They were subsequently submitted to the Secretary of State, examined by the Planning Inspectorate and formally adopted by the County Council in January 2011. At a very late stage in the process, there was a successful legal challenge in connection with a procedural matter and the documents were quashed by the High Court. It is, therefore, necessary for the consultations to be repeated before the documents can be resubmitted to the Secretary of State. The challenge was about the inclusion, without a further round of consultations, of an Area of Search for sand and gravel known as M12 Roosecote quarry extension in Site Allocations Policy 7. This Area of Search was intended as a possible replacement for the nearby Roose sand and gravel quarry near Barrow in Furness, which is a Preferred Area in the policy. The Inspector who examined the documents, concluded that the Area of Search needed to be included in the policy. The document on which we are now consulting includes the Area of Search in Policy 7, but with a reduced area that relates better to field boundaries. Copies of the Site Allocations Policies document and Proposals Map Insert G are enclosed, together with a CD of the other documents that are intended to be submitted. The documents can also be seen on the County Council website www.cumbria.gov.uk under Environment and Planning and then Minerals and Waste Development Framework. Your comments on the documents are invited and need to be received no later than Monday 5 December 2011. CHAIRMAN’S ANNOUNCEMENTS Dog Fouling - A report had been received that dog fouling is occurring on the grassed area at the top of the village near Hunting Lodge Close. This has to be regularly removed so the grass can be cut. It was suggested that additional signs be sited in this area reminding people to respect the area and clean up after their dogs. Closure of Maryport and Wigton Hospitals - Public meetings have been held recently about the future of Maryport and Wigton Hospitals. Anyone wishing to voice their concerns should email Sir Neil Mckay on [email protected] or contact the MP for the area Sue Hayman. Dementia Action Alliance – An invitation had been received from Age UK who have formed an informal Dementia Action Alliance Group. The next meeting will be held on Monday 3rd October at Aspatria Surgery.

Indian Infancy covers the years in India from my birth in December 1941 to my return to England in 1947. Dorset Days and Dragon Days (with Jamie Bruce Lockhart) cover my life from 1947 to 1954 in Dorset and 1955 at the Dragon School. My own account of the Dragon experience is in Becoming a Dragon. Lakeland Life describes my home life in the Lake District from 1954 to 1960 and is paralleled by Sedbergh Schooldays, an account of my time at Sedbergh School in Yorkshire 1955-60. Later volumes will take the story on to Oxford University for six years and beyond. All of the volumes are principally based on contemporary documents, especially letters written by members of the family. This volume is based on several sets of letters, my mother’s to me and to my father (when she was away from him on home leave), my letters to my parents and my sister Fiona’s letters to my parents.
