E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT There are few pieces of wooden architecture heritage remaining in Central Russia today, but in the past wooden construction flourished there and had a rich tradition. Recent research of Moscow Oblast wooden architecture reveals an almost unstudied field in the history of architecture. Wooden churches of Central Russia have unique architectural and constructive features, which distinguish them from the well-studied wooden churches of Northern Russia. On the example of three studied objects, the article reviews the typology, specifics of architectural forms, techniques of façade finishing, and coloring. The article provides insight into the architectural, artistic and stylistic features of Central Russian wooden church architecture. They have unusual framing designs. Thick bars were connected at right angles, while in the Russian North it was typical to connect window bars at an oblique angle [5]. On the façade, the bars framing the windows were painted to resemble marble. It is the first time when we find such an approach to the decorative design of details in wooden architecture. In addition, it turned out that the existing upper octagonal tier is the result of rebuilding. The original octagon was larger. The lower round of logs of the Fig. 1. At the same time, the simple forms and modest decor introduced at a later stage of construction, showing the influence of the Classicist trends [3]. As the surveys showed, the church initially had no chapel. Before the Nikolsky chapel was built, there apparently was a gallery where now the chapel altar is. Its roof left a straight mark on the southern wall of the cube. Nikolsky chapel was apparently built after the rundown Nikolskaya Church in the Oshakovsky churchyard was closed and its parish transferred to Sushkovo [4]. The identical angular log joints of both altars indicate that the structure of the chapel belongs to the earliest construction stages of the studied object. Fig. 2. It is located to the northeast of the Lake Onego, surrounding the rather lar- ge Lake Vodlozero – one of the four largest water reservoirs in southern Karelia (Northwest Russia). The watershed between the two lakes forms a natural eastern border of the region. From the south and north its borders were defined by the settlement areas of the Russians, who identified themselves as “Vodlozery”, i.e. inhabitants of Vodlozerie and not any other historical or cultural province.1 Interestingly, the region’s remoteness from cultural and economic centers had more influence on its development in modern times than during Middle Ages. A sys- tem of Vodlozerie settlements within the borders of “boyarshchina” – feudal lands of Novgorod people – existed here and was well documented in the cadastral sources as early as in the middle of the 16th century, and furthermore it was preserved almost unchanged up until the 20th century. Since the 18th century the region has become more and more isolated. The reason for this isolation is believed to be the shift of the trade routes towards the new capital of Saint Petersburg as well as the almost complete absence of roads.2 Indeed, there were never built any asphalt roads leading to the Vodlozero region. The settlements were mostly located on the islands in Lake 1 Valentina Kuznecova, Boris Putilov, ed., Pamâtniki russkogo folʹklora Vodlozerʹâ: Predaniâ i bylički (Pertozavodsk 1997), 105–106, 107–110, 111.

In the second part of the study, the authors examine the development of the public education system from the end of the 1840 to 1864. In solving research problems, both general scientific methods (concretization and generalization) and traditional methods of historical analysis were used. The authors used the historical-situational method, which involves the study of historical facts in the context of the era in conjunction with the “neighboring” events and facts.

  • Traditions of Lay Orthodoxy in the Russian North
Religion, State & Society, Vo!. 28, No. 1, 2000 Traditions of Lay Orthodoxy in the Russian North SERGEI FILATOV & ROMAN LUNKIN History books and political propaganda have taught us to think about Russian culture in geographical terms, as something that is an integrated whole. Political develop ment over the past few years under the banner of 'federalism' has led to a number of political and economic declarations about the diversity of the regions, but behind all these declarations there are short-term economic interests connected with the avail ability or absence of resources, the varying depth of the economic crisis and the level of political ambition of regional politicians. More often than not we remain unaware of the fundamental diversity of historical background and of the resulting diversity of culture, mentality, religiosity and socio-political orientation. Despite this, and even given the unitary and centralised nature of Muscovite power, the historical memory of Tver', Saratov, Vladivostok or the North-West varies considerably. Holy Rus', on whose land walked hundreds of heroes of the faith, where to this day every little town has its ancient churches, where great icon painters laboured, where our ancient history took place, where the Russian people suffered from the Tatar yoke and lived through the Times of Troubles of the seven teenth century, is but a relatively small part of our homeland. A slightly bigger area is formed by the territory where there were aristocratic estates (some of which survive to this day in continued decline), which were the hearth of classical Russian culture of the nineteenth century.

Výstavní část nabízí dlouhodobé výstavy ve významných kulturních institucích (některé trvající až 4 měsíce), druhá část festivalová pak trvá asi týden a nabídne další aktivity - divadelní, filmové, hudební, přednáškové … Údaje o výzkumech v Rusku a objevených předmětech byly převzaty z novějších ruskojazyčných vědeckých publikací. Práce usiluje o moderní chápání přítomnosti severských přistěhovalců. Jejím výsledkem je uznání Seveřanů jako trvalých obyvatel v několika ekonomických centrech zároveň s ugrofinskou a slovanskou populací. Klíčová slova Skandinávie, severozápadní Rusko, archeologické nálezy, obchodnicko-řemeslnická centra, raný středověk Abstract This work is devoted to the contacts between North-Western Rus’ and Scandinavia in the early Middle Ages.
