    Syria Transition Challenges Project Discussion Paper (13) The UAE’s Role in Syria’s Stability Najla al-Qasemi, Dubai Public Policy Research Centre (Bhuth) 1 The Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) The Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) is an international foundation established in 1995, with 53 member states, for the primary purpose of promoting peace, security and international cooperation through executive education, applied policy research and dialogue. The GCSP trains government officials, diplomats, military officers, international civil servants and NGO and private sector staff in pertinent fields of international peace and security. Syria Transition Challenges Project A multilateral dialogue and research project that aims to build bridges between the EU, Russia, Turkey, and the US on the three issues of Reform, Refugees Return, and Reconstruction. The project is run by the GCSP in collaboration with European University Institute (EUI), Syrian Centre for Policy Research (SCPR), and swisspeace. Editors: Abdulla Ibrahim, Project Lead Researcher Lorraine Charles, Research Associate Tamer Badawi, Research Assistant Author Najla al-Qasemi Najla commenced her work as a researcher at the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies in 1999, in 2002, she joined the United Arab Emirates Ministry for Foreign Affairs as a USA Desk Officer. Later she was assigned the duties of Deputy Director of the Undersecretary Office at the Ministry. In 2004, she was transferred to the United Arab Emirates Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, following Human Rights and humanitarian issues. Since 2008 she was appointed as Ambassador to Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Portugal. Returning to the United Arab Emirates in 2016, she worked as a lecturer at Zayed University.

Al-Makahleh has been working for several Middle Eastern countries as a political, military and security expert. Brief Analysis f all the bilateral ties between Arab states, the Jordanian-Syrian relationship has been among the most O intense. Various gradations of reciprocal unfriendliness and even open animosity have characterized the two countries’ ties since the 1970s, reflecting the rise of the Ba’ath party and Hafez al-Assad. However, recent economic instabilities pushed Jordan to approach the Syrian war in an unexpectedly neutral manner, and these same economic concerns may push the Hashemite Kingdom closer to the Assad regime in the near future. A thaw in the “Cold War” between Amman and Damascus has materialized, ostensibly neutralizing many years of conflict. The apparent recent successes of Bashar al-Assad's regime in recapturing much of Southwest Syria raises the question of what lies in the future for the Jordanian-Syrian relationship, especially given probable intimations that Damascus is unhappy with where the relationship currently stands. Throughout the conflict, Jordan was unsurprisingly more anxious about safeguarding its own domestic resilience than the persistence or collapse of the Syrian regime. The Kingdom has repeatedly pursued regional and international political settlement attempts to end the Syrian conflict, as Amman foresaw the potentially subverting influence of a protracted war on its borders.

The United Nations Appeals Tribunal (Appeals Tribunal) has before it an appeal against Judgment No. UNDT/2018/087, rendered by the United Nations Dispute Tribunal (UNDT or Dispute Tribunal) in New York on 4 September 2018, in the case of Yasin v. Secretary-General of the United Nations. The Secretary-General filed the appeal on 5 November 2018, and Ms. Haseena Yasin filed her answer on 17 December 2018. Facts and Procedure 2. For two years from February 2013 to February 2015, Ms. Yasin worked as Chief of Mission Support (CMS) at the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), Baghdad. 3. The Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) has its presence at UNAMI through an Audit Unit headed by a Chief Resident Auditor. A few days after he arrived in Baghdad on assignment in November 2012, the Chief Resident Auditor and the entire Audit Unit were relocated from Baghdad to Kuwait City mainly due to the crisis in Syria and other security concerns as well as a space shortage in Baghdad. However, it was not clear whether the move was temporary or prolonged.

However, the celebration of Eid-ul Fitr on 24 May 2020 at Malaysia House was still full of happiness with lots of delicious special Raya dishes enjoyed by Embassy’s staff and families only. It started with photo session, brunch and ended with takbir led by Ambassador Agus Salim bin Yusof. Prior to that, the Ambassador sent his Eid-ul Fitr message by email to all Malaysian Muslims in Bahrain. On 28 May 2020, the fifth day of Syawal, the Embassy of Malaysia celebrated the Eid-ul Fitr with the Embassy’s staff.
