Considering undercurrents in Japanese cultural heritage management: the logic of actualisation and the preservation of the present Masahiro Ogino Kwansei Gakuin University The aim of this chapter is to analyse two undercurrents in Japanese cultural heritage management. The other under- current is a recent phenomenon that can be observed not only in Japan but also in many other late-modern societies across the World: that is, the preservation of the present. Examining these two undercurrents helps us understand the particular situation in which Japan finds itself today in terms of cultural heritage management. The logic of actualisation In Europe, people’s conception of time seems in part informed by the presence of historic monuments and museums. In this cultural context, many old buildings retain their original use and function socially as monuments. These monuments, through their very presence, visually represent history in its continuity, and people thus come to acknowledge a linear notion of time by seeing them in their everyday life. -

Ⅳ Activities of Each Institution Tokyo National Museum As Japans foremost museum in the humanities eld, Toyo National Museum collects, pre- serves, manages, and displays cultural properties from across Japan and other Asian re- gions, while also conducting research and providing educational programs. The Tokyo National Museum was established in 1872, making it the oldest museum in Japan. We collect, preserve, restore, and display a large number of National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties as well as around 120,000 tangible cultural properties, mainly from Japan and various Asian regions. We also conduct surveys and research in addition to providing educational programs on them. The Museum is working to develop more appealing comprehensive cultural exhibitions by holding seasonal events in addition to its display of collected and preserved works. We also run school programs, guided tours, workshops, and various other programs that help participants appreciate cultural properties while becoming more familiar with and further understanding them through, for example, art making experiences. Additionally, as Japanese culture attracts global attention, we play a central role in disseminating it to the world and strive to become a more appealing museum. To this end, we are formulating and implementing the Tohaku New Era Plan with the goals of promoting easy-to-understand exhibition commentary and multilingual support as well as creating a comfortable viewing environment. 140 The Buddha of Kamakura The Buddha of Kamakura and the “Modernization” of Buddhist Statuary in the Meiji Period Hiroyuki Suzuki, Tokyo Gakugei University Introduction During Japan’s revolutionary years in the latter half of the nineteenth century, in particular after the Meiji Restoration of 1868, people experienced a great change in the traditional values that had governed various aspects of their life during the Edo period (1603-1867). In their religious life, Buddhism lost its authority along with its economic basis because the Meiji government, propagating Shintoism, repeatedly ordered the proclamation of the separation of Shintoism and Buddhism after the Restoration. The proclamation brought about the anti-Buddhist movement haibutsu kishaku and the nationwide movement doomed Buddhist statuary to a fate it had never before met.1 However, a number of statues were fortunately rescued from destruction and became recognized as sculptural works of Buddhist art in the late 1880s. This paper examines the change of viewpoints that occurred in the 1870s whereby the Buddha of Kamakura, a famous colossus of seated Amida (Amitâbha) from the mid-thirteenth century, was evaluated afresh by Western viewers; it also tries to detect the thresholds that marked the path toward a general acceptance of the idea that Buddhist statuary formed a genre of sculptural works in the fine arts during the Meiji period (1868-1912). Ⅱ Outline of the National Institutes for Cultural Heritage The Independent Administrative Institution (IAI), National Institutes for Cultural Heritage, was formed in April 2007 through the merging of the IAI National Museums (Tokyo National Museum, Kyoto National Museum, Nara National Museum, and Kyushu National Museum) and the IAI National Research Institutes for Cultural Properties (Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties and Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties), all of which share the same mission: the conservation and utilization of cultural properties. With the addition of the International Research Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region, which was established in October 2011, the National Institutes for Cultural Heritage now comprise a total of seven separate institutions. Japan’s cultural properties are the precious assets of the Japanese people. University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of Art and Art History Fall 2014, Study Abroad in Kobe, Japan ART 380: Early Art of Japan – Buddhist Art and Visual Culture Instructor: Prof. John Szostak Credit hours: 3 Contact hours: 45 Course Description: This course explores the art of Japan’s early periods (prehistory through the 16th century) with special emphasis on Japanese Buddhist art and visual culture. The course structure combines reading- and lecture-based learning with a significant outside-the-classroom component in the form of multiple field trips. The class is tailored to take advantage of the many temples in the greater Kansai region that were central to the development of Japanese Buddhism and its art, as well as the presence of several museums that will allow students to experience first-hand the art objects under study. Student who successfully apply themselves in the course will emerge at its conclusion with a knowledge of the values and beliefs associated with the various schools of Japanese Buddhism, and how these are represented through such media as painting, sculpture, ritual implements, architecture, and garden design. The course begins with the Kofun period (ca. 250-552), especially its burial practices and funerary culture centered around the decorated mound tombs for which the period is named, including Goshiki Kofun, located in Kobe. The second section of the course covers the establishment of Buddhism in Japan during the Asuka period (552-710) and its expansion in the Nara period (710-784), and will be supplemented by a field trip to the Nara National Museum and several important surviving Nara-period temples (projected: Todaij, Yakushiji, Kofukuji, and Horyuji). -

Bureaucratic Ideals and Artisanal Reality Survival Strategies in the Production of Echigo J u Melissa M. Rinne The production of Echigo j u, a fine Japanese ramie textile, is in crisis. Woven on a body-tension 100m from hand-plied threads and often incorporating detailed warp and weft kasuri (ikat), Echigo j u is arguably one of the most sophisticated extant bast fiber traditions in Japan, and perhaps the world. Media and researchers alike regularly laud its ancient production processes, but contemporary makers are facing the almost insurmountable challenge of remaining financially solvent in a rapidly diminishing kimono market, with an increasing scarcity of artisans. One reason that Echigo j u survives today is because it has been designated an mportant Intangible Cultural Property by the government of Japan. This designation, given only to a small number of outstanding craft traditions, stipulates adherence to a set of specific highly skilled and non-mechanized production processes. -

Ⅲ Activities of Each Institution Tokyo National Museum As Japan’s representative museum in the humanities field, Tokyo National Museum collects, preserves, manages, and displays cultural properties from across Japan and other Asian re- gions, while also conducting research and providing educational programs. Tokyo National Museum was established in 1872 and has the longest history among all museums in Japan. Our collection contains more than 114,000 items, including many National Treasures and Important Cul- tural Properties. We collect, preserve, restore and display tangible cultural properties from across Japan and other Asian regions. We also conduct research into these properties and promote understanding of them through educational activities. At Tohaku (our nickname for the Tokyo National Museum), April 2014 saw the opening of the Main Gate Plaza, as part of the redevelopment of the area around the museum’s main entrance. The Main Gate Plaza incorporates an information desk, ticket counters, a museum shop and a nursing room; this new fa- cility presents a warm welcome to visitors. In the regular exhibitions, Rooms 15-19 in the Honkan building have had new cases installed with special high-transmission, low-reflectance glass, which makes it possible to view the exhibits more clear- ly, creating an enhanced exhibition environment. In addition, special self-guided tours are now available using the museum’s “Tohaku Navi” guide application, along with various other new measures to help im- prove the visitor experience.
