A new age of steam? The Tua Valley Line, Portugal - Experience and Examples from the Technological Heritage Operations and Preserved Railways of Britain. Dr Dominic Fontana Department of Geography, University of Portsmouth, United Kingdom [email protected] The railways of Portugal are well known to a global community of steam enthusiasts, many of whom used to visit the country specifically to experience and photograph the last days of steam traction until as late as the 1980s. The narrow gauge lines north of the Douro River, and the Tua Valley line in particular, were considered as very special railways. Their outstanding combination of narrow gauge steam traction, relatively long runs of track and extraordinarily beautiful landscapes, made for a magical railway experience. In the 1980s steam was replaced with diesel traction and although there are now regular but infrequent steam hauled tourist trains on the Douro Valley line, there are currently very limited opportunities for people to recapture this experience. Portugal has several railway museums including the excellent National Railway Museum in Entroncamento, but these present static displays rather than “live” steam and many railway enthusiasts consider this to be a poor substitute for the “real” thing where steam locomotives are operating in steam, within a fully-fledged railway environment. 0189 2-8-4T Henschel 1925 Mallet locomotive at Regua. 1 Portugal possesses over 100 redundant steam locomotives (Bailey, 2013) dispersed in yards around its national railway network, some of them remain potentially usable and many are certainly restorable to full operating condition. Portugal also possesses track and routes, which have been recently closed to passenger and freight traffic. -

Pete steamed his new loco and had the engine inspected by the club’s boiler inspectors. With the ink still drying on the new certificates he took his first run with passengers. Just the cab to be fitted and the tender painted and he is all set for an enjoyable summer on the Tyttenhanger ground level railway. ============================================================ Your editor is very grateful to all those who have contributed to this edition. Danbury Departures Volume No. 26 March 2003 B&M 1455 at Edaville By Bob Boothe Project Coordinator In the process of researching the history of the Boston & Maine 1455 I’ve come across some interesting early photos and postcards which raise questions about what happened to the engine while at Edaville. Our research at the DRM shows that the locomotive which was initially number “100” when built in 1907 was renumbered in 1911 to “1455” and remained with that number while in service with the Boston & Maine. The caption on this postcard with the photo by Hugh Poisson said “The famous 1455 steam train: original road number 100 Built 1907 Donated to Edaville by Patrick McGinnis President of the Boston and Maine”. Note among other things that the headlight is on top of the smoke box which itself along with the smokestack has been painted “graphite/aluminum gray”. One wonders if these “retro-numbering” changes were done before or after arriving at Edaville. Note also the tender has “Boston & Maine” on a single line “Boston & Maine” with no “herald box”. Now here’s a different photo taken by Dick Leonhardt in 1978. The engine has been “updated” to again be “1455” with the headlight back in the center of front access door with the number board on the top of the now black smoke box. The tender now has “Boston & Maine” in a herald box. Any information museum members, friends or others might have to share with us about these or other events in the life of 1455 would be most welcome. -

Sketch: Diagram of Car Unloader Sequence 0204-002.pcx Sketch: Diagram of Automatic Control Equipment on Locomotive 0204-003.pcx In the barren wilderness of western Labrador, only 800 miles south of the Arctic Circle, fully automatic equipment is controlling the operation of four trains running over a five mile stretch of track near Labrador City. This railway, a link between the Smallwood Mines of the Iron Ore Company of Canada and a crushing plant located at the terminal point of the Carol Lake branch of the Quebec, North Shore and Labrador Railway, can handle 55,000 tons of raw ore each day in 18-car trains hauled by 1750 horsepower general purpose diesel road-switchers. It is perhaps significant that the railway that was first to run its trains with only a four-man crew should be the first to eliminate the crew entirely, and with scarcely a word heard from the railway unions who habitually oppose this sort of technological advance.
