Collection Description Scope and Content Note The collection consists of material documenting the hardcore punk rock and alternative music scene in Atlanta, Georgia, from circa 1980-2009. The majority of the collection relates to the bands Neon Christ and Gardens Of.... Neon Christ was founded in 1983 and featured members Randy DuTeau, Jimmy Demer, William "Kip" DuVall, and Danny Lankford. Gardens Of... was a successor to Neon Christ and included DuTeau, Demer, and Lankford. DuVall went on to play in other local Atlanta bands and is currently the lead singer for rock band and grunge pioneers Alice in Chains. The majority of the collection consists of flyers and posters advertising concerts, many of which were held at Atlanta club Metroplex. Some flyers are from concerts in Atlanta featuring bands of national renown such as Black Flag, though most feature local acts. In cases where Neon Christ or Gardens Of... were on the bill, items were arranged with other materials relating to those bands. All other flyers and posters were arranged according to the band with top billing. There are also photographs of concerts and publicity stills for Neon Christ and Gardens Of..., as well as two folders of correspondence from fans requesting copies of Neon Christ records. Much of the material in the collection was donated by former band members and items such as ticket stubs document their interest in and connections to other bands and genres of music. Arrangement Note Arranged in alphabetical order by name. 2 Atlanta (Ga.) punk rock collection, circa 1980-2009 Manuscript Collection No. 1340 Container List Box Folder Content 2 42 105.3 The Buzz, promotional materials, 2006 AV3 - 19:37, You're a Little Bit Lonely/Surfin' Pharisea, Bombay Records, 1982 [original: phonograph, 45rpm] AV2 - The 513 Club, Atlanta's Punk-n-Pie, undated [original: CD] AV1 - Act of Faith, Gain, undated [original: compact disc] AV1 - Act of Faith, Test of Strength, 1994 [original: compact disc] CLP - Act of Faith, 4 track record, 1991 [original: LP record] OP4 - Act of Faith, t-shirt, undated 2 17 Act of Faith, Crisis Under Control, Mission of Murder, Moodswing Records and Standfast Records, stickers and patch, undated 2 16 Act of Faith, Crisis Under Control, Mudfoot!, Quadiliacha, One Way, M.F.R., ex members of..., Driverdome, and The Difference, flyers, undated 2 28 Act of Faith, Downpour, JAWK Smash Zine, Keepsake, Pax 13, Portrait and Standfast Records, patches, undated OP2 5 Andrew Wiggins, Champion ZOZ, Pyramid Club and Rin Larping, undated OP2 5 Androids to Void, Davidians, Helix Sequence, Helta Skelta, Parallel and Wymyns Prysyn, poster, undated AV1 - Another Style, "Take it Off," Styles Records, Inc., 1993 [original: audio cassettes] 2 1 A.O.D., flyer, 1984 AV3 - The Art of Wondering, The Silver Frame/Word, J Gordon Babush, 1985 [original: phonograph, 45rpm] 2 2 ASexuals, flyer, 1985 2 41 Asphalt Blaster's Eletric Pagan Cabaret, promotional materials, undated OP9 9 Asphalt Blaster, calendar, 2003 2 27 Atlanta, Brother Hawk, ex members of..., One Way, Standfast Records and Well Fed, stickers, undated OP5 - Atlanta Lifers: Est. 2009, t-shirt, undated OP2 9 Awkward Sounds, Sorry About the Blood, and Blue Tower, Exiles, split record, test pressing, Southern Soundclash Records, 1 of 10, undated [original: LP record] 1 1 Bad Brains, flyer, undated OP1 1 Bad Brains, poster of H.R., 1984 2 22 Bad People, Black Bodies, Davidians, Genetic Treason, G.G. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Contributions to English 2 Contributions to English and American Literary Studies 2 and American Literary Studies 2 Antje Kley / Kai Merten (eds.) Antje Kley / Kai Merten (eds.) Kai Merten (eds.) Merten Kai / What Literature Knows This volume sheds light on the nexus between knowledge and literature. Arranged What Literature Knows historically, contributions address both popular and canonical English and Antje Kley US-American writing from the early modern period to the present. They focus on how historically specific texts engage with epistemological questions in relation to Forays into Literary Knowledge Production material and social forms as well as representation. The authors discuss literature as a culturally embedded form of knowledge production in its own right, which deploys narrative and poetic means of exploration to establish an independent and sometimes dissident archive. The worlds that imaginary texts project are shown to open up alternative perspectives to be reckoned with in the academic articulation and public discussion of issues in economics and the sciences, identity formation and wellbeing, legal rationale and political decision-making. What Literature Knows The Editors Antje Kley is professor of American Literary Studies at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany. Her research interests focus on aesthetic forms and cultural functions of narrative, both autobiographical and fictional, in changing media environments between the eighteenth century and the present. Kai Merten is professor of British Literature at the University of Erfurt, Germany. His research focuses on contemporary poetry in English, Romantic culture in Britain as well as on questions of mediality in British literature and Postcolonial Studies. He is also the founder of the Erfurt Network on New Materialism.
