The lobster and the crab one day Proposed a friendly race. Agreed upon the time were they, Agreed upon the place. The start and finish lines were where The two thought they should be. The crayfish with a clock was there To act as referee. And though the rule-book then was read, Not all was clarified; For as the lobster forward sped The crab went to the side. By Jeffrey Krise

3 BROUGH PARISH COUNCIL. Our March meeting was held on Thursday 19th, 1. Matters arising from the Minutes of our last meeting. a). Easter Rally 2020, Cancelled, due to the Covid~19 outbreak. We hope 2021 will be a better year and we can give a contribution to this popular event b). Cllr. Henderson reported that work to improve and extend the footpath at Musgrave Lane has been carried out, with the help of Jackson Builders and John Pattinson who provided the road planning's for it. Cllrs. Brocklehurst and Henderson were thanked for their contributions too. 2. Reports from our District and County Councillors. Cllr. Simpkins reported that EDC was minimizing the number of meetings, plus the number of councillors attending and the length of time taken to conduct business, All measures to try to reduce the risks posed by Covid~19. Cllr. Dew, CCC reported on the 2020 Appleby Horse Fair. It has not yet been cancelled, but advice is likely to state it should not be held. Resurfacing work is to be carried out on the A66 at the Appleby Bypass and Temple Sowerby, during the summer, which may be disruptive. He asked about local arrangements for supporting vulnerable people through the Covid~19 outbreak.Cllr. Elwood sought clarification for matters regarding Newton Rigg College. 3. Recycling Centre. Work has started and it is hoped it will be up and running before our next meeting. Karen McSkimming has been commissioned to do the artwork, featuring "Recycling Rosie the Sheep". This will launch the new site. 4. Devolution of Assets. The transfer of Jubilee Gardens will finally take place on April 1st. The possible devolution of the Public Conveniences were discussed at great length. Agreed repairs and maintenance have not been done, and now only some of it has been promised. EDC's position has since changed ,Council all agreed this was unacceptable. If we were to take on responsibility for the toilets, it would almost double our yearly precept, by adding a further £12,000 to our costs. These toilets are well used, but not primarily by locals. We agreed that the transfer of the Public Conveniences was not in Brough’s best interests. EDC will be asked, by us, to explain its plans for the future of these Public Conven- iences. We also agreed that the Play Area was best remaining in the ownership of EDC 5).Land at Musgrave Lane. "BAGS" have a waiting list of 5 potential Allotment holders. Council agreed they can use the corner originally for Recycling Centre. We agreed to let the land currently used for grazing to the end of February 2021. 6). Audio-visual Equipment at the Memorial Hall. Cllr. McKenzie reported that this multifunctional equipment has been installed. It is of very high quality and available for a range of activities, including presentations, training sessions, community and private events as well as Brough Remote Cinema. Financial support for this exceptional Community asset was sought by the Memorial Hall Committee and BPC agreed to provide £2,000 towards its costs. Cllr. McKenzie thanked everyone on behalf of the Memorial Hall. Continued on page 6

5 STAINMORE WI Some of our members have worked hard making beautiful and intricate craft items for the WI Show at Appleby. Unfortunately, the show has now been cancelled because of the virus, but all is not in vain because we have been told that we can enter them in the Show next year. Our March WI meeting was enjoyable. We had lots of catching up to do as our previous meeting had been cancelled and our speaker, Damian Steadman, the undertaker was very entertaining. Damian had wanted to become an undertaker from the age of 16, which is quite unusual. He works in Appleby and has to be on duty most of the time to receive phone calls from bereaved people. He told us how in Victorian times the wealthy could be buried with a bell attached to the coffin, so that if they awoke from their unconscious state they could ring the bell for help. Hence the expression `graveyard shift` - the man who was paid to walk round the grave- yard at night to listen for a bells ringing. Damian told us about pre-paid funeral plans. He said that they were an unregulated business. Some may give money to a third party to organise the funeral, who may not be so interested in the wishes of the family. On a slightly lighter note, Damian brought with him a little sugarcraft coffin that he had kept from his 18th birthday cake that Sheila Capstick had made for him. Our next meeting on Wednesday 8th April, has been cancelled. We will have to wait and see what happens in May and June. D Clatworthy

