  • The Case of Doha, Qatar
Mapping the Growth of an Arabian Gulf Town: the case of Doha, Qatar Part I. The Growth of Doha: Historical and Demographic Framework Introduction In this paper we use GIS to anatomize Doha, from the 1820s to the late 1950s, as a case study of an Arab town, an Islamic town, and a historic Arabian Gulf town. We use the first two terms advisedly, drawing attention to the contrast between the ubiquitous use of these terms versus the almost complete lack of detailed studies of such towns outside North Africa and Syria which might enable a viable definition to be formulated in terms of architecture, layout and spatial syntax. In this paper we intend to begin to provide such data. We do not seek to deny the existence of similarities and structuring principles that cross-cut THE towns and cities of the Arab and Islamic world, but rather to test the concepts, widen the dataset and extend the geographical range of such urban studies, thereby improving our understanding of them. Doha was founded as a pearl fishing town in the early 19th century, flourished during a boom in pearling revenues in the late 19th and early 20th century, and, after a period of economic decline following the collapse of the pearling industry in the 1920s, rapidly expanded and modernized in response to an influx of oil revenues beginning in 1950 (Othman, 1984; Graham, 1978: 255).1 As such it typifies the experience of nearly all Gulf towns, the vast majority of which were also founded in the 18th or early 19th century as pearl fishing settlements, and which experienced the same trajectory of growth, decline and oil-fuelled expansion (Carter 2012: 115-124, 161-169, 275-277).2 Doha is the subject of a multidisciplinary study (The Origins of Doha and Qatar Project), and this paper comprises the first output of this work, which was made possible by NPRP grant no.

  • The Archaeology of Kuwait
School of History and Archaeology The Archaeology of Kuwait By Majed Almutairi A thesis submitted in fulfilment of requirements for a Ph.D. in Archaeology Supervisor: Professor Denys Pringle i Summary This thesis addresses the archaeology of Kuwait from 13000BC to the 18th century AD, to further understand its significances within the Arabian Gulf and wider world. Kuwait has witness many diverse cultures By comparing for the first time the archaeology, geography, and historical sources, I illustrate that this region has been continual inhabited and used as an important hub of social networks since its beginnings. By introducing the Ubaid civilization and their relations with other regions, we witness the first exchange and trade strategies in Kuwait. By looking at the burial mound phenomenon in Kuwait we witness a hiatus of permanent settlements and a time when people were more nomadic. The impact of these mounds resonated into later periods. Petroleum based substances play a key role in modern Kuwait; the Ubaid and the Dilmun first developed the usage of bitumen, and here we see how that created links with others in the world. Ideas move as well as people, and I demonstrate the proto-Hellenistic and Hellenistic periods in Kuwait to illustrate influences from the Mediterranean. Modern Kuwait is Islamic, and here we will investigate how and why and the speeds at which Christianity gave way to Islam, and the impacts of a different religion on the region. In highlighting Kuwait’s past, I show how the state became one of the most democratic and diverse places in the Arabian Gulf.

  • Kuwait Is the Past, Dubai Is the Present, Doha Is the Future: Informational Cities on the Arabian Gulf
International Journal of Knowledge Society Research, 6(2), 51-64, April-June 2015 51 Kuwait is the Past, Dubai is the Present, Doha is the Future: Informational Cities on the Arabian Gulf Julia Gremm, Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf, Germany Julia Barth, Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf, Germany Wolfgang G. Stock, Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf, Germany ABSTRACT Many cities in the world define themselves as ‘smart.’ Is this term appropriate for cities in the emergent Gulf region? This article investigates seven Gulf cities (Kuwait City, Manama, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Muscat) that have once grown rich due to large reserves of oil and gas. Now, with the threat of ending resources, governments focus on the development towards a knowledge society. The authors analyzed the cities in terms of their ‘smartness’ or ‘informativeness’ by a quantitative survey and by in-depth qualitative interviews (N = 34). Especially Doha in Qatar is well on its way towards an informational city, but also Dubai and Sharjah (both in the United Arab Emirates) make good scores. Keywords: Arab Cities, GCC Countries, Gulf Cities, Informational City, Informativeness, Knowledge Society, Servqual, Smart City 1. INTRODUCTION In the heat of the Gulf region 50 years ago, the desert dominates the landscape, the beaches are almost empty, and the few people living there work as pearl divers, fishermen, traders or peasants. Replaced by glittering facades, high-end hotels, artificial islands, huge shopping malls, and the tallest constructions of the world, the region nowadays attracts people from all over the world. The catalyst for this development was the detection of huge amounts of oil and gas resources in the 1960`s leading to prosperity.
