rey & mari� a jOsé muñOz jiménez os dí�as 21 y 22 de abril de 2017 la seec se unió a la conmemoración L del bimilenario de la muerte de Ovidio celebrando un simposio con el tí�tulo «Ovidio 2000 años después». El poeta fue el hilo conductor de las distintas intervenciones de aquel simposio que tuvo lugar en Madrid en la Fundación Pastor, de cuya hospitalidad, una vez más, somos deudores. Es de justicia agradecer a la Fundación y de manera especial a su presidente, el Prof. D. Emilio Crespo, y a sus patronos la generosidad con la que nos acogen. La seec no podí�a dejar de celebrar, aunque lo hicieran también otras universidades en el mismo año, el bimilenario de Ovidio, y así� nos su- mamos a esta conmemoración. La relevancia de la obra de este poeta en el conjunto de la literatura latina y los ecos ovidianos que podemos rastrear tanto en la literatura como en el arte a través de diversas épocas y ámbitos geográficos fueron justificado motivo para que decidiéramos dedicar el simposio monográfico a la figura y obra del poeta de Sulmona. Entre las páginas que siguen encontrará el lector ponencias dedicadas a cuestiones relacionadas con la transmisión de los textos ovidianos, las ediciones y comentarios de las Metamorfosis (Ramí�rez de Verger) y la comparación de las leyendas de las Metamorfosis de Ovidio con las de la Biblioteca de Apolodoro (A� lvarez-Iglesias). También otra obra del poeta, las Heroidas, y un aspecto concreto, las mujeres ví�ctimas de la guerra, fue objeto de estudio en el simposio (Moya) o el recorrido realizado por el poeta de la elegí�a erótica a la elegí�a de exilio y la construcción de un nuevo lenguaje poético (Alvar).

    GODDESS OF LOVE AND MISTRESS OF THE SEA NOTES ON A HELLENISTIC HYMN TO ARSINOE-APHRODITE (P. LIT. GOODSP. 2, I-IV)* Abstract: This article analyses one of the hexametric poems copied on a 2nd-century AD papyrus, possibly from Hermupolis, P. Lit. Good- speed 2: a Hellenistic hymn to Aphrodite celebrated as a patroness of the sea and of wedded love. This portrayal of the goddess perfectly fits with Ptolemaic royal propaganda in the 3rd century BC. The address to ’Arsinóa Ptolema[ì] (II 5) reveals that the goddess is here worshipped as a divine image of a queen Arsinoe, most probably Arsinoe II Phila- delphos, who had strong links with key figures of the Ptolemaic navy. The hymn is compared with contemporary Alexandrian poetry, such as the epigrams of the Milan papyrus P. Mil. Vogl. VIII 309. Some hypo- theses are also presented on the context of the composition and the per- formance of the hymn (a Cypriot cult of Arsinoe Philadelphos?). THE PAPYRUS P. Goodspeed 101 is a fragment of a papyrus roll composed by a series of II AD documents pasted together1. Ediciones Digitales, Aguadilla, Puerto Rico This publication may be freely copied and distributed for educational non-profit use. i The inspiration for this short contribution was the statement made by Peter Bernhardt, on page 12 of his enjoyable Gods and Goddesses in the Garden... (2008), to the 1 effect that botanist Constantine Samuel Rafinesque had made up “out of thin air” the names of four plant genera Introduction, dedicated to nymphs whose names “no one has ever Methods and found... in the classic poems, plays, or books of mythology.” Results Rafinesque dedicated to nymphs fifty plant genera, only seven of which can be matched to a nymph known from classic works. This situation has unavoidably led to educated guesses by researchers interested in the etymology of plant names. For example, Schultes and Pease (1963) suggest that Adipe may refer to the generally fleshy flower and Cordula to a club-shaped column, of orchids. In an attempt to determine the origin of Rafinesque’s names, I extracted from Burkhardt (2018) 45 generic names dedicated by Rafinesque to nymphs. Given that with a single exception the names originated in Rafinesque’s Flora Te lu r i a n a and Sylva Teluriana, both publications were 2 browsed page by page and five more names were found, reaching the total of fifty. I then began searching for the names on the Internet and it quickly became apparent that they did not originate in the names of the classic nymphs of antiquity, but rather on the names of what Vane- Wright (2005) has called winged nymphs: butterflies! All but six of the 50 names, and all but two of the remaining 44, can be traced to a butterfly included in two works by Johann Christian Fabricius published during the late 18th century.

    The book of Gods,Goddessess,Heroes and other Characters of Mythology In broad terms mythology is composed of traditional stories about gods, kings, and heroes. Myths often tell about the creation of the world (and about its destruction as well), about the creation of men, and, also, they provide lessons on a moral code by which to live. They were attempts to provide rationale to natural events and to human emotion. Mythological stories generally were passed on orally from generation to succeeding generation. Each tale, embellished and "corrupted" through the re-tellings, was probably a reasoned explanation of the facts as seen by unsophisticated and uneducated eyes. Most scholars today divide the subject into three categories: pure myth (primitive science and primitive religion), heroic saga (primitive history), and folklore (fictional stories). The identity of the sitter is unknown, but he was certainly a troubled individual. The plaintive, uncertain mouth, and the unhappy eyes reveal a personality beset by doubts and anxieties. The slightly upward glance looks into a void, as if all the familiar certainties had suddenly been perceived as illusions. The modelling of the furrowed brow and slack cheeks conveys a deep sense of loss and emptiness.