Brough Parish Council continued from page 4 7). Fly Tipping. Cllr. Simpkins agreed to approach EDC with regards to fly tipping along Musgrave Lane, close to the A66, with a view to initiating appropriate action. This was a very busy meeting and there was a great deal more. For full details of this and all our meetings , please contact our Clerk on 017683 42394, find us on our website or better still come to one of our meetings. Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday 16th April at 7pm, who knows if we shall be able to hold it in the normal way. Take care and stay safe. Ailsa McKenzie

Comfort in these uncertain times I think that I have always known deep down that there is a God. I`m a gardener so it`s easy. I can see how cleverly and lovingly everything is put together and how everything knows what to do and when. I`m watching the birds building their nests at the moment. How do they know? The world isn`t just a functional model or machine. We have been given eyes to see the hundreds of different colours and patterns. We have been given ears to hear sounds, touch to feel different textures. Taste and smell to enjoy our food and nourishment. Hearts to love. Think about those gifts. Shouldn`t we say thank you? Our maker has provided us with a handbook for his creation. It is available for anyone who chooses to read it. It tells us how we can live to please Him and care for others. The Old Testament has examples of the power of God, how He helped and how He had disciplined his people. The New Testament tells us how he sent his only Son to die for the sins of the world. Easter reminds us that He rose from the dead, so that, if we have faith, we can own up to our mistakes and shortcomings and receive forgiveness. As we stay at home during these uncertain times, can I suggest that we use some of our spare time to read God`s words in his Bible. In it we can find comfort, peace and hope for the future. Dot Clatworthy

14 Walk of the Month – Argill Beck Revisited

Explore hidden corners of South Stainmore on this 7-mile walk. There is some walking on minor roads, and there is one tricky ascent and descent. Advisable not to do this walk after heavy rain. It is a lovely walk at Bluebell time. Drive to Brough Sowerby and park near the top of the village. After the road bends right turn left on a track by an old bus-stop sign. Follow the track to the bottom of the hill and turn right to follow the hedge to Hollins View Farm. Go to the right around the farm into the back yard and then follow a track up the hill. When the track levels out and bends right, go left to a gate and turn right along Leacett Lane. After ¼ mile turn left at cross-roads and continue for 700 yds. to reach Tewfitt Mires house on the right. Pass in front of the house and go up 3 steps into a field. After 100 yds. descend into a gully and follow the hedge to a gate. Climb this and follow the wall for ½ mile over two stiles. Over the top of the hill veer left to a gateway in a wall and drop down to Thorney Gale Farm. Go left through the farmyard to a gate, and then follow electricity poles to cross a stile, down and then up to Cragg House. Cross a stile and pass through a gate by a barn end, and after going through the yard to a gate turn left up a track, After passing a barn and before reaching a lane, turn right down to a stile over a fence and another stile to the right of a group of conifers. NOW, TAKE CARE. Head straight down a spur to a footbridge over a rocky gully, and then steeply up to a stile over a fence. Turn right to another stile, pass to the right of Dike House and continue towards the bottom of the hill. Veer left past a gully to cross a stile in the fence. Turn right and follow the fence all the way down to a stile into the Argill Gorge. Cross another stile and follow the beck downstream. Pass a footbridge and continue by the beck to a gate. Soon after, the path follows a gently rising slope to a gate, and after 200 yds. reaches a track down to the road at Argill Bridge. Turn right on the road for 200 yds. and turn left through a gate. Turn right across the field and follow the top of the valley and a grassy track leading to a gate to the right of a small wood. Follow the track to Field Head and walk through the yard. Pass through three gates and then turn right. After the next gate turn left to pass Bloan Farm, and then follow the track to emerge on a lane. Turn left and follow the lane back to Brough Sowerby.
