Snfu del 22 al 26 de Julio hfmncrew.com Press Kit / Snfu hfmncrew.com Press Kit / Snfu Formados a principios de los 80 en Canadá, con un total de 8 LPs, un disco en directo y un recopilatorio, SNFU ha sido (y continua siendo) una de las bandas más longevas de la escena punk canadiense. Liderados por su excéntrico cantante, Ken Chinn, más conocido como Mr. Chi Pig, único miembro que ha permanecido constante en la formación de SNFU, ya que han sido casi 30 músicos (sí, habéis leído bien) los que han pasado por las filas de la banda. ¡La historia de SNFU realmente da para escribir un libro! Los inicios del grupo se remontan a finales de los años 70, donde Ken Chinn conoció a los gemelos Belke. Los tres compartían el mismo interés por la escena skate-punk underground que estaba en auge por aquel entonces y como cualquier adolescente rebelde de la época decidieron formar una banda. Decidieron nombrar al grupo Society's No Fucking Use, frecuentemente abreviado a Society's NFU, aunque finalmenté se terminó acortando a SNFU. SNFU gradualmente construyó un público a lo largo de Norteamérica gracias a su energética y agresiva puesta en escena. Telonearon a leyendas como Dead Kennedy's, Youth Brigade o GBH y finalmente BYO Records lanzó su primer álbum "...And No One Else Wanted to Play", que a día de hoy sigue considerándose un clásico. Una anécdota curiosa es que todos los títulos de SNFU contienen 7 palabras en su título. La popularidad del grupo creció con el paso de los años hasta que en 1987 el fanzine Flipside los votó como mejor banda en directo, superando a grupos de la talla de Red Hot Chili Peppers o Fugazi. Incluso podemos ver a un James Hetfiel (Metallica) posando con camiseta del grupo en su EP "Garage Days Re-Revisited". Desgraciadamente en 1989, poco después de su primera gira europea, SNFU deciden dejar el grupo por problemas internos entre sus miembros así como agotamiento en general. Por suerte en 1991 deciden lanzar "The Last of the Big Time Suspenders", disco en directo que también incluía demos y canciones descartadas. Con motivo de dicho lanzamiento el grupo decidió hace una gira promocional y tras finalizar y ver el éxito cosechado ello les animó a continuar componiendo. En 1992 fichan por Epitaph Records (Rancid, Bad Religion, RKL, Millencolin). Sin duda esta fue la época más prolífera de SNFU ya que con motivo de fichar por Epitaph se les brindó la oportunida de tocar con grupos como Bad Religion, Green Day, Bouncing Souls, Korn o Tool. En el año 97 hfmncrew.com Press Kit / Snfu terminan su contrato con Epitaph y fichan por Megaforce Records. Diversos cambios en la formación y continuos altibajos en la situación del grupo les hace pasar por un mal momento, pero a pesar de todo el grupo no se rinde y siguen adelante. En 2005 deciden volver a dejar el grupo debido a frustaciones con la industria musical y continuos problemas internos entre sus miembros. Afortunadamente en 2007 y con motivo del 25 aniversario de SNFU los miembros deciden reunirse de nuevo para ofrecer un concierto celebrando la ocasión. Se genera mucha controversia sobre si SNFU seguirán o no, a lo que Mr. Chi Pig, su líder, contesta lo siguiente: "Han habido muchos cambios en el grupo a lo largo de los años, éste no es más que otro cambio, así lo veo yo... Esas canciones son mi vida y las seguiré cantando hasta el día que me muera". We’ll be featuring a different Vancouver based band each issue starting with scum punks the Excessives. With the new Arena and Rod Stewart having played Victoria, you can just feel that this is going to be a great year for live music around town. I’m always impressed with the turnout and energy of the younger crowds at the all-ages shows. Even if you’re old you should go check one out sometime. You might find it invigorating to jump in a circle pit of mohawked fury. It was great hanging out with the crew at Spitfire Tattoo special thanks to Rick and Amanda. Electric Frankenstein was an amazing show and just proves that Victoria gets wicked shows all the time. A big middle finger to the asshole bouncers @ Diego’s who wouldn’t let me in even though I was on the guest list and then proceeded to tell the headlining act CHOKE to “pack their shit, they weren’t going to play.” This was after two huge idiots working the door beat up CHOKE’s drummer who weighs about a buck ten soaking wet.

Our first Boston show was with DYS, The Mighty COs and The AMERICA’S HARDCORE FU’s. It was very intense for us. We were so intimidated. The two-disc limited edition set, titled U2: The Best Of 1980-1990, will include one CD containing 13 hits from those years, plus a new re-recording of Joshua Tree outtake "Sweetest Thing," and asecond CD of 15 B-sides and rarities. On November 10, Island will release the hits CD separately. Both releases will be preceded by the release of "Sweetest Thing" to radio on September 29. Through interactions with participants over extended periods of time, these spaces become meaningful places that are imbued with the energy, history and memories of local music scenes. When a venue is shut down, local punk scenes experience a temporary disruption as participants struggle to begin the process of re-establishing a new autonomous social space free from outsider interference. Therefore, moving from the local, to the national, to the international, from the small and personal to the vast and global, as well as from the physical to the virtual, this dissertation illustrates the actual, everyday practices of local scenes across Canada, addressing the larger issue of the loss of alternative music venues occurring on a global scale and the resulting impact on punk scene participants. Through the use of ethnographic research methods such as participant observation, photographic documentation, interviews and surveys, this dissertation engages with contemporary punk scene participants in order to give voice to those often ignored in grand narratives of punk history.
