Revised June 30, 1997 Starbucks Corporation (A) Starbucks Corporation is a Seattle, Washington-based coffee company. It roasts and sells whole bean coffees and coffee drinks through a national chain of retail outlets/restaurants. Originally only a seller of packaged, premium, roasted coffees, the bulk of the company's revenues now comes from its coffee bars’ where people can purchase beverages and pastries in addition to coffee by the pound. Starbucks is credited with changing the way Americans view coffee, and its success has attracted the attention of investors nationwide. Starbucks has consistently been one of the fastest growing companies in the United States with over 1,006 retail outlets in 1996. Over a five-year period starting in 1991, net revenues increased at a compounded annual growth rate of 61 percent. In fiscal 1996, net revenues increased 50 percent to $696 million from $465 million for the same period the previous year (see Exhibit 1). Net earnings rose 61 percent to $42 million from the previous year’s $26 million. Sales for Starbucks have been continuing to grow steadily, and the company is still a darling of investors with a PE ratio of 58. To continue to grow at a rapid pace, the firm’s senior executives have been considering international expansion. Specifically, they are interested in Japan and other Asian countries, where Starbucks had little or no presence. Japan, the world’s third largest coffee consumer after the United States and Germany, represented both a challenge and a huge opportunity to the firm. To explore what changes in Starbucks strategy were required, and the questions that might arise during expansion, this case looks at the firm’s entry strategy into Japan and the nature of issues facing the firm during early 1997. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE The Woman in Kimono: An Ambivalent Image of Modern Japanese Identity※ Kaoru Kojima When the Meiji Government opened Kōbu Bijutsu Gakkō (an Art School of the Ministry of Technology), the first national institute for the education of Western style art in Japan, in 1876, female students were admitted as well as male students. However, the government closed the school in 1882 and discontinued its promotion of education in Western style art. It was only after 1896,that the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, established in 1887 by the Ministry of Education, opened a department of Western style painting and started life-drawing classes. Only male students were eligible for admission to this school from its opening until as late as 1946.1 The female nude became an ardently desired genre by Japanese male artists, though exhibiting images of the female nude to the public remained controversial until the early twentieth century. Neither allegorical paintings of female nudes nor divine mythological female figures of the sort in the Indian art assumed a major presence in Japanese modern art. Diverse images of women wearing kimono, however, were extremely popular in Japanese visual culture. This essay analyzes the emergence of the kimono-clad female figure as a Japanese icon abetted by nationalism and imperialism in the age of the Japanese Empire. 1. [Press Release 2019.8.28/29] Part 1 Inaugural Exhibition Programs Press Release 2019.8.28 About the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art Inagural Program Plan The Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art’s large-scale renovation will greatly expand opportunities to enjoy and appreciate art in the historical Main Building and moreover in the newly established Higashiyama Cube, The Triangle (devoted to works by emerging artists), KYOCERA Square, The Japanese Garden and other areas. Taking full advantage of the features and functions of these spaces, the Museum will introduce a full range of modern to contemporary art genres to enhance Kyoto’s special culture of nurturing both tradition and innovation. The completion of the Main Building renovation is to be commemorated with the exhibition “250 Years of Kyoto Art Masterpieces.” In three installments, the exhibition introduces a comprehensive survey of 250 years of Kyoto art masterpieces, dating from the Edo and Meiji periods to the present day. In addition, to offer maximum appreciation of the seasons in Kyoto, the newly created Collection Room will feature Kyoto nihonga and crafts from the Museum collection selected and rotated with each season. Higashiyama Cube will introduce contemporary art and animation, manga, and fashion that harness the contemporary and international energy of the Kyoto cultural scene in this town with so many art universities. The inaugural exhibition, “HIROSHI SUGIMOTO - POST VITAM” a contemporary artist at the forefront of the international art scene, focuses on Sugimoto’s Kyoto experience in the context of the Okazaki area where the Museum is located. Contemporary Japan Challenges for a World Economic Power in Transition edited by Paolo Calvetti, Marcella Mariotti A New Frontier in Art From Calligraphy to Performance Rossella Menegazzo (Università degli Studi di Milano, Italia) Abstract Over the last few years writing and calligraphic forms have seen a huge revival both in Japan and in East Asia developing as a new form of art. Works and installations using calligraphy, writing or typographic fonts and exploiting the richness of Asian languages have increased to the point where there’s no exhibition or Biennal where art writing is missing. Following the classical pictorial models and formats, where calligraphy and painted images are considered as a unique form of expression, similarly, today calligraphic forms are used, mixed and overlapping with im- ages both in contemporary graphic design and in photographic works. However, we can see also an increase in research through performative acts which recall the instinctive and free gesture of the zenga masters, at the same time adding at the same time to that approach the qualities of new media, technologies and internationalized art trends. The result is a completely new form of art expression originating from a continuous exchange between worldly active and complementary creative movements. Summary 1.
