS Professional football, soccer, baseball and motor racing have endless decades worth of experience in professionalising, commercialising and monetising sporting activities. In fact, professional-services powerhouse KPMG estimates that the business of traditional sports, including commercial and amateur events, related media as well as education, academic, grassroots and other ancillary activities, is a US$700bn international juggernaut. Furthermore, the potential crossover with esports makes sense. A host of popular video games have traditional sports for themes. Soccer-centric games include EA’s FIFA series and Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer. NBA 2K, a series of basketball simulation games published by a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, influenced the formation of the groundbreaking NBA 2K League in professional esports. EA is also behind the Madden NFL series plus the NHL, NBA, FIFA and UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) games franchises. Motor racing has influenced the narratives in Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo from Sony Interactive Entertainment, while Psyonix’s Rocket League melds soccer and motor racing. SPORTS & ESPORTS THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM SPORTS & ESPORTS: THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM In some ways, it isn’t too much of a stretch to see why traditional sports should appeal to the competitive streaks in gamers. Not all those games, several of which are enjoyed by solitary players, might necessarily translate well into the head-to-head combat formats associated with esports and its millions of live-venue and online spectators. -

STRONGMAN HISTORY There is no better way to begin a complete guide to strongman than with the history and origin of the sport itself. On some level strongman has existed as long as man has existed. Humans have always had to lift rocks and logs, or carry loads of wheat or wood on their back etc. Further down the line in history we had to move ships by rowing with oars on a boat, or pull heavy loads with ropes. Human strength in its rawest most functional form has always been important for our survival. Ancient stories of strongman like Samson in the bible and the Greek myth of Hercules has captivated us for centuries. -

Mobalytics Raises $11.25M Series a to Build World's Best Personal Gaming Assistant
Mobalytics Raises $11.25M Series A to build world’s best personal gaming assistant LOS ANGELES, July 22nd, 2020 -- Mobalytics (mobalytics.gg), personal gaming assistant and analytics platform dedicated to helping video game fans master their favorite titles, announced it has raised $11.25 million Series A led by Almaz Capital and Cabra VC. The other investors participating in the round include HP Tech Ventures, General Catalyst, GGV Capital, RRE Ventures, Axiomatic and T1 Esports. With the influx of capital, Mobalytics will expand into further development of its gaming assistant through better analytics and personalization. They will also continue to fulfill their original goal of expanding their product offerings into new games. The company plans to increase its engineering force, and hire additional product experts in the next six months. Mobalytics won TechCrunch Disrupt in 2016 and then launched their first private beta for League of Legends (LoL). One of the most popular games globally, LoL has more than 115M monthly active players who had an estimated spend of $1.5B in 2019. They have expanded beyond LoL and built resources to assist players in four different game genres: MOBA’s (League of Legends), Auto-battlers (Teamfight Tactics), Trading Card Games (Legends of Runeterra) and First Person Shooters (Valorant). “Our team has spent countless hours building and testing the GPI (Gamer Performance Index), which allows us to analyze a player’s performance by building a robust understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. This means players get better at their favorite games,” said Bogdan Suchyk, founder and co-CEO/Warchief of Product at Mobalytics. -
2010Year-In-Review
Mission The USAWA was formed to continue the long standing tradition of old-time weightlifters like Eugen Sandow, Louis Cyr, Arthur Saxon, Hermann Goerner, Warren Lincoln Travis, and many others. We strive to preserve the history of the original forms of weightlifting, which in the past has been referred to as ―odd lifting‖. Many of the lifts we perform are based on stage acts or challenge lifts of old-time strongmen. History The USAWA was organized in 1987 and was a charter member of the International All-Round Weightlifting Association. The USAWA has over 150 recognized lifts and 8000 plus records, so any strength athlete can find their niche. We have a drug testing program to encourage drug free lifting. Numerous local meets and a National competition are held each year to find true ―all-round‖ weightlifters. THE LABOR OF PLAY: THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF COMPUTER GAME CULTURE by Justin S. Schumaker A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee August 2018 ABSTRACT THE LABOR OF PLAY: THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF COMPUTER GAME CULTURE by Justin S. Schumaker The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2018 Under the Supervision of the Professor Stuart Moulthrop This dissertation questions the relationship between computer game culture and ideologies of neoliberalism and financialization. It questions the role computer games play in cultivating neoliberal practices and how the industry develops games and systems making play and work indistinguishable activities. Chapter 1 examines how computer game inculcate players into neoliberal practice through play. In chapter 2, the project shows Blizzard Entertainment systematically redevelops their games to encourage perpetual play aimed at increasing the consumption of digital commodities and currencies.
